Imphal, Dec 12: Chief Minister N Biren Singh of Manipur has issued a fervent appeal to the newly elected Chief Minister of Mizoram Lalduhoma, urging him not to interfere in the internal matters of Manipur.

Instead, he calls for support in restoring peace within the state. This plea comes in response to comments made by the Mizoram Chief Minister regarding the treatment of Manipur people in Moreh, a matter which Singh deems beyond the constitutional rights of his counterpart.

The strong reaction was articulated during the Nupee Lal Numit observance ceremony commemorating brave women who fought against the British Government. The ceremony involved paying floral tributes to the departed women freedom fighters at the Nupee Lal Memorial complex, followed by formal proceedings at the G.P. Women’s College, Central Hall.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, N Biren Singh expressed his dismay at the comments made by the newly elected Mizoram Chief Minister, emphasizing that the state itself should handle the internal affairs of Manipur.

He appealed to Mizoram’s Chief Minister to extend support for restoring peace in Manipur, irrespective of caste and community differences.

Singh also acknowledged the concerns and support other neighbouring states expressed regarding the crisis in Manipur. He emphasized the ongoing political crisis in Myanmar, which has led to the presence of many outsiders in the state. While humanitarian services are being provided to them, measures are also being taken to control the influx of refugees, including biometric checks in strategic locations.

The Chief Minister highlighted the significant role of women in Manipur’s history, announcing two initiatives in their honor. The first initiative involves renaming a road stretch as ‘Nupi Lan Road,’ and the second is the launch of the ‘Chief Minister’s Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme.’

This scheme aims to provide financial assistance of Rs. 6000 per annum to women above 40 years of age with no source of income, not covered under any existing welfare scheme.

Reflecting on the state’s history, Singh recalled the role of Manipuri women in regaining their motherland during the Seven Years Devastation period and acknowledged the contribution of women freedom fighters.

He emphasized the need for unity among the diverse communities residing in the state to address the current law and order situation, seeking collective efforts to restore peace and normalcy.

The event also featured the participation of prominent figures, including lady MLAs, the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, ministers, MLAs, and senior government officials. As part of the program, a Nupee Lal Drama was performed by the Nupee Lal Memorial Association Drama Party, adding a cultural dimension to the commemorative event.
