Imphal, March 29: Political dynamics in Manipur are undergoing a significant transformation as the Lok Sabha elections draw near.
Reliable sources indicate that National People’s Party (NPP) MLAs in Manipur are contemplating merging with the state’s BJP.
Thongam Shanti Singh, the working president and MLA of NPP, has been seen at the BJP Manipur office alongside other BJP MLAs, fueling speculation about the potential merger.
Earlier this month, the NPP, under the leadership of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, announced its support for the Lok Sabha candidates of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland and the Naga People’s Front (NPF) nominee in Manipur.
Additionally, the NPP expressed its backing for NPF candidate Kachui Timothy Zimik in the Outer Manipur seat.

This move signals a significant realignment within the political landscape of Manipur. The NPP, NPF, and NDPP are all allies of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), indicating a broader cooperation among these parties.
According to Sangma, the NDA partners are reciprocating support for each other’s candidates across various northeastern states. This strategic collaboration underscores the growing cohesion within the NDA coalition.
In return for the NPP’s support in Nagaland and Manipur, the BJP has pledged its backing for NPP candidates in Meghalaya and the NPF nominee in the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat. Such mutual support reflects the cooperative spirit within the NDA alliance.
The NPP’s decision to forge alliances and extend support to candidates in different states highlights the complex interplay of regional and national politics in the northeastern region.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the potential merger of NPP MLAs with the BJP in Manipur could have far-reaching implications for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the broader political dynamics in the state.
