Manipur: Women's Ujjwala gas connection 'taken away' for joining Congress rally

Manipur, Dec 5: Suspected BJP workers allegedly took away the cooking gas connection from a beneficiary of the central Ujjwala scheme in Bishnupur district Manipur for taking part in a Congress election rally.

Aheibam Onbi Ashangbi of Nambol Sabal Leikai, who is a below poverty line individual informed reporters that she has lodged a complaint in connection with the incident in Nambol police station.

She had got the LPG connection under the Ujjwala scheme during the three-day Go to Village programme organised at Ngaikhong Khunou under the Oinam assembly constituency Manipur last week.

Many BJP workers came to my house and took away the gas set for joining a Congress rally,” she alleged while asking if the connection given under a government scheme is meant only for BJP workers.

Belonging to the neighbouring Nambol constituency, she asked if it was wrong for a citizen to choose a candidate or a party they wished to support.

Echoing Ashangbi, Nambol Municipal Council member S Chandrakanta asked if the Go to Village programme to provide government welfare schemes to the common people was meant only for BJP workers and not for citizens who support other parties.

He appealed to chief minister N Biren Singh and the state government to ensure such incidents don’t happen in the future.

The MPCC has criticised the BJP for harassing a poor woman. “This truly demonstrates the dictatorial system of the BJP and BJP-led government. This should be condemned by all. Those who snatched away the gas connection issued under a government scheme should be punished according to law,” MPCC spokesperson Kh Debabrata said.
