Shillong, Aug 15: On the occasion of the 78th Independence Day, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated two high-mast national flags in Shillong.
The first, a 100-foot mast, overlooks the Police Bazar, while the second, a 52.5-foot mast, stands in front of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s Administrative Block at Khyndailad.
The ceremony was attended by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma, Commissioner & Secretary Andrew Simons, and other dignitaries, including Cabinet Ministers Marcuise N Marak and A.L. Hek.
The event also featured a special musical tribute by The Aroha Choir, honoring the nation’s and state’s freedom fighters.

Speaker Thomas A Sangma expressed his pride, saying, “Unfurling the first high-mast national flags in the State on Independence Day is a proud moment for Shillong and Meghalaya.” He noted that the sight of the soaring Tricolour would evoke deep patriotic feelings.
Chief Minister Sangma also shared his sentiments on X: “Our pride as Indians lies in our flag, our identity. I am elated to hoist the Tricolour, standing 100 feet high at the Old Meghalaya Assembly in Police Bazar, Shillong.”
