Shillong, Nov 28: The North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMU) has announced a cessation of the supply of Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) petroleum products to Meghalaya starting from November 29. This decision comes in response to the reported harassment faced by oil tanker drivers from Meghalaya Police.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Food, Civil Supply and Consumer Affairs of the Meghalaya government, NEPMU outlined instances of alleged mistreatment by Meghalaya Police personnel towards oil tanker drivers and helpers in Ri Bhoi district since November 24, particularly in the 18th Mile area.

The letter expressed concern over the reported actions of Meghalaya Police, accusing them of forcibly apprehending stranded tankers outside a Dhaba at 22 Mile, registering cases, and detaining loaded tankers without proper justification.

As a consequence, the tanker crews faced difficulties, and the general atmosphere deterred drivers from transporting petroleum products into Meghalaya.

NEPMU’s General Secretary, Ramen Das, emphasized that while the union cooperates with authorities in cases where workers are caught red-handed engaging in malpractices, innocent individuals should not be subjected to harassment. He highlighted instances where police personnel allegedly physically tortured drivers, forcefully obtained statements and photographs, and instilled fear among tanker drivers, jeopardizing their ability to operate in Meghalaya.

As a form of protest and until the matter is satisfactorily resolved, NEPMU announced its decision not to take any load of petroleum products from IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL destined for Meghalaya starting November 29, 2023. The union urged the authorities to address the reported incidents and ensure the safety and fair treatment of oil tanker drivers operating in the region.
