border talks

Aizawl, Sept 22: The Mizoram government has responded positively to the Assam government’s proposal to resume talks regarding the interstate border dispute. The talks, which were last held in November of the previous year, aim to find an amicable solution to the ongoing conflict. A senior official from the Mizoram home department confirmed this development.

According to officials from the Mizoram home department, they communicated with their counterparts in Assam on Wednesday in response to the proposals put forward by the Assam government. The Mizoram government expressed its willingness to engage in official-level talks to discuss the core issues of the dispute.

The Mizoram home department suggested that both states should focus on the specifics of the problems at hand and work towards finding a solution before proceeding to higher-level ministerial negotiations. This approach is aimed at facilitating a more detailed and thorough examination of the issues involved in the border dispute.

In addition, the Mizoram government raised questions about the proposed formation of a regional committee that would include officials from both states. They requested that the Assam government provide more information and clarity regarding the functioning and purpose of such regional committees. Mizoram officials expressed their lack of understanding regarding the potential benefits and roles of these committees.

Earlier this year, the Mizoram government submitted its claim to 62 villages in the disputed border areas with Assam. This claim was accompanied by detailed demographic and geographic information to support Mizoram’s assertion that these areas are within its territory.

The ongoing interstate border disputes between Mizoram and Assam have, on numerous occasions, led to violent incidents along the 164-kilometer border that separates the two neighboring states. Despite these conflicts, there has been a lack of serious efforts to resolve the underlying issues until now. Both governments are now showing a willingness to engage in discussions to find a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
