Imphal, Nov 20: Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Monday reacted strongly to the decision of the Election Commission of India not to change the date of counting of votes for the Mizoram legislative assembly to be held on December 3, which falls on Sunday.

The MPCC press statement slammed the central poll panel for ‘adamantly disregarding the sentiments of the Mizo people by sticking to its guns on its schedule of the date for counting of votes.

“The ECI, while acceding to the demands of the Hindu community in Rajasthan by changing the date of polling for being an auspicious day for the Hindus, refused to concede to the repeated pleas of the civil societies and the churches in Mizoram in regards to change of the date of counting of votes,” the statement said.

The MPCC regrets that a protest has to be organised against the decision of the ECI.

Lalsawta, president of the MPCC on two occasions, had made written appeals to the ECI on October 9 and November 13 asking the latter to change the date of the counting date, but to no avail, the statement said.

He (Lalsawta) suggested that a change of counting date from December to December 4 of 5 will not be able to change the results as polling will have been completed in all the states that go to polls.

It is the wish of the Congress party that the date of counting of votes should be changed, the statement said.
