Imphal, Jan 04: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a report detailing the killing of 13 individuals in Manipur last month amidst ethnic violence.

The NHRC issued a notice to the Manipur state government, emphasizing its responsibility to safeguard citizens in the region.

The incident occurred on December 4 when village defense volunteers reportedly killed 13 men upon entering a Kuki area.

This event marked the highest single-day toll in the ongoing clashes between the Meiteis and Kukis, a conflict that has disrupted Manipur since May 3, resulting in approximately 200 fatalities and displacing over 50,000 people.

The NHRC’s notice described the incident as “alarming and disturbing,” suggesting a potential lapse on the part of law enforcement agencies and security forces responsible for maintaining peace and order.

The commission called on the state police to submit a report detailing the status of the First Information Report (FIR) and outlining the measures taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

In response, Manipur Police have reportedly filed a reply and provided necessary details, although specific information on their response remains undisclosed.

The NHRC’s intervention underscores the significance of addressing human rights concerns and maintaining law and order in the region to prevent further violence and protect the well-being of citizens.
