Rail Line to Mizoram Expected to Be Completed by July 2025: Officials

Aizawl, July 20: The Bairabi-Sairang railway line, set to connect Mizoram to the national railway network, is expected to be commissioned by July next year, officials announced.

Approximately 93 per cent of the 51.38-km line is already complete, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials reported to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati during a project review meeting.

The line includes four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. The section up to Hortoki will be commissioned in the next few days, and services to Mualkhang station are expected to start in the coming months.

The entire line, reaching Sairang near Aizawl, is projected to be operational by July next year, promising to enhance Mizoram’s economy and tourism industry.

Governor Kambhampati noted that the railway project will reduce travel time and transportation costs between Mizoram and Assam.

The project, sanctioned in 2008-09, is estimated to cost Rs 8,213.72 crore. The line features 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and 32 tunnels, with construction work beginning in 2015.

Assam’s ‘Moidams’ Near UNESCO World Heritage Status

Guwahati, July 20: The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has recommended Assam’s ‘Moidams’ for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The ‘Moidams’, mound-burial sites from the Ahom dynasty, will be reviewed at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi from July 21-31.

Janhwij Sharma of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) confirmed that ‘Moidams’ meet the criteria for a UNESCO heritage tag. If accepted, it will be the first cultural property from Northeast India to receive this recognition.

These unique burial mounds, used by the Tai-Ahom dynasty, are characterized by pyramid-like structures. The nomination was submitted for the 2023-24 cycle.

Vishal V Sharma, chairperson of the World Heritage Committee, highlighted the significance of this potential recognition.

The session in Delhi will also feature various cultural events and exhibitions, curated by the Ministry of Tourism and other ministries. The Maharashtra government has planned models of forts related to Chhatrapati Shivaji. The event will see participation from over 2,000 delegates from more than 150 countries.

The World Heritage Young Professionals Forum and the World Heritage Site Managers’ Forum will also be held, focusing on heritage conservation and management.

According to the UNESCO website, ‘Moidams’ are vaulted chambers (chow-chali), often double-storied, with an arched passage for entry. Atop the hemispherical mud mounds, layers of bricks and earth are laid.

The base is reinforced by a polygonal toe wall and an arched gateway on the west.

“Eventually, the mound would be covered by a layer of vegetation, reminiscent of a group of hillocks, transforming the area into an undulating landscape,” the description of ‘moidams’ added.

Excavations show each vaulted chamber has a centrally raised platform where the body was laid.

Several objects used by the deceased during life, such as royal insignia, wooden, ivory, or iron objects, gold pendants, ceramic ware, weapons, clothes, and even human beings (only from the Luk-kha-khun clan), were buried with their king.

Critical services such as airlines, health systems, banks, telecommunications, and emergency services were affected.

The outage is suspected to be linked to a failure of CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity platform that protects Microsoft Windows systems.

In Australia, banks, telecommunications, media outlets, and airlines were impacted, with the National Cyber Security Coordinator noting a “large-scale technical outage affecting multiple companies and services.”

Emergency 911 services in many US states were down, along with non-emergency call centers. In the UK, Sky News faced broadcast interruptions, and the Associated Press experienced intermittent disruptions affecting news delivery.

In England, a health booking system for doctors went offline, and the London Stock Exchange also faced service issues. Several brokerage firms in India, including Nuvama, Edelweiss, and Motilal Oswal, reported technical outages impacting trading operations.

Agartala, July 19: Twenty-seven mortar shells, believed to be from the 1971 India-Pakistan war, were unearthed during the excavation of a fish pond in Rangutia village, near the Bangladesh border in Tripura West district, on Thursday.

Officer Anthony Jamatia from the Bamuthia outpost reported that Dulal Nama discovered the shells on his land in the Mohanpur sub-division.

The shells appeared fused, with initial estimates suggesting they had been buried for nearly 53 years. No information about the origin or manufacturer was found on the shells.

A significant police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) presence was dispatched to manage the excavation.

Senior villagers recalled that Mukti Bahini fighters, who operated in the area during the 1971 war, might have buried the shells but did not retrieve them after the war ended.

Tripura has maintained a strong relationship with Bangladesh since its independence in 1971.

The state played a pivotal role in the Bangladesh Liberation War, providing refuge to 1.6 million East Pakistani refugees, surpassing its population of 1.5 million at the time.

Tripura shares an 856 km international border with Bangladesh, including land and riverine boundaries.

Dibrugarh, July 19: Rescue operations at the site near Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, where eight coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed, have been completed. A special train carrying 600 passengers has departed for Assam.

The derailment, which occurred between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations on Thursday, resulted in the deaths of at least four passengers and injuries to over 30 others.

Immediately after the derailment, ambulances and medical teams were dispatched to the scene, despite bad weather temporarily hindering rescue efforts.

The train driver reported hearing a “sound of a blast” before the derailment, according to an official.

The deceased have been identified as Saroj Kumar Singh (31) from Araria, Bihar, and Rahul (38) from Chandigarh, with two victims remaining unidentified.

Itanagar, July 18: The budget session of the Arunachal Pradesh assembly is set to begin on Friday, with the annual financial statement for the 2024-25 fiscal to be presented on July 24, an official announced.

The session will conclude on July 26.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who also holds the Finance and Planning portfolio, will present the budget on July 24 during the eight-day session, according to Assembly Secretary Kago Habung.

This will be the first budget of the Pema Khandu government after its return to power for the third term.

The session will commence with a motion of thanks to the governor’s address. Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K T Parnaik addressed the members of the House during the first session of the Eight Legislative Assembly on June 14 and 15.

Three significant government bills – ‘The Arunachal Pradesh Amending Bill, 2024’, ‘The Arunachal Pradesh Public Examination (Measures to Prevent Unfair Means in Recruitment) Bill, 2024’, and ‘The Balipara/Tirap/Sadiya Frontier Tract Jhum Land Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2024’ – will be tabled on the opening day, Habung added.

Arunachal Assembly Speaker Tesam Pongte chaired a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee on Wednesday to plan the agenda for the budget session.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona, Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor, and MLAs from various parties, including Congress, NCP, NPP, and the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA), attended the meeting.

All political parties in the state, except Congress, which is represented by a single MLA, extended unconditional support to the BJP government.

The ruling BJP has 46 MLAs in the 60-member House, while the NPP has five legislators, NCP three, and PPA two.

Guwahati, July 18: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement as water levels receded in many areas, although more than 350,000 people across 11 districts remained affected, according to an official update on Thursday.

Several major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, continued to flow above the danger mark at multiple locations across the state.

Approximately 355,400 individuals were still grappling with the aftermath of the floods in districts such as Cachar, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Sivasgar.

Dhubri recorded the highest impact with nearly 80,000 affected people, followed by Nagaon with 77,500 and Cachar with 72,000 residents facing challenges due to the flooding.

Earlier this week, the affected people exceeded 404,000 across 12 districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported a death toll of 113 this year due to floods, lightning, and storms.

Approximately 13,000 people sought refuge in 66 relief camps, with another 19 relief distribution centers supporting over 11,000 individuals.

The floods submerged 16,673 hectares of cropland and affected more than 163,800 domestic animals and poultry.

In addition to the Brahmaputra, rivers like Disang at Nanglamuraghat and Rukni at Dholai continued to flow above danger levels, exacerbating the situation.

Damage to dams, houses, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure has been reported from various districts, underscoring the widespread impact of the floods.

A joint team comprising state police, Assam Rifles personnel, and government officials searched Govajang village, where they recorded biometric data for these individuals.

Singh announced on Facebook that the operation, led by officials including Md. Ejaj from Tengnoupal and SDO Moreh, aims to re-verify and identify residents in the area.
