By-election Results: INDIA Secures 6 Seats, Leads in 4; NDA Wins 1, Ahead in Another

New Delhi, July 13: INDIA bloc, supported by various opposition parties, secured victories in six assembly seats and led in four others, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to clinch only one seat during the bypolls held across 13 constituencies in seven states on Saturday, July 13.

The Congress, having won 99 seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections, emerged victorious in two seats in Uttarakhand and successfully secured the Dehra assembly seat in Himachal Pradesh, where Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, contested.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), an ally of the INDIA bloc, celebrated a decisive win in Punjab’s Jalandhar West with candidate Mohinder Bhagat defeating BJP’s Sheetal Angural by a substantial margin of over 37,000 votes.

According to data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Trinamool Congress, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claimed victory in three assembly seats including Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin, and led in Maniktala.

In Tamil Nadu, DMK leader Anniyur Siva maintained a lead in the Vikravandi assembly constituency.

In Himachal Pradesh, Congress candidates Kamlesh Thakur and Hardeep Singh Bawa were leading in Dehra and Nalagarh respectively, while BJP’s Ashish Sharma held the lead in Hamirpur.

Elsewhere, independent candidate Shankar Singh led in Bihar’s Rupauli seat, with Janata Dal (United) candidate Kaladhar Mandal as the closest competitor. Former Janata Dal (United) member Bima Bharti, who switched to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) earlier this year, faced defeat in her bid for the Purnia parliamentary seat during the Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP secured the Hamirpur seat in Himachal Pradesh and maintained a lead in Madhya Pradesh’s Amarwara constituency.

The bypolls serve as a crucial litmus test for the BJP, which fell short of a clear majority with 240 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, necessitating alliances within the NDA coalition to form a government. This contrasts with its independent victories of 303 and 282 seats in the 2019 and 2014 elections respectively.

With the support of key allies such as N Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), which secured 16 and 12 seats in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar respectively, the NDA coalition crossed the halfway mark needed for governance.

The star-studded guest list extended to Bollywood’s top tier with Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and others in attendance, along with southern stars Rajinikanth, Ram Charan, and Mahesh Babu.

The wedding festivities began with a puja at the Ambani residence, Antilia, followed by pre-wedding rituals including the ‘mameru,’ sangeet, haldi, and mehendi ceremonies.

Earlier celebrations included a cruise party from Italy to France and a grand gala in Jamnagar attended by 1,000 guests.

The notification stated that the Terms of Reference (ToR) for these regional committees will remain consistent with those outlined in the original notification from June 1, 2022.

This continuity ensures that the committees’ work will adhere to established guidelines and objectives as they seek to find a lasting solution to the border conflict.

The reconstitution affects six districts in Arunachal Pradesh where the border dispute with Assam remains unresolved due to disagreements on the demarcation of villages along the inter-state boundary.

The border dispute has been a source of tension between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, with residents on both sides of the boundary often contesting the demarcation of their villages.

New Delhi, July 13: The opposition INDIA bloc is giving a tough fight to the BJP as votes are being counted for assembly bypolls in 13 seats across seven states on Saturday.

These bypolls are a critical test for the BJP, which recently failed to secure a majority in the Lok Sabha elections.

Vote counting began at 8 am in key constituencies across West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Bihar.

The fiercely contested bypolls took place on July 10 and are the first since the Lok Sabha election, with the ruling BJP and the opposition INDIA bloc, which includes Congress, Trinamool Congress, DMK, and Aam Aadmi Party, vying for the seats.

Here are the latest developments:

  • West Bengal: Trinamool Congress’s Madhupurna Thakur leads by 12,444 votes in Bagda. Trinamool candidates are also ahead in Ranaghat, Maniktala, and Raiganj.
  • Uttarakhand: Congress candidate Qazi Nizamuddin leads in Manglaur with 12,540 votes, followed by BSP’s Ubedur Rehman. The BJP’s Kartar Singh Bhadana is third. In Badrinath, Congress’s Lakhpat Singh Butola is leading against BJP’s Rajendra Bhandari.
  • Punjab: In Jalandhar West, AAP’s Mohinder Bhagat has a commanding lead of 42,007 votes. Congress’s Surinder Kaur and BJP’s Sheetal Angural are trailing.
  • Tamil Nadu: DMK’s Anniyur Siva leads in Vikravandi against C Anbumani and Naam Tamilar Katchi’s K Abinaya.
  • Bihar: JD(U)’s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal leads by 2,433 votes in Rupauli. RJD’s Bima Bharti is third.
  • Madhya Pradesh: In Amarwara, BJP’s Kamlesh Pratap Shah leads by 4,160 votes over Congress’s Dheeran Shah Invati.
  • Himachal Pradesh: Congress candidates are leading in all three seats. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur leads in Dehra, Pushpinder Verma in Hamirpur, and Hardeep Singh Bawa in Nalagarh.

Agartala, July 13: Four people were arrested following the death of a young boy who succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at GB Pant Hospital in Agartala. The boy’s death has sparked massive protests in the Ganda Twisa sub-division of Tripura’s Dhalai District.

The incident began on July 7 after a small altercation at a fair escalated into a scuffle, resulting in injuries to Parameswar Reang. Reang died on Friday morning while receiving treatment.

“We have already arrested four boys, all of whom are now in judicial custody,” Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Waheed said.

The unrest began when Reang’s body was brought back to Gandacherra, leading to heightened tensions. Villagers demanded the arrest of those responsible for the violence against Reang.

“They held a protest and set some small establishments on fire. Some of the shops were gutted in the fire. We have deployed police and paramilitary forces everywhere. We are taking control of the situation. We don’t want it to escalate. The situation is now totally under control,” said Waheed.

To maintain law and order, the district administration has deployed sufficient forces on the ground and imposed Section 144, prohibiting the assembly of more than four people. Internet connection has been suspended in Gandacherra for the next 24 hours.

Waheed highlighted the role of social media in exacerbating tensions: “Some messages were sent on social media which instigated the people. However, no other incidents have taken place. Sensing that the law and order situation might deteriorate, we declared Section 144 in the Ganda Twisa sub-division. Although some protests occurred at night, everything is now normal.”

New Delhi, July 12: The BJP-led central government has officially declared June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ to commemorate those who suffered during the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on X, “On June 25, 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, showing her dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of Indian democracy by imposing an emergency in the country. Lakhs of people were jailed without any reason and the voice of the media was suppressed.”

He added, “The Government of India has decided to celebrate June 25 every year as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’. This day will remind us of the immense contribution of all those people who suffered the inhuman pain of the Emergency of 1975.”

Indira Gandhi’s government declared a state of emergency on June 25, 1975, and democracy was restored nearly two years later on March 21, 1977. June 25, 2024, marked 50 years since the Emergency.

On June 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the Emergency as a “black spot” in India’s democracy during the first session of the new Lok Sabha.

He stated, “The new generation of India will never forget that the Constitution of India was completely rejected, every part of the Constitution was torn to pieces, the country was turned into a prison, democracy was completely suppressed. While protecting our Constitution and democratic traditions, the countrymen will resolve that no one will dare to do such a thing in India again. We will take a resolution of a vibrant democracy and fulfil the dreams of the common people as per the directions of the Constitution of India.”

Agartala, July 12: The North East Gas Grid (NEGG) project in Tripura, aimed at synchronizing gas supply across Northeast India, is set to be completed by March 2025, according to state officials.

Managed by Indradhanus Gas Grid Ltd (IGGL), a joint venture involving GAIL, IOCL, OIL, NRL, and ONGC, the project involves laying a 253-kilometre gas pipeline across seven districts of Tripura.

Currently, 105 kilometres of the pipeline have been completed, with the remainder expected to be finished by March 2025, pending the final stages of land acquisition, pipeline welding, and laying.

Delays in compensation for land acquisition have been resolved, with district magistrates now processing payments. The NEGG aims to enhance gas supply reliability for industrial and power generation needs.

The incident has sparked protests in Doomdooma, where locals gathered to denounce the removal of the 5.5-tall statue of the revered leader.

Author Tushar Gandhi condemned the action, stating, “Not surprising that the BJP Government in Assam decided to replace Bapu’s statue with a clock tower in Tinsukia.”

Protesters are demanding a thorough investigation and the immediate restoration of the statue.

Doomdooma BJP MLA assured on July 11 that a new, taller statue of 6.5 feet would be erected at the original site within six months, alongside the clock tower.

Kaziranga, July 12: Kaziranga National Park, known for its biodiversity and protection of one-horned rhinoceroses, faces its worst flood in a decade.

The park, spanning 1,090 square kilometers in Assam, saw water levels peak at 87.47 meters on June 1 at Nimatighat in the Jorhat district, surpassing the previous record set in 2017.

According to KNP director Sonali Ghosh, the floods have claimed 174 animal lives, including 10 rhinos. The hog deer were the most affected, with 153 deaths mainly due to drowning, compounded by two fatalities from vehicle collisions on nearby highways.

“In 2017, the park witnessed its most devastating flood, with 291 animal casualties, including 24 rhinos,” Ghosh noted. This year, forest personnel rescued 135 animals under challenging conditions.

“While wildlife loss is concerning, floods are vital for the park’s ecosystem and wildlife cycle,” said Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, CEO of Aranyak, a biodiversity conservation group. “Annual floods energize the ecosystem and are crucial for sustaining wildlife, including rhinos along the Brahmaputra river.”

Despite Kaziranga’s situation, Assam’s overall flood scenario is improving.

According to the latest update from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 13.99 lakh people in 2,545 villages across 26 districts are affected, with 83 flood-related deaths reported this year.

Gangtok, July 12: In a move to enhance work-life balance for government employees, the Government of Sikkim has declared the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month as official holidays.

This new policy was announced in a circular issued today by the Department of Personnel.

Signed by the Secretary to the Government of Sikkim, the circular specifies that government offices will now operate from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM on working days.

This change addresses issues of employees arriving late and leaving early, which have disrupted government operations and inconvenienced the public.

The circular noted, “Lately, it is seen that many government employees are reporting for duty very late in the morning and leaving office much before the scheduled time in the evening. This hampers the implementation of development-oriented policies and programs of the Government.”

To ensure punctuality, heads of departments are instructed to conduct surprise checks on attendance and perform regular inspections.

Employees arriving after 10:30 AM or leaving before 4:30 PM without valid reasons will have half a day of casual leave deducted.

Absence without proper leave recorded will result in a full day’s casual leave deduction.

Furthermore, the circular discourages submitting leave applications via SMS or WhatsApp, insisting on proper paper applications instead.
