Imphal, July 04: At least two people have drowned in the Senapati River in Manipur due to severe flooding, officials reported. In response to the crisis, the state government announced that schools would remain closed until Thursday, July 4.

A senior official stated that the Imphal River breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West, while the Kongba River overflowed at Kongba Irong and parts of Keirao in Imphal East. These breaches have forced the evacuation of over 2,000 residents.

The Imphal River’s overflow has submerged areas in the Singjamei and Langthabal assembly constituencies in Imphal West.

Meanwhile, the Iril River has flooded many localities in the Kshetrigao and Wangkhei assembly constituencies in Imphal East.

Ongoing rescue operations have been crucial in mitigating the impact of the flooding, which has displaced numerous residents and disrupted daily life.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Red Cross Society, Loktak Development Authority, Assam Rifles, and state police have been conducting relief and rescue operations for the past two days.

Officials reported that the state government has established a 24×7 control room to enhance coordination in rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts, addressing the needs of those affected by the relentless rains, floods, and landslides.

Itanagar, July 04: Several towns near the Indo-China border in Arunachal Pradesh, including Hawaii, Walong, and Kibitho, have been completely isolated due to severe infrastructural damage caused by erosion and landslides.

Connectivity issues are prevalent, with Hawaii and Walong cut off from main routes due to erosion in the Samdul area.

Clearing these blockages is anticipated to take about a week. The route from Hayuliang to Hawaii remains partially open, although travelers face challenges due to minor landslides.

In contrast, the Tezu to Hayuliang route has sustained substantial damage, with approximately 250 meters of road washed away at Mompani, forcing commuters to trek through rough terrain for one and a half hours to bypass the blockage.

Efforts to restore connectivity are hindered by disputes over land compensation with local landowners.

Additionally, the BIPL company’s project to widen the double lane from Tidding to Hayuliang is ongoing. Aitel network services are disrupted due to damage to the OFC cable at multiple points, resulting in a four-day internet blackout in Hawaii.

The Honorable Minister Smt. Dasanglu Pul has been stranded in Anjaw for a week due to these disruptions.

The BRO road from Parashuram Kund to Tidding has suffered extensive damage, including to RCC bridges and severe erosion, leading to traffic diversion through the longer Udayak Road.

A meeting convened by the District Commissioner is scheduled for July 5th in Hawaii, where Minister and local MLA Dasanglu Pul is expected to address these pressing issues.

Residents are urging daily helicopter services to Hayuliang and Hawaii until road conditions improve. The power supply in the district is severely affected by the collapse of poles along the 33KV line from Tezu to Hayuliang.

Moreover, essential supplies such as ration, fuel, gas cylinders, and medicines are dwindling, exacerbating the crisis. Restoration efforts are estimated to take at least a month due to the extensive damage and the complex logistical challenges involved.

Gandhi criticized the government in Parliament, alleging that Agniveers were being treated as disposable labor, raising concerns about support for those who sacrifice their lives in service.

In response, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh refuted the accusations, affirming that families of deceased Agniveers receive a compensation package of Rs 1 crore.

The Army honored Kumar’s sacrifice with full military honors and confirmed Rs 98.39 lakhs disbursed to his family.

Pending police verifications are expected to finalize additional Rs 67 lakhs in ex-gratia payments and benefits, bringing the total compensation to approximately Rs 1.65 crore once processed.

Last week, the 96-year-old leader was hospitalized at AIIMS due to age-related health concerns.

At AIIMS, he underwent examination by specialists from various fields, including urology and geriatric medicine, and underwent a minor procedure before being discharged on June 27.

Earlier this year, LK Advani was honored with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other senior leaders at his residence, acknowledging his significant political career.

New Delhi, July 04: More than 7 per cent of daily deaths in 10 major Indian cities are linked to air pollution caused by PM2.5 concentrations exceeding the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) safe exposure limits, according to a study published in The Lancet Planetary Health journal.

The study analyzed data from cities including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Shimla, and Varanasi.

It revealed that PM2.5 levels, tiny pollutants that can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, exceeded the WHO’s safe limit of 15 micrograms per cubic meter on 99.8 percent of the days.

Delhi has the highest fraction of daily and yearly deaths attributable to PM2.5 air pollution, comprising particles 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, the study said.

These harmful particles primarily stem from vehicular and industrial emissions.

Annually, the national capital records around 12,000 deaths linked to air pollution, amounting to a staggering 11.5 percent of its total deaths.

Researchers found that daily exposure to PM2.5 pollution in Indian cities is linked with a higher risk of death, with locally created pollution likely causing these fatalities.

An alarming finding indicated that a 10 microgram per cubic meter increase in PM2.5 concentration, measured over two days, correlates with a 1.4 percent rise in daily mortality.

This risk factor doubles to 2.7 percent when observations are restricted to levels below the Indian air quality standards, which are notably less stringent than WHO guidelines.

The WHO recommends a safe exposure limit of 15 micrograms per cubic meter over 24 hours, while the Indian standard allows for 60 micrograms per cubic meter.

City-specific data revealed a 0.31 percent rise in daily mortality per 10 microgram per cubic meter increase in PM2.5 levels in Delhi, compared to a 3.06 percent rise in Bengaluru.

The study’s causality models indicated a stronger link between daily exposure to PM2.5 and locally produced pollutants, suggesting that local pollution significantly contributes to these deaths.

The study also highlighted that the causal effects were particularly strong in cities with lower overall air pollution levels, such as Bengaluru, Chennai, and Shimla.

This research is the first multi-city time series analysis of short-term exposure to PM2.5 and daily mortality in India.

It analyzed around 36 lakh daily deaths across ten Indian cities from 2008 to 2019. The study involved an international team, including researchers from Varanasi’s Banaras Hindu University and the Centre for Chronic Disease Control, New Delhi.

Joel Schwartz from Harvard University, a co-author of the study, emphasized that lowering and enforcing stricter air quality limits “will save tens of thousands of lives per year.” He stressed that effective methods for controlling pollution are already in use in other parts of the world and urgently need to be implemented in India.

The WHO asserts that almost everyone on Earth is exposed to higher levels of air pollution than recommended, posing severe health risks.

Prolonged exposure to PM2.5 particles can trigger strokes, heart disease, lung cancer, and various other respiratory ailments.

A large group of enthusiastic fans greeted the team at the airport. Captain Rohit Sharma emerged with the trophy, and Virat Kohli received a rousing reception, waving to the fans in appreciation of their support.

Notably, the Men in Blue were stranded in Barbados for four days due to Hurricane Beryl, which had shut down the airport. Once the weather improved, a special Air India chartered flight was dispatched to bring the World Champions back home.

After an 18-hour journey, the team finally landed in India, where fans had been waiting in long queues since late the previous night to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars. Special arrangements were made to welcome the team at both the airport and their hotel.

Guwahati, July 04: Assam is grappling with a severe flood crisis that has claimed 46 lives, with eight deaths reported in the past 24 hours alone.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) states that the flood situation remains dire, impacting over 16.25 lakh people across 29 districts during the second wave of floods.

Dhubri is the worst-hit district, with 2,23,210 people affected, followed by Darrang with 1,83,738 people, and Lakhimpur with 1,66,063 affected individuals.

The floodwaters have submerged 2,800 villages under 105 revenue circles, forcing approximately 3.86 lakh people to seek shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centers.

The deluge has also had a devastating impact on livestock, affecting 11,20,165 animals. Rescue operations, involving the NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, and other agencies, are in full swing, with 8,377 people rescued in the last 24 hours.

Infrastructure across the state has suffered extensive damage, with 100 roads, 14 bridges, and 11 embankments breached.

Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, are flowing above the danger mark in several areas, worsening the situation for residents in districts such as Dhubri, Tezpur, Guwahati, and Goalpara.

Uttar Dinajpur, July 03: Another tragic incident in West Bengal has resulted in the death of a woman by suicide, following allegations of being publicly flogged over an alleged extramarital affair.

This comes amidst continuing public outcry over the recent public flogging of a couple accused of having an illicit relationship in Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur district, as reported by police on Tuesday.

The latest incident occurred in Jalpaiguri district, where authorities have taken four individuals into custody, including two women, in connection with the case.

According to a report, the woman was alleged to have had an extramarital affair with a young man and had been missing from her home for ten days. During her absence, her husband filed a missing person complaint at the New Jalpaiguri police station.

Upon her return on Monday, local women publicly berated and physically assaulted her, questioning her character. Her husband also faced assault when he attempted to intervene.

Overwhelmed by the humiliation, the woman consumed pesticides and tragically took her own life late Monday night, according to the complaint.

The woman’s husband reported that the village panchayat head and TMC leader Malati Roy, along with her husband Shankar Roy, summoned his wife to a meeting.

Allegedly, supporters of the Roys attacked both him and his wife upon their arrival. However, Malati and Shankar Roy have denied these accusations, stating they did not conduct any kind of informal court proceedings.

Shankar Roy clarified that the couple had intended to lodge a police complaint but opted to attend the panchayat meeting instead.

He mentioned that the woman had previously eloped with another man, which may have triggered their neighbors to assault her.

He asserted that they were not present during the altercation and only arrived when the meeting was already in progress. He added that the woman excused herself to use the restroom, and it was later discovered that she had ingested acid.

The public outcry over the ‘flogging’ incident in Chopra has intensified following a viral video showing Tajmul, also known as ‘JCB,’ purportedly a TMC leader from the area, assaulting a couple with a bamboo stick. The disturbing incident, captured on Friday, has sparked widespread outrage.

Tajmul was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon and now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault intending to outrage the modesty of a woman, and causing grievous bodily harm.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has raised concerns with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also serves as the state’s Home Minister, regarding her failure to provide a requested report on the Chopra flogging incident by Monday.

Bose emphasized, “It is my constitutional responsibility, and it is also the responsibility of the CM, that if I request a report on any matter, it should be submitted on time.”

Explaining his absence from Chopra, Bose stated, “I was approached by the victims from Chopra to meet them privately at Raj Bhavan, and I honored their request.”

He further clarified that the victims could meet him at Raj Bhavan or any other place of their choosing.

These individuals had reached out to the Raj Bhavan’s ‘Peace Room’ to express their concerns and seek justice.

The Fed’s next rate action is likely to be a rate cut, and the RBI is also expected to follow suit with a rate cut in the next policy meeting.”
