Itanagar, July 06: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has unveiled a bold initiative to advance sports in the state by launching “Mission Olympic 2028” and “Mission Olympic 2032” under the government’s ambitious 100-day action plan.

These programs are designed to identify and nurture talented athletes from Arunachal Pradesh to represent India at the Olympics.

Khandu emphasized that detailed plans for these missions would be finalized and executed within the first hundred days of his administration.

The primary objective is to discover and groom athletes capable of competing internationally, elevating Arunachal Pradesh’s stature in the global sports arena.

“We aim to maximize the participation of athletes from Arunachal Pradesh in the Olympics, showcasing our talent and proudly representing our nation,” stated Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

Imphal, July 06: A recent survey conducted by the Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC) indicates a substantial decrease in illegal poppy cultivation across Manipur over the past four years.

Utilizing advanced mapping and estimation techniques, the study underscores the effectiveness of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s “War on Drugs” initiative launched in 2021.

From September 2023 to January 2024, the survey mapped poppy cultivation areas in nine hill districts: Chandel, Churachandpur, Kamjong, Kangpokpi, Noney, Senapati, Tamenglong, Tengnoupal, and Ukhrul.

The findings reveal a reduction in poppy cultivation from 16,632.29 acres in the 2022-2023 period to 11,288.07 acres in 2023-2024, marking a significant 32.13% decrease from the previous year.

In 2021-2022, the initial MARSAC report documented 28,598.91 acres under poppy cultivation across eight districts, with Kangpokpi reporting the highest area at 9,517.90 acres. By 2022-2023, this number had decreased by 40.94% to 16,890.37 acres.

District-wise data shows notable declines, such as in Churachandpur, where poppy cultivation dropped from 6,688.61 acres to 4,062.04 acres in the same period. Similarly, Kangpokpi saw a decrease from 9,517.90 acres to 5,407.47 acres.

Tamenglong reported approximately 96.06 acres of poppy cultivation in 2022-2023, while Noney, previously poppy-free in 2021-2022, recorded 132.36 acres in the following year.

Pherzawl remains the sole poppy-free hill district in Manipur.

Supported by an official report from the Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB), MARSAC’s findings indicate significant progress in eliminating poppy cultivation from 2017 to 2024.

NAB reports the destruction of 19,135.50 acres of poppy plantations during this period, with Kangpokpi and Churachandpur witnessing the highest rates of destruction at 4,454.4 acres and 2,317.8 acres, respectively.

Itanagar, July 06: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta conducted an inspection at National Highway 415 (NH-415) amid continuous rainfall and the threat of further landslides and mudslides. In response, manpower and machinery were immediately deployed.

The Highway Department has been instructed to have personnel and equipment on standby at all times. During her visit to Karsingsa Block, where a massive landslide had occurred, Mehta issued a traffic advisory for road closure and redirected traffic through an alternative route via Gumto.

Mehta also inspected the blocked section of 6 Kilo, where debris had accumulated, ensuring assistance in clearing it. The department was directed to immediately clear blockades in the Lekhi area.

The Deputy Commissioner visited the state highway through Ganga Lake to Batt village, where multiple landslides had occurred. The Public Works Department (PWD) is actively clearing debris and blockades, with traffic moving through the route.

Mehta has directed the PWD to continue monitoring and maintaining clearance operations, keeping machinery stationed on-site.

An alternate water supply pipeline installation to Itanagar township is ongoing through the same route, along with road maintenance. The DC also inspected the alternate PMGSY road through Ganga Batt, assessed its condition, and directed necessary maintenance.

Emphasizing that all stakeholders are diligently performing their duties, Mehta noted that the electrical department is on the ground, carrying out restoration work.

She requested all residents to exercise caution while traveling through these roads and to avoid unnecessary travel.

Guwahati, July 05: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has strongly criticized the ongoing violations of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, in Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary and Charduar Reserve Forest, Sonitpur District, Assam.

Despite the case being registered in September 2023, the issues remain unresolved, highlighting persistent illegal constructions.

The NGT rebuked the affidavit submitted by Rajpal Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF), calling it “inadequate and flawed.” Singh has been instructed to submit a revised affidavit within a week.

Illegal constructions, authorized years ago by the Assam Forest Department, continue to exist.

The NGT found extensive environmental damage, including felled trees and disrupted wildlife habitats, to accommodate structures such as sluice gates by the Irrigation Department, ring wells by the Public Health Engineering Department, illegal schools, private tea gardens, and unauthorized roads.

Environmental activist Dilip Nath emphasized the presence of these illegal structures in Sonitpur, an area notorious for human-elephant conflicts. He raised questions about the legality of these constructions within protected wildlife sanctuaries.

The NGT has directed the state government to identify and hold accountable the officials responsible for permitting these violations.

The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change has also been tasked with investigating.

The tribunal also criticized Special Chief Secretary MK Yadava, accusing him of illegally diverting 44 hectares and 28 hectares of reserved forest land in Assam, which allegedly damaged Assam’s reputation.

Who is Keir Starmer?

UK Labour leader Keir Starmer, a former human rights lawyer and public prosecutor, will need to apply his relentless work ethic and methodical mind to fixing the country.

If the exit polls are accurate, 61-year-old Starmer will become the oldest person to assume the role of British Prime Minister in nearly half a century, just nine years after being first elected to parliament.

In 2003, he moved towards the establishment by taking a job ensuring that police in Northern Ireland complied with human rights legislation. Five years later, he was appointed director of public prosecutions (DPP) for England and Wales under Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
