Shillong, July 08: The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) has announced its upcoming annual karate championship for school and college students.

Scheduled from August 22-24, the event will be held at the Multipurpose Indoor Hall of the Sports Authority of India’s Shillong Training Centre on the NEHU campus.

This year marks the 30th Inter School and 12th Inter College Karate Tournament, organized by AMKA in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.

Hundreds of karate enthusiasts from various educational institutions are expected to participate in the three-day competition.

Competitors will demonstrate their prowess in kumite (sparring) and kata (form) events.

The tournament serves as a platform for nurturing talent, with many past participants advancing to represent Meghalaya and India in national and international arenas.

Silchar, July 08: Ahead of his visit to Manipur, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi arrived in Silchar, Assam.

He is expected to meet with flood-affected people in Assam on Monday before heading to violence-hit Manipur, a state party spokesperson said.

This visit marks his first trip to the Northeast since becoming the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Assam Visit Amid Flood Crisis

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Assam comes as the state battles severe floods due to torrential rainfall, causing landslides and overflowing rivers.

Approximately 22.70 lakh people across 28 districts have been affected by the deluge. Gandhi is slated to arrive at the Kumbhigram airport in Silchar, Cachar district, in the morning.

He is expected to visit a flood relief camp in Lakhipur to interact with those who have taken refuge there, according to the spokesperson.

The camp visit is along the route Gandhi will take to Manipur’s Jiribam district.

Manipur Tour

After visiting the relief camp, Gandhi will return to Silchar airport in Assam from Jiribam and then fly to Imphal for the next leg of his Manipur tour. Since May 3 last year, Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, resulting in over 200 deaths so far.

Flood Impact in Assam

Meanwhile, in Assam, a total of 78 people have died in this year’s floods, landslides, and storms. The flood-affected districts include Kamrup, Nagaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Dibrugarh, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Nalbari, Charaideo, Biswanath, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Darrang, Sivasagar, Chirang, and Tinsukia.

Nine rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are flowing above the danger mark in many places.

Government Response

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited flood relief camps in Kamrup district to assess the impact of the ongoing floods and oversee the distribution of relief to the affected people.

The water level of the Brahmaputra is above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri, though it is receding in Guwahati.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit aims to bring national attention to the plight of flood-affected people in Assam while also addressing the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur.

Guwahati, July 08: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of the central government’s unwavering support as the state faces severe flooding due to heavy rains.

During their conversation, Shah emphasized that both the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are operating on a war footing to provide relief and rescue efforts.

“In light of the heavy rains, Assam is experiencing a flood-like situation. I spoke with Assam CM Shri @himantabiswaJi about the current conditions. The NDRF and the SDRF are working tirelessly to provide relief and rescue victims. PM Shri @narendramodiJi stands firmly with the people of Assam, committed to offering all possible assistance during these challenging times,” Shah stated in a post on ‘X’.

The ongoing floods over the past month have wreaked havoc across Assam, leading to loss of life, extensive infrastructure damage, road closures, crop destruction, and loss of livestock. The deluge has rendered hundreds homeless and displaced, affecting over 2.42 million people across 30 districts.

Dhubri district is among the hardest hit, with 775,721 people affected. Agricultural lands have suffered severely, with 63,490.97 hectares of crops submerged, and 3,518 villages across 112 revenue circles inundated.

Additionally, at least 92 animals have died due to drowning or while receiving treatment, while 95 animals have been rescued from Kaziranga National Park, Bokakhat, according to official data.

The water levels of the Brahmaputra River have risen above the danger mark at several locations, including Neamatighat, Guwahati, Goalpara, and Dhubri. Other districts facing severe flooding include Cachar, Kamrup, Hailakandi, Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, Goalpara, Dibrugarh, Nalbari, Dhemaji, Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Karimganj, South Salmara, Tinsukia, Charaideo, Barpeta, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Chirang, Majuli, Biswanath, Darrang, Karbi Anglong West, and Kamrup Metropolitan.

The central government’s active involvement and coordination with state agencies aim to mitigate the disaster’s impact and ensure timely assistance to the affected populations.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred after school hours when the accused, reportedly upset over academic scolding earlier in the day, confronted the teacher who was alone in the classroom.

The teacher had reprimanded the student for his poor academic performance, which apparently led to the confrontation.

Police responded swiftly to reports of the stabbing at the coaching center.

Upon arrival, they found the classroom in disarray, with bloodstains and the weapon, a knife, recovered from the scene.

The teacher was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission.

Eyewitnesses, including classmates of the accused, recounted that tensions had escalated earlier in the day when the teacher admonished the student, prompting him to temporarily leave the center.

Upon returning later, a heated exchange ensued between the teacher and the accused, culminating in the fatal attack with the knife.

The accused, who is a minor, was apprehended by the local police and taken to the Sivsagar police station for questioning.

Counselling services are being offered to students and staff affected by the tragedy, with authorities urging for calm and cooperation during the investigation.

Today marked the end of the search effort, as rescue teams recovered a minor’s body in Guwahati’s Rajgarh locality, later confirmed to be Avinash’s by his grieving parents at GMCH.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Sarkar family on Saturday to express solidarity and oversee the search operations.

He reassured the family of the government’s unwavering commitment to finding Avinash, despite the challenging circumstances posed by the floods.
