Guwahati, July 03: Persistent heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh have caused the Burhidihing River to surge, resulting in widespread flooding across multiple villages in Assam.

The inundation has particularly affected the old Kaivarta village and Sasoni in Naharkatia, including areas like Amguri, Bharlua village, Bali village, Tingrai Kaivartya, Dahal Kalagra, and Bamunibil.

Residents are in shock as the flooding has submerged the homes of more than 150 families overnight.

The agricultural community has seen their yearly stockpiles of food and valuables washed away by the overflowing Burhidihing, exacerbating the distress in the region.

Those affected have sought refuge in shelter camps set up by local authorities.

Despite these efforts, many flood victims remain in distress as they witness the devastation, with the surging waters sweeping away doors and causing extensive property damage.

Guwahati, July 03: The ongoing floods in Assam have resulted in the tragic loss of 38 lives, with three more people drowning in the past 24 hours.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that the latest victims included two individuals from Tinsukia district and one from Dhemaji district.

The flood situation has significantly worsened, affecting over 11.34 lakh people across 28 districts.

The most severely impacted districts include Lakhimpur, Darrang, and Golaghat, with thousands of residents displaced. In Lakhimpur alone, 165,319 people have been affected, followed by 147,143 in Darrang and 106,480 in Golaghat.

The deluge has inundated 42,476 hectares of crop area and affected 2,208 villages within 84 revenue circles. Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Subansiri, Burhidihing, Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri (S), Jia-Bharali, Puthimari, Kopili, Beki, Kushiyara, Barak, and Dhaleswari, are flowing above the danger mark at various locations.

Relief efforts are underway, with the administration setting up 489 relief camps and distribution centers.

Nearly 2.87 lakh people are currently taking shelter in these camps.

Additionally, many flood-affected individuals are seeking refuge on higher ground, in school buildings, and on roads and bridges.

Rescue operations involving local administration, the Army, paramilitary forces, SDRF, and Circle Office have been ongoing.

On Tuesday, approximately 2,900 people were rescued from different flood-hit areas. The administration has distributed 10,754.98 quintals of rice, 1,958.89 quintals of dal, 554.91 quintals of salt, and 23,061.44 liters of mustard oil among the affected population. Cattle feed has also been provided to those in need.

The floods have impacted 832,099 animals and caused damage to infrastructure, including 74 roads, six bridges, and 14 barriers, with five dams breached.

The situation remains critical as authorities continue to monitor and respond to the ongoing crisis.

Hazarika strongly criticized the audacity behind these threats, attributing them to an incident during Eid when a member of the minority community peacefully advocated against cow sacrifices.

In his statement, Hazarika highlighted the stark contrast, denouncing the escalation by Mufti Makibar Rehman, who openly threatened to besiege Lakhimpur Police Station and disrupt normalcy from July 6 to 10.

Expressing disbelief, Hazarika lamented how a compassionate plea regarding animal welfare could spiral into such hostile reactions.

Reflecting on the broader implications, Hazarika raised concerns about the direction Assam is heading, urging introspection and decisive action to safeguard peace and order in the state.

New Delhi, July 01: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the results of the retest for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET, conducted late on Sunday night.

The re-examination was arranged for 1,563 students who were previously awarded grace marks due to disruptions during their May 5 exam.

Out of these, 813 candidates participated in the retest across seven centres in Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, and Meghalaya.

Officials reported that none of these candidates achieved full marks, resulting in a reduction of the number of toppers from 67 to 61.

Candidates who did not appear for the retest will retain their original scores without the grace marks. Previously, six candidates from Haryana had scored a perfect 720 out of 720 marks, but in the re-examination, none achieved full marks, according to a government official.

The NTA has notified that revised Score Cards for all NEET(UG) 2024 candidates, including those who appeared for the retest, are now available on their website (https://exams.nta.ac.in/NEET/). Candidates can log in to view, download, and print their updated scorecards.

C J Mannou, an official from the Water Resources Division, issued a warning today, highlighting the escalating flood situation in the region.

The overflow of the Kamlang River into the Barreng River and the surge of the Tengapani River into the Tiyang River have exacerbated the crisis, posing serious threats to villages along their banks.

The Jengthu and Noa-Dehing rivers are also flowing dangerously high, increasing concerns about potential bank erosion.

In a statement on X, the NCW expressed deep concern: “Disturbing report from Laxmikantapur, North Dinajpur, WB: A woman was brutally beaten by Tajemul, aka JCB, known for quick ‘insaf’ sabhas and ties with MLA Hamidur Rahaman. NCW is deeply concerned about rising violence against women in WB.”

The commission has scheduled a hearing for July 4 at 2:30 pm.

They have summoned Tajemul to appear in person or face action, emphasizing their concern over the increasing crimes against women in West Bengal.

BJP chief JP Nadda also condemned the incident, criticizing the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led government.

He further added, “Be it Sandeshkhali, Uttar Dinajpur or many other places, Didi’s West Bengal is UNSAFE for women.”

On Sunday, the West Bengal Police registered a case over the incident after a video of the assault went viral on social media.

The man seen in the video beating the victims with a bamboo stick was allegedly a local Trinamool leader from Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur district.

This act followed a decision by a kangaroo court. The accused, Tajmul alias JCB, has been arrested.

In response, the ruling Trinamool Congress stated that the matter would be thoroughly investigated. The man and the woman have been provided with police security following the attack.

Both studied together in Class 5A at Sainik School Rewa, with roll numbers 931 and 938 respectively.

A statement from the Official Spokesperson of the Defence Minister, A Bharat Bhushan Babu, highlighted the historic significance of this dual appointment from the same alma mater.

“For the first time in Indian Military history, Chiefs of Navy and Army hail from the same school. This rare honour of nurturing two prodigious students, who would go on to lead their respective Services 50 years later, goes to Sainik School, Rewa in Madhya Pradesh,” the spokesperson noted.

Admiral Dinesh Tripathi assumed leadership of the Indian Navy, taking over from his predecessor on May 1, with a distinguished career that includes various command and operational roles within the Navy.
