Buddha Air explores feasibility of Kathmandu to Pakyong flights in Sikkim

Gangtok, June 11: Buddha Air recently visited Pakyong Airport to assess the feasibility of launching flights between Kathmandu and Pakyong.

During the visit, the team received a presentation from the Air Traffic Controller and toured the airport with Airport Director S.K. Singh.

The team comprised Uday Krishna Shrestha, Om Pradhananga, and Jiwan Basnett from Buddha Air.

Buddha Air plans to operate two daily flights: one directly from Kathmandu to Pakyong and another from Kathmandu to Pakyong via Guwahati.

The flight duration from Kathmandu to Pakyong is estimated to be around one hour, while the journey from Pakyong to Guwahati is expected to take approximately 35 minutes.

Initial fare estimates for the Kathmandu to Pakyong route range from Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 7,000, although Singh has urged Buddha Air to consider reducing it to Rs. 5,000-6,000.

The airline is optimistic about passenger demand for these routes, given its successful operations from Kathmandu to Varanasi and plans for a new route from Janakpur to Ayodhya.

The proposed flight timings are tentatively scheduled between 12 noon and 1:30 pm, utilizing ATR 500 aircraft with a capacity of 85-90 passengers.

Rongmei Naga Group Opposes Proposed 24-Hour Shutdown on Manipur’s NH-37


1. The Rongmei Naga Student’s Organisation Manipur (RNSOM) announced no shutdown on NH-37 in the Rongmei Naga territories.
2. RNSOM countered the 24-hour shutdown call by Kuki groups starting from midnight on June 10.
3. The shutdown was jointly called by Kuki Inpi South West Sadar Hills, Kuki Students Organization South West Sadar Hills, and Kuki Women Union Moltam Region.


Imphal, June 11: The Rongmei Naga Student’s Organisation Manipur (RNSOM) has announced that there will be no total shutdown along the NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam Road) in Rongmei Naga territories, countering the call for a 24-hour shutdown by Kuki groups starting from midnight on June 10.

In a statement, the RNSOM explained that the Kuki Inpi South West Sadar Hills, Kuki Students Organization South West Sadar Hills, and Kuki Women Union Moltam Region have jointly called for the shutdown in Kuki-dominated areas along NH-37.

However, the RNSOM emphasized that the entire stretch from Imphal to Jiribam is ancestral Rongmei Naga land, despite claims by the Kukis, whom they described as “new settlers.”

The RNSOM warned that any incidents resulting from the proposed shutdown would be the responsibility of the Kuki community, as NH-37, the lifeline of Manipur, traverses Rongmei Naga land and serves all communities in and outside the state.

The RNSOM firmly stated that NH-37 cannot be used as a platform for acts of terrorism by any organization or individual, now or in the future.

Additionally, the group condemned the recent “barbaric indiscriminate attack” by Kuki militants on state police and the Chief Minister’s security personnel along NH-37.

They cautioned that such attacks on peace-loving communities serving in the state forces could provoke another wave of crisis and be seen as an “open invitation to join the fights.”

The meeting commenced with a solemn two-minute silence in honor of the victims of the recent landslide in Majhua village, Yangang, Namchi District.

This respectful gesture underscored the government’s commitment to addressing the disaster’s aftermath with empathy and decisive action.

In response to the tragic event, the cabinet decided to grant ex-gratia payments according to the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) norms.

Additionally, they resolved to construct a house for each affected family under the Sikkim Garib Awas Yojana (SGAY) scheme. This measure aims to provide immediate relief and long-term support to the families who have lost their homes.

The cabinet also commended the swift response from various departments, local administration, NGOs, and individuals involved in recovery, evacuation, and relief efforts.

Several significant recommendations were made during the meeting. Firstly, the cabinet proposed the appointment of MLA Sanjeet Kharel as the Pro-tem Speaker by the Governor of Sikkim.

The cabinet also announced that the first Assembly session would commence on 12th June 2024.

This session will include the administration of oaths to the Members of the Legislative Assembly and the election of the Speaker.

A notable decision made by the cabinet was the approval of a 4% increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for government employees and the Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners.

This increase raises the DA from 42% to 46%, effective from 1st July 2023, as per the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) recommendations.

This hike is expected to have a fiscal impact of ₹174.6 Crore in the current financial year, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing the financial needs of its employees and pensioners.

Furthermore, the cabinet directed relevant departments to conduct a comprehensive review of the state’s Own Tax and Non-Tax Revenue collection.

This review aims to identify potential areas for increasing revenue, thereby enhancing the state’s financial health.

In addition to these measures, the cabinet recommended a grand celebration of the 50th year of Sikkim Statehood.

The Home Department was tasked with preparing and meticulously executing a calendar of activities for this significant milestone. This celebration is expected to foster a sense of pride and unity among the people of Sikkim.

To improve the functioning of the Education Department, the cabinet decided to subdivide it into two sections: School Education and Higher Education, Technical and Medical Education.

Each section will be headed by a Secretary under the overall charge of the Additional Chief Secretary. This reorganization aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s operations.

The meeting concluded with the cabinet expressing gratitude to the people of Sikkim for their dedication and support, resulting in the country’s highest voting turnout percentage.

This acknowledgement highlights the government’s appreciation for the active participation of its citizens in the democratic process.

The SKM secured a landslide victory, winning 31 out of 32 seats in the assembly elections.

The opposition party, Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), which had governed the state for 25 consecutive years until 2019, secured only one seat.

Gangtok, June 10: Three people lost their lives in a devastating flash flood and landslide that ravaged Majuwa village in Yangang, under Namchi district, early Monday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Yabha Subba, Bishal Rai, and Manita Rai.

The tragedy struck around 5:30 am following heavy rainfall the previous night, causing flash floods in multiple streams across Yangang.

Namchi District Magistrate Annapurna Alley stated, “The flash flood-like situation occurred around Yangang village in many locations. They began from the foothills of Bhaleydhunga cliff above Yangang, leading to landslides and flash floods in several streams.”

The disaster swept away five houses in Majuwa village. One injured individual was rushed to the District Hospital in Singtam, while sources indicate that up to eight additional injured persons have been taken to STNM Hospital for treatment.

The flash floods and landslides have also disrupted local infrastructure, blocking the route from Singtam to Yangang at Sirsey and making the Dikchu road connecting North Sikkim impassable near Makha.

Authorities are currently working on rescue and relief operations, and efforts to clear the blocked roads are underway.

Manipur Chief Minister’s Convoy Attacked En Route to Jiribam; 1 Personnel Injured

Imphal, June 10: An advance security team preparing for Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s upcoming visit to Jiribam was ambushed by suspected armed militants near T Laijang, close to Kotlen on NH 37 Jiribam road at around 10:30 am on June 10.

One security personnel was injured during the attack.

In response, a joint operation by police commandos and Assam Rifles is underway to apprehend the attackers and secure the area.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who is scheduled to visit Jiribam tomorrow, dispatched the advance team earlier today to evaluate the safety and security situation.

However, their mission was disrupted by the ambush near Kotlen on National Highway 37.

IMD Issues Warning for Severe Rainfall and Thunderstorms in Northeastern States

IMD alerts of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on June 10, posing potential disruptions and hazards.

Additionally, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and north interior Karnataka may experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds. Mumbai grapples with continuous rainfall, causing widespread waterlogging due to the early onset of the southwest monsoon.

1. Mushroom poisoning in Meghalaya claimed another life on June 9, with 40-year-old Larita Syiemlieh passing away at Bethany Hospital, Nongpoh.
2. Syiemlieh’s death follows the tragic loss of her two-year-old grandson, who also succumbed to mushroom poisoning days earlier.
3. Both victims, along with three other family members, experienced severe symptoms after consuming multicolored mushrooms on June 1.


Shillong, June 10: Mushroom poisoning in Meghalaya has claimed another life, with a 40-year-old woman succumbing to the effects on June 9. Larita Syiemlieh passed away at Bethany Hospital, Nongpoh, days after her two-year-old grandson lost his life due to the same poisoning.

According to police reports, Syiemlieh was among five family members who consumed multicoloured mushrooms on the night of June 1st.

The others included Syiemlieh’s two daughters, aged 16 and 14, her 25-year-old son, and her young grandson.

Shortly after consuming the mushrooms, the family members began experiencing severe symptoms, including dysentery and vomiting, prompting their immediate hospitalization. Initially, all five were admitted to the Civil Hospital in Nongpoh.

However, due to the severity of their conditions, Syiemlieh and her grandson were later transferred to Bethany Hospital for further treatment.

While the three remaining family members at the Civil Hospital were reported to be stable, the situation took a grave turn for Syiemlieh and her grandson.

The two-year-old boy succumbed to the effects of the poisoning in the early hours of June 5. Despite medical intervention, Syiemlieh could not overcome the effects of the toxic mushrooms and passed away on Sunday.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another mushroom poisoning case in the region.

Last week, four villagers from Laskein C&RD Block, West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, lost their lives after consuming poisonous mushrooms.
