Imphal, May 06: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced the closure of all schools and colleges in the state on May 6 and 7 due to prevailing weather conditions. The decision aims to mitigate risks posed by the current weather situation.

In a statement shared on X, Chief Minister Singh emphasized the precautionary nature of the decision, urging citizens to stay updated and remain indoors for safety.

He assured the public that the government is actively taking measures to safeguard lives and properties and assist those affected.

Additionally, the state government issued a notice requesting the public to report damages resulting from the hailstorm on May 5.

Citizens were asked to provide details and photographs depicting the extent of damage caused by the extreme weather.

Jerusalem, May 05: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that the country’s government has decided to suspend the local affiliate of Qatar’s global news channel Al Jazeera. The statement came amid a long-running dispute between the country and the international network.

Netanyahu named the channel AL Jazeera. 797 says this will keep the Islamic movement in power in Palestine, endangering the old state. He added that Israel would not accept terms that amounted to surrender. He promised to continue the war in Gaza until Israel’s goals were achieved.

Israel has been waging a protracted war with Hamas since October 7, when Hamas fighters attacked old villages and towns, killing 1,200 people, including women and children. 

34,683 people have been killed in Israel’s seven-month war with Gaza, the Hamas-led Gaza Health Ministry said on Sunday. More than 78,018 people were injured in the Gaza Strip. The United Nations called for an immediate cessation of hostilities due to the famine in northern Gaza.

The Palestinian death toll has also strained relations between Israel and its American ally.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken blamed Hamas for the ceasefire. He said the only thing standing between the people of Gaza and the conflict is Hamas.

Qatar, Egypt and the USA are trying to mediate peace between Israel and Hamas.

A Hamas official told AFP there will be no peace until Israel stops fighting and withdraws from Gaza.

On Saturday, the Israeli leader told AFP in Jerusalem that Israel does not accept an end to the war. Israel warned that it would attack Rafah if the hostages were not released.

The country did not send an envoy to Cairo for peace talks.

Israel has not shown any plans to protect civilians, Blinken said on Friday. Otherwise, “we cannot support a major military operation against Rafah because the damage would be greater than is acceptable,” Blinken added.

This revelation surfaced from the affidavits filed by the candidates, with the wealthiest among them being AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, who is contesting from the Dhubri seat.

Representatives from various political parties including Congress, AGP, BJP, AIUDF, Bodo Peoples’ Front (BPF), United People’s Party, Liberal (UPPL), Trinamool Congress, CPI(M), and Ekam Sanatan Bharat, along with four independents, comprise the ‘crorepati’ candidates, constituting 32% of the total contestants.

The declared assets of the candidates vary significantly, with Badruddin Ajmal leading the pack with assets worth a staggering Rs 155 crore.

Independent candidate Dulu Ahmed from Barpeta follows closely with assets worth Rs 63 crore. Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain and BJP’s Bijuli Kalita Medhi, contesting from different constituencies, also feature among the ‘crorepati’ candidates.

However, it’s not just wealth that’s under scrutiny; liabilities also play a significant role. Independent contestant Dulu Ahmed has the highest liabilities at Rs 11.86 crore, followed by BPF’s Kampa Borgoyary and Congress’s Rakibul Hussain.

The Lok Sabha constituencies of Barpeta and Guwahati each boast five ‘crorepati’ candidates, while Dhubri and Kokrajhar (ST) have three and two respectively.

The diverse financial standings of the candidates reflect the complexity of the electoral landscape in Assam, with voters weighing various factors in their decision-making process.

New Delhi, May 05: Air India has adjusted its complimentary cabin baggage allowance for the lowest economy fare segment on domestic flights, reducing it from 20kg to 15kg.

This change is part of the fare families concept introduced by the Tata Group-owned airline last August, aiming to provide more tailored options for passengers.

Previously, Air India’s domestic passengers enjoyed a 25kg cabin baggage allowance, but now, in line with other carriers like IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet, the allowance stands at 15kg.

The fare families—Comfort, Comfort Plus, and Flex—offer varying benefits and fare restrictions at different price points, according to an Air India spokesperson.

Effective May 2, both the ‘Comfort’ and ‘Comfort Plus’ fare categories now offer a 15kg baggage allowance, while ‘Flex’ maintains its 25kg allowance.

For Business Class passengers on domestic routes, the baggage allowance ranges from 25kg to 35kg. International flights have different baggage allowances depending on the destination.

The airline emphasizes that fare families enable passengers to select fares and services that align with their preferences and requirements.

The pricing structure ensures flexibility, with ‘Flex’ fares offering additional benefits such as extra baggage allowance and flexibility in changes or cancellations, albeit at a higher price point.

According to Air India, the price difference between ‘Comfort Plus’ and ‘Flex’ fares on routes like Delhi-Mumbai is typically around ₹1,000, with the latter providing added value worth nearly ₹9,000, inclusive of 10kg extra baggage and no change or cancellation fees.

This development, disclosed by government spokesperson Rekha Sharma, came after cabinet meetings held on April 25 and May 2.

Jaishankar, speaking in Bhubaneswar, emphasized India’s clear stance on boundary matters with Nepal and expressed concerns over unilateral actions amid ongoing discussions.

In June 2020, Nepal updated its political map to include Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura areas, a move India criticized as artificial enlargement.

This significant event will gather esteemed dignitaries, sports enthusiasts, and advocates for gender equality as the team debuts in Manipuri Polo. The team consists of six highly skilled Manipuri women soldiers, meticulously selected in 2023 as part of Assam Rifles’ sports recruitment drive.

Over the past year, these exceptional women have trained rigorously as soldiers and polished their polo skills. This groundbreaking initiative underscores Assam Rifles’ commitment to promoting local sports and empowering women.

Since 2016, Assam Rifles has been recruiting women soldiers for national service. In 2022, the force took a significant step by recruiting women excelling in sports, providing them with new opportunities.

“By empowering women, promoting regional harmony, and preserving Manipur’s rich polo heritage, Assam Rifles is creating a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations,” Maj Gen Singh stated.

“This historic event will revitalize the tradition of Manipuri Polo, which has faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and recent ethnic conflicts in the state,” he added.

Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey will grace the occasion as the chief guest, adding to the significance of the event.
