21-year-old Arya Rajendran chosen country’s youngest Mayor from Thiruvananthapuram

Kerala, Dec 25: Kerala is all set to get a 21-year-old BSc student of Mathematics, Arya Rajendran as the mayor of its capital city Thiruvananthapuram.

Initially, she thought it was a prank played by some of her college friends but a call from the Communist Party of India’s (CPI–M) district secretariat made things clear for the second year B.Sc Mathematics student of the All Saints College– Arya Rajendran (21).

The party has entrusted her with a coveted post. She will be the new Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The state capital has pulled off a mayoral first– she is the youngest Mayor of the country.

“I was into politics at a young age. If the party asks me to take up any role, I will be the happiest to accept it,” said Arya Rajendran, daughter of an electrician K Rajendran and LIC agent Sreelatha Rajendran.

Hailing from a lower-middle-class family, she doesn’t have a motorable road. Basking in the glory of recent local body elections, in which it won the majority of corporations, panchayats, and block bodies, the ruling party sprang a surprise by giving the mantle of the prestigious corporation to a first-time councillor.

Senior party leader Jameela Sreedharan and two others were also in the running, but the party chose a young leader over them.

Call it an election stunt or not, this time the party had experimented with many young faces like Rajendran to take on the might of the Bharatiya Janata Party and incumbency factor and many emerged victoriously.

In the 100-member corporation council, the ruling Left Democratic Front has 52 seats and the BJP is in opposition with 35 seats.

In the council also she is the baby (usually the mayor is called the mother of the city) but politics is nothing new to Arya Rajendran. She became a member of Bala Sangam, a children’s outfit affiliated to the party, at the tender age of six. Now she is its state president and also an office-bearer of the Students Federation of India, the party’s youth wing.

The mayor-designate has quite a few priorities. “A heritage city Thiruvananthapuram is already beautiful. I will make it more clean ensuring proper waste disposal. I will also ensure medical care for all,” she said adding many leaders who have inspired her, and prominent among them were Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Health Minister K K Shailaja.

She said along with her new role she would like to continue her studies. “People in my ward gave me a thumping margin because I was young and a student. I will pursue my studies along with my public service,” she said. Her elder brother works in a West Asian country.

1

Assam, Dec 25: Amid global concerns over the new coronavirus strain, a woman traveller from the UK, who arrived Assam a few days back, has tested positive for Covid19 and has been admitted to the isolation ward of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

State health authorities said they have identified 110 people who have come from the UK in the last one month and 67 of them have been traced and tested for Covid19 so far, and first in Assam. The lone woman traveller found positive is a working professional in Britain.

The sample of the woman, who tested positive, has been collected and will be sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for verification. Health officials said her contact tracing is being done vigorously.

Assam airports do not have direct flight connectivity with any of the airports in Europe, these 110 passengers landed in the state as domestic passengers.

NHM Assam director Lakshmanan S said the health the department is following each of the travellers who have arrived from the UK in recent times.

“If some of the UK returnees are tested with the new coronavirus strain, those people who travelled with them in the same flight have a high chance of turning out positive due to the high transmission rate,” he said.

The SOP issued by the Centre describes the activities to be undertaken at the point of entry and in the community for all international passengers who have travelled from or transited through the UK in the past four weeks (from November 25 to December 23, 2020).

“Respective state governments shall ensure that all passengers travelling from or transiting through airports in the UK and disembarking in India would be subjected to RT-PCR test on arrival. In the case of a positive sample, it is recommended that spike gene-based RT-PCR test should also, be performed by an appropriate laboratory,” it says.

Health officials said the travellers who have come from the UK are being tested and put under quarantine as per protocol to stop any possibility of the spread of the new variant of the SARS- CoV 2 virus.

The SOP issued by the Union health ministry stated that this variant of the virus is estimated to be more transmissible and affecting the younger population.

Congress to ally with Left parties in Bengal Assembly Election 2021

0

Bengal, Dec 23: The Congress formally announced its tie-up with the Left parties for the upcoming West Bengal assembly election in 2021 on Thursday.

West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury took Twitter to announce the news. “Today the Congress high command has formally approved the electoral alliance with the Left parties in the impending election of West Bengal,” he tweeted.

West Bengal, along with Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry, will go to the polls in March-April next year.

The central committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had in October approved the West Bengal unit’s decision to have an electoral understanding with all secular parties, including the Congress, in the upcoming assembly elections.

The CPI (M) political bureau had given its go-ahead to the move but had left the final decision to the central committee.

In the 2016 Assembly election, the central committee of the CPI (M) had rejected the West Bengal unit’s decision to have a tactical seat-sharing understanding with the Congress. In the subsequent elections, the Congress won 44 seats and the Left Front ended up with just 32.

Priyanka Gandhi taken into custody by Delhi Police

0

Delhi, Dec 23: Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other senior party leaders were taken into preventive custody by the Delhi Police after they tried to march to the Rashtrapati Bhawan to meet President Ram Nath Kovind.

The detained leaders were part of a delegation, led by former party president Rahul Gandhi comprising Congress Working Committee (CWC) members and Members of Parliament, that was going to meet the President with 20 million signatures collected in the past three months against the three new farm laws enacted in September this year.

“We are living in a democracy and these are elected MPs. They have the right to meet the President and they should be allowed. What is the problem with that? The government is not ready to listen to the voices of lakhs of farmers camping at borders,” Priyanka Gandhi said.

“Any dissent against this government is classified as having elements of terror. We are undertaking this march to voice our support for the farmers,” she added.

Apart from Priyanka Gandhi, the other leaders detained at Mandir Marg police station are party general Secretary in-charge of organization KC Venugopal, Haryana Congress president Kumari Selja, CWC member Kuldeep Bishnoi and Maharashtra in-charge of HK Patil.

“Sometimes they say we (Congress) are so weak that we don’t qualify to be the opposition and sometimes they say that we are so powerful that we have forced lakhs of farmers to camp at Delhi borders for a month. They should first decide what we are,” Priyanka Gandhi said.

3 NPCC workers abducted from Indo-Bangla border return home in Tripura

Tripura, Dec 23: Three workers with the National Project Construction Corporation Limited (NPCC) was released following payment of ransom who were abducted 16 days ago while engaged in border fencing work along the Indo-Bangladesh border in the eastern part of Tripura, officials said Thursday.

According to sources, a BSF personnel on duty noticed the missing workers crossing the border through pillar number 2273 at DP Para at around 5:50 pm on Wednesday and escorted them to the nearby Bhagirath Para Border out Post (BOP).

Tripura shares 856-km-long the international border with neighbouring Bangladesh, of which about 67 km is unfenced.

A site manager and two other workers engaged in border fencing work were abducted on December 7 by the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), an extremist militant outfit from a bordering village near Malda Kumar Para.

As per the information, construction work was ongoing between border pillar number 2277 and 2278, when the ultras abducted the three workers despite tight security arrangements.

Three NPCC workers — identified as Subhas Bhowmik from Udaipur in Gomati district, Subal Debnath from Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district and Ganapati Tripura from MK Para — were held hostage in NLFT hideouts at the Chittagong Hill Tracts of southern Bangladesh.

The families of the abducted workers claimed that the contractor of the project paid Rs 12 lakh for their safe release after a series of negotiations over the past two weeks. According to sources, the NLFT militants had initially demanded a ransom of Rs 3 crore for their release.

A statement issued by the Tripura police said the NLFT extremists released the kidnapped persons Wednesday evening “due to continuous operations by the local police, security forces and pressure on the overground workers of NLFT inside the state as well as operations conducted by the Bangladesh security forces in their areas.”

Meanwhile, upon receiving information of their return, Superintendent of Police Kishore Debbarma, the BSF commandant and the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) rushed to the spot with a huge contingent of security forces to receive the workers.

The workers, who were released at the Raishyabari border after sunset and escorted by the BSF to their camp, were later interrogated by the security and intelligence officials. The trio was returned to their families early on Thursday morning.

Earlier on December 12, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said his government will not compromise on extremism. He had warned the insurgents of a ‘surgical strike’ over the workers released.

“The Tripura government has taken an uncompromising policy to suppress extremism. We are ready to take all measures. If required, the state government will take the help of the centre,” Deb had said.

The NLFT was banned in 1997 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and has since been involved in violence while operating from their camps across the international border. They have allegedly been responsible for violent activities, including 317 insurgency-related incidents where 28 security forces and 62 civilians lost their lives between 2005 – 2015. Peace talks with NLFT were initiated in 2015 and there has been no violence by NLFT since 2016.
