Subdued Christmas, New Year as night curfew imposed in Manipur

Manipur, Dec 23: In a bid to curb further spread of COVID-19 in Manipur, the State Government has imposed curfew at night on Christmas and New Year.

Manipur was placed under the night curfew on the intervening night of December 23 and 24, to curtail mass gathering for pre-Christmas celebrations.

Night curfew will also remain enforced on the intervening night of December 24 and 25, the Christmas Eve night, from 12 midnight till 4 am.

Manipur will also remain under night curfew from 12 midnight till 4 am on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1, 2021, the New Year night.

Chief Secretary of Manipur Rajesh Kumar informed that on the other days, the curfew will begin at 10 pm and end at 4 am.

In the order issued by Manipur Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar, advised that community feasting should be avoided during the festivals, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Christmas and New Year gatherings in Manipur have also been restricted up to 50 per cent of the hall capacity with a ceiling of 200 persons in closed spaces with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

New coronavirus variant: Meghalaya bans entry of British tourists

Meghalaya, Dec 23: As concerns are on the rise following the emergence of a new coronavirus variant in the United Kingdom (UK), the Meghalaya Government has prohibited the entry of tourists from Britain into the State.

This order has been issued by the Home (Political) Department of the Meghalaya Government and come into immediate effect regarding new coronavirus variant and will be in place until further orders.

“Following the emergence of a new and highly infectious strain of coronavirus in the United Kingdom, all tourists from the United Kingdom are prohibited from visiting the State of Meghalaya with immediate effect and until further orders,” said the order passed by Chief Secretary MS Rao.

Notably, Meghalaya re-opened for tourists from December 21.

Meanwhile, the Health and Family Welfare Department in Meghalaya has asked all the UK returnees or entrants in the past 4 weeks (November 25 to December 23) to declare their travel history of the past 14 days to the Surveillance Units in their respective districts and undergo RT-PCR test.

All those who test positive “shall be isolated in an institutional isolation facility in a separate (isolation) unit”.

Earthquake of magnitude 3.0 hits in Assam

Assam, Dec 23: An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 hit Nagaon in Assam, the National Center for Seismology said on Thursday. No loss of life or property was reported.

As per the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremors were felt around 6:56 am at a depth of 5 kilometres.

“Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.0, Occurred on 24-12-2020, 06:56:06 IST, Lat: 26.10 and Long: 93.01, Depth: 5 Km, Location: 65km SSE of Tezpur, Assam, India, NCS tweeted. Also Read – Mysterious Om Symbol Appears in a Swamp in Assam; Nearby Residents Claim it to be a ‘Positive Sign’.

Woman accuses Jharkhand CM of rape; Justice for Ayesha campaign intensifies

Jharkhand, Dec 23: The campaign for ‘Justice for Ayesha‘ on social media has intensified. People have requested the Mumbai Police to give protection to Aisha. #justiceforayesha has joined the top trend of India in the last 24 hours. A four-page letter is also being shared under this hashtag. In the letter, Aisha is making different allegations against Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren at Bandra Police Station in Mumbai.

A letter has gone viral on social media where a woman has requested police protection fearing safety to her life from Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, whom she has accused of raping her. She has recently registered a complaint accusing Soren of not only raping her but also attempting to kill her.

A Mumbai-based model has alleged that she was not only raped by Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in 2013, saying that he is a ‘Sex Maniac‘ but has also constantly threatened her and the family against speaking about the alleged incident in the public.

The alleged incident came to light after several netizens took to Twitter on Wednesday to trend ‘Justice for Ayesha’ to demand justice for a woman, who was allegedly raped and threatened by the incumbent Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren seven years ago at a hotel in Mumbai.

The issue was propped by Godda MP Nishikant Dubey in June this year, who had demanded the reopening of rape and kidnapping case which was lodged by a Mumbai-based girl against Soren way back in 2013. However, rejecting all allegations, Soren had also filed a Rs 100 crore each defamation suit against Dubey and others, alleging they had published defamatory statements against him.

Mizoram: SSA teachers to get pending salaries before Christmas

Mizoram, Dec 23: Mizoram will also receive the central funds before Christmas, after Meghalaya received its long-awaited Samagra Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) funds.

Mizoram education minister Lalchhandama Ralte informed that “Bringing hope to over 4,000 teachers associated with SSA.”

According to reports, the Centre on December 18 released the sanction order for payment of due salaries to SSA teachers. This comes after the state government pursued the matter for months.

The amount has been deposited into Mizoram’s account and all employees under SSA will be paid their pending salaries from August to December before Christmas said the education minister.

Earlier last week, Mizoram opposition Congress slammed the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) government for putting thousands of employees under financial trouble by failing to pay their salaries.

The party asked Chief Minister Zoramthanga to pay salaries to these teachers before Christmas.

Earthquake of intensity 3.7 shakes Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang

Arunachal, Dec 23: A mild earthquake of 3.7 magnitudes on the Richter scale hit 86 km southwest of Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang area on Wednesday.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the quake hit around 4:37 pm on Wednesday at a depth of 150 km.

National Centre of Seismology share the news on Twitter, “Earthquake of Magnitude:3.7, Occurred on 23-12-2020, 16:37:02 IST, Lat: 27.17 & Long: 96.05, Depth: 150 Km, Location: 86km SW of Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh, India for more information.”

So far, no casualty or damage has been reported. More details are awaited.

Union Health Ministry alerts Tripura Government dispatches fresh SOPs

Tripura, Dec 23: The Union Health Ministry has alerted the Tripura Government in regards to the new strain of coronavirus.

The Union Health Ministry has dispatched fresh Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to the Tripura Government.

According to the fresh SOPs, the State government will arrange COVID-19 tests for all those who travel to the United Kingdom (UK) from 25th November – 23rd December.

The ruling Government has been directed by the Health Ministry to observe the health condition of the UK returnees and report back.

Meanwhile, concerns over COVID-19 the situation in Tripura has also risen following the death of 3 more persons in the last 24 hours.

With 3 fresh COVID-19 related deaths, the State’s death tally has now risen to 380. Moreover, the COVID-19 the mortality rate has also surged with 3 more deaths.

According to Tripura Health Department, the COVID-19 mortality rate in the State now stands at 1.15 per cent.

On the other hand, 13 fresh COVID-19 cases have been detected in Tripura. These 13 fresh cases were detected after conducting tests of 1460 samples.

The total COVID-19 caseload in Tripura has mounted to 33,018 with the detection of 13 fresh cases. However, of the total 33,018 cases, only 192 are active cases.

18 persons were reported to have been recovered from COVID-19 in Tripura in the last 24 hours.

So far, 32,590 persons have been discharged from different hospitals and COVID Care Centres across the State after having recovered from the deadly virus.

The COVID-19 recovery rate in Tripura now stands at 98.27 per cent. Tripura’s positivity rate stands at 5.74 per cent.

Meanwhile, the Tripura Government has claimed the COVID-19 situation in the State has improved in the past couple of weeks with the number of cases detected daily declining and recovery rate showing an upward trend.

However, the opposition parties in the State, countering the claim of the Government, alleged that the number of cases detected daily has decreased because the number of tests conducted daily has also declined.

Clash broke out between TMC and BJP; 4 injured

Clash BJP vs TMC, Dec 23: A clash broke out between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal. The incident happen when TMC workers attacked BJP workers during a rally in Depal under Ramnagar police station.

At least four BJP workers have been injured in this incident and have been rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Anup Chakraborty, district president of East Midnapore said “In Ramlagane, we had our protest from Laluapur to the college more stand. A BJP worker was injured. We are protesting against that incident. We wanted to do a peaceful protest. But then, some leaders of TMC started attacking us. I am the leader of the party. The police are asking me to lodge a complaint and then they will start doing an investigation.”

“I want to end the investigation right here. I am warning you. If you are even a bit ashamed, then you wouldn’t have done this. 10 workers of our party are hurt, are you putting up an act here? This is a worthless political party and you all are the workers of this worthless party. We will take revenge.”

As soon as the TMC attacked it is alleged that stone-pelting has been started from the workers of saffron as well. Police rushed to spot and control the situation.

National Farmer’s day: 5 TMC MPs meet farmers at Singhu Border

Singhu Border, Dec 23: A delegation of Trinamool Congress (TMC) meet farmers who are on a relay hunger strike on the highway at the Singhu Border to show solidarity on the occasion of National Farmers Day.

Derek O’Brien, Satabdi Roy, Prasun Banerjee, Pratima Mondal, and Md Nadimul Haque met the farmers while the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee interacts again with farmers via telephone. On-call, the farmer request Mamata to attend the Dharna.

After that CM Mamata also share a post on Twitter saying “GoWB has been persistent in its efforts to ensure the welfare of farmers.”

Farmers shared their demands in front of WB CM and said the Centre must repeal the farmer bills.

Fourteen years ago, Mamata Banerjee went on a historic 26-day hunger strike against the forceful acquisition of agricultural land, demanding justice for the farmers of Singur. Her stand was vindicated by the Supreme Court in 2016.

Trinamool will stand by the farmers in solidarity, in this movement to repeal the anti-farmer bills.

Farmer groups have appealed to those in Bihar and other states to join the agitation to further pressurize the government to repeal the three contentious farm laws. Meanwhile, thousands of farmers have started from Maharashtra to join the protest at Delhi borders where farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have been camping for weeks.

Farmers coming from Uttar Pradesh to join those in Delhi were allegedly stopped by the police at the Moradabad toll plaza.

One killed, one injured in a road accident in Assam

Assam, Dec 23: A road accident took place in Sangti Hidi under Bokajan Police Station in Assam, Karbi Anglong district, killing one person and injuring another. The deceased is yet to be identified.

The incident occurred when a car rammed into a truck parked on the roadside on the national highway 36 at Sangti Hidi and turned turtle.

The car was on its way from Golaghat to Dimapur in Nagaland at the time of the accident.

Bystanders contacted the 108 ambulance service and the injured was rushed to the Bokajan community health centre.

He was later taken to Dimapur for better medical treatment. Police arrived on the spot and took the body of the deceased for autopsy.
