Hundreds of dead fishes found floating on ‘blue’ Lukha river of Meghalaya

Meghalaya, Dec 26: Hundreds of fishes and fingerlings died and were found floating on the ‘mysterious blue’ waters of river Lukha in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

Villagers from Narpuh Elaka in East Jaintia hills the district informed that hundreds of fishes were found dead and were seen floating on the surface of the ‘toxic’ river.

The villagers undertook boat ride on river Lukha for a closer look at the incidents of fish deaths in the ‘toxic’ river in East Jaintia hills. Between Khaddum village and the Sonapur Bridge, the villagers found hundreds of dead fishes on river Lukha.

Apparently, there are reports of fish deaths in the river Lukha during the last one week south of the Khaddum village.

“Death of the fishes is not a good sign. This river, which has been home to several hundred species of fishes, have turned a killer,” Kwillness Suchaing, president of Narpuh Unit of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), said.

The KSU unit on Monday had submitted a memorandum to E. Kharmalki, deputy commissioner of East Jaintia hills district to conduct a ‘scientific study’ and find out the root cause of the changing colour of the river Lukha.

Since 2007, waters of river Lukha turn blue during the winter months. But, this year, the water quality has reportedly deteriorated further, and has turned ‘deep blue’.

Worried with the rising level of toxicity of Lukha, the KSU has set a deadline of three weeks to the Meghalaya government to identify the cause of the ‘blue water’ and find immediate solutions.

“Otherwise, we will be forced to take actions,” Suchaing said, adding that the cement factories around Thangskai and Lumshnong are the main cause of the pollution in the river system in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

While aquatic flora and fauna have been destroyed due to the ‘toxic’ water of Lukha, two cement companies Topcem Cement and Star Cement has been accused of ‘polluting’ the river system.

In East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, Topcem Cement and Star Cement are the largest producers of cement.

Topcem Cement has its production unit at Umdoh near Thangskai, and its mines are at South Khliehjri. Star Cement has its unit at Lumshnong.

Meanwhile, the toxic ‘blue’ river Lukha is believed to be the main cause of extinction of a critically endangered fish species in Bangladesh’s Sylhet district.

The fish species — Goalpara Loach (scientific name: Neoeucirrhichthys maydelli), which was once found in abundance in river Lubachhara (downstream of Lukha) in Bangladesh, has reportedly ‘extinct’ because of the toxic water.

While the cement companies have always been claiming that they were not responsible for changing the colour of Lukha River, according to experts Calcium Carbonate slush from limestone mines can change the colour of the river waters to ‘blue’.

Abhijit also asked his followers to build such homes for stray dogs in their areas.

“I have been noticing the street dogs for many days. They suffer a lot when it rains, they don’t have any specific place to sleep. Also, some of them are killed by running vehicles. One day, I thought to myself that if I build tiny houses for these street dogs, it will be a great relief,” Abhijit said in his post.

“After thinking for a few days, I noticed that the old televisions ultimately turn into a waste product after a family buys LCDs. So I went out searching for those old televisions. After collecting some, I removed the unwanted parts and with the remaining frame, I designed suitable homes for the street dogs to stay in and titled them as BAATOR GHOR. I have been placing several of them in the streets. I will try my best to collect more television frames and build such homes. If not, I will collect some wooden boxes and place them in the streets,” he added.

West Bengal, Dec 26: BJP leader and MP Sunil Mondal, who had switched over from the TMC to saffron faced protests by the workers of the ruling party in West Bengal when he was going to an office of the saffron camp on Saturday.

The incident happened when Mondal was going to the BJP party office at Hastings in Kolkata.

BJP MP Arjun Singh alleged that TMC miscreants attacked on Mondal.

“Some TMC activists, who were participating in a program there, blocked his car. They sat on the road to stop him from going to our office. They also banged the window panes, pelted his vehicle with stones,” Sunil Mondal said.

This led to a scuffle between the BJP and TMC activists who were present there.

Police rushed to the spot and ensured the safe passage of Mondal’s car.

“This only shows the true colour of the TMC. They don’t believe in any democratic norm. Is this a way to treat a people’s representative?” Mondal asked.

Including heavyweight TMC leader Suvendu Adhikari and five TMC MLAs, Mondal had joined the BJP at Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally in Midnapore on December 19.

Mondal was elected as TMC MP from Purba Bardhaman. The TMC claim that the incident was a reflection of people’s anger against the turncoats.

“It was people’s anger against the turncoats and a spontaneous protest,” TMC MP Saugata Roy said.

Guwahati, Dec 26: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director-General Shafeenul Islam who was in Guwahati for the five-day meeting with his Border Security Force (BSF) counterpart Rakesh Asthana said the problem of Rohingya refugees will remain in India unless they return to Myanmar.

“Rohingya people are the Muslims who not only found in India but they are speeded across the world including Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia etc,” Director General Shafeenul Islam said.

The problem of Rohingya Muslim refugee would be solved when they go back to their country, Myanmar, at the earliest otherwise the problem would remain for India and other countries, he added.

“We are regularly nabbing the Rohingyas at the border, escaping from the Cox’s Bazar camps. There are settlements as well who also have UNHCR cards. They always try to get inside the country to meet their relatives in the Bangladesh camps,” Islam said.

Asthana said that Rohingyas are being occasionally caught in different parts of the country by the state security forces.

“Both BSF and BGB are committed to stopping their infiltration and exfiltration and we are taking action not only against the Rohingyas, but also against all illegal trespassers,” the BSF chief said.

Border Coordination Conference (BCC) BSF chief Asthana led the 12-member delegation while the 11-member BGB team was headed by Islam. DG level meeting or the BCC between the BSF and BGB was held first time outside the national capital.

Rohingyas from refugee camps in southeastern Bangladesh often enter the northeastern states of India illegally in a search of jobs or get trapped in human trafficking.
