BJP’s Himanta Sarma to introduce a bill to repeal Provincialisation of Madrassa

Assam, Dec 28: Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to introduce a Bill to repeal the Provincialisation of Madrassa on Monday. The bill will be introduced to stop the practice of running Madrassa by the Government in Assam. This practice has been started by the Muslim League government in pre-Independence Assam.

BJP Minister took tweeter to share the info and wrote “Today I shall introduce a Bill to repeal the Provincialisation of Madrassa. Once the Bill is passed, the practice of running Madrassa by the Government in Assam will come to an end, a practice which was started by the Muslim League govt in pre-Independence Assam.”

Two weeks ago, Sarma said that the state government has decided to make ‘education secular’ and 198 high madrasas and 542 other madrasas in the state will operate as any other general educational institute and will not give admission to students for theological studies.

Sarma’s reaction comes a day after the Assam cabinet approved the proposal to close down government-run madrassas and Sanskrit tols (schools).

Terming the closure of the government-run madrassas in Assam a historic step, Sarma said the decision was taken to secularise the entire educational system in the state.

The State Madrassa Education Board will be dissolved next year and the staff will be utilized and there would be no change in the service conditions of the employees till retirement.

All theological courses in the madrassas, including the study of the Holy Quran, Hadith, and other aspects of Islamic Studies will be discontinued from April 1, 2021, and the teachers taking theological classes will be trained and engaged in the teaching of other subjects under the general educational system.

In October, Sarma had said that the Assam government spends Rs 260 crore annually on 610 state-run madrassas across the state. He had also announced that the State Madrassa Education Board, Assam would be dissolved.

While Sanskrit tols would be handed over to Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, the government-run madrassas would be converted to high schools.

Sikkim suffers ₹600-crore blow as pandemic cripples the tourism industry in 2020

Sikkim, Dec 27: The picturesque Himalayan state of Sikkim, with a population of under seven lakh, reeled under a serious crisis in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic crippled its tourism industry, the mainstay of its economy.

The tourism sector suffered losses to the tune of ₹600 crore this year due to the pandemic, Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC) chairman Lukendra Rasaily said.

Sikkim was untouched by the pandemic for a long time before coronavirus struck the border state in the last week of May when a student, who returned from Delhi, tested positive.

Two months later, the state reported its first COVID- 19 fatality when a 74-year-old man from East Sikkim district succumbed to the disease.

The virus then spread to all the four districts, including the sparsely-populated North Sikkim, with around 0.8% of the total population found positive.

In all, Sikkim has registered over 5,600 COVID-19 cases so far and more than 120 fatalities.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a debilitating impact on the tourism industry, which is the backbone of the state’s economy,” Raaily said.

The surge in the outbreak could not be tamed despite the state government sealing the borders, banning tourists, and suspending educational activities as early as the first week of March.

India-China trade at the Nathula border pass was also suspended in the wake of the pandemic.

With little room for generating revenues locally, the Prem Singh Tamang government, pinched by business activities remaining shut for months has set up a committee of experts to suggest measures for the revival of the economy. The state is reporting up to 200 cases on a weekly basis at present.

For the first time since the 1800s, Buddhist monasteries of Nynmapa and Khagyu sects in Sikkim will not organize the famed Khagyad Chaam, a traditional mask dance, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The mask dances, performed by monks, are held every year in various monasteries in the state during the Bhutia festival of Losoong (New Year) and are attended by thousands of devotees as well as tourists from all over the world.

In a rare positive development during the year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a 19.85-km alternative road along the National Highway-310 in Sikkim in October.

ILP biggest gift to people of Manipur by PM Modi, says Amit Shah

Assam, Dec 27: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “gifted Inner Line Permit (ILP)” to Manipur as he felt that it would be an injustice to them since other surrounding states have the regime.

Highlighting the slew of development projects launched by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, Shah stated that Manipur – “once a hotbed of insurgency” – is now experiencing a new thrust in development.

“Earlier, Manipur was known for insurgency, bandhs, and blockades, but now most militant organizations have joined the mainstream and those left would also do so following efforts of the BJP government,” he said.

Shah heralded the recently granted Inner-Line Permit (ILP) the system as the best gift for the people of Manipur, one that fulfilled their long-standing demand. “Besides granting statehood to Manipur the gift of ILP is the best gift BJP has given the people of Manipur,” the home minister said.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking the decision to grant ILP to Manipur, Shah said, “Modiji realized that Manipur is not having the Inner Line Permit when other states surrounding it had it which is an injustice to the indigenous people and he found a way.”

The ILP is an official travel document issued by the concerned state government to allow travel of an Indian citizen into a protected area for a limited period. It is obligatory for citizens from outside those states to obtain a permit for entering into the protected state.

The objective behind this is to prevent the settlement of other Indian nationals in ILP states so as to protect the indigenous population and their access to land, jobs, and other facilities. Besides Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland also come under the ILP system.

Shah also talked about the IT SEZ worth Rs 950 crore that will be soon opened which he estimated would contribute around Rs 4,600 crore towards Manipur’s GDP.

The Home Minister also promised a medical hospital in a designated tribal area and urged chief minister N Biren Singh to look into establishing a college for forensic sciences in Manipur in collaboration with the esteemed Institute of Forensic Science for the benefit of the students.

BJP wins in Arunachal Pradesh’s Pasighat civic body polls

Arunachal Pradesh, Dec 27: The BJP wrested the Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) from the Congress by winning six of the eight seats of the civic body in Arunachal Pradesh, while the JD (U), in its maiden contest in the Itanagar Municipal Corporation polls, bagged nine wards. The BJP, the ruling party in the state, won 10 seats, one short of the majority mark, in the 20-member Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC), and the NPP bagged one.

Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports Kiren Rijiju shared the news of the winning in Pasighat Municipal Councilon Twitter. “PM @NarendraModi Ji’s wave and support for @BJP4India continues with a landslide win for BJP in Arunachal Pradesh Panchayat election. BJP swept in Gram Sabhas. For Zilla Parishad Members,” Rijju wrote.

Among the 10 wards won by the BJP in the Itanagar civic body polls, five candidates were elected unopposed, a State Election Commission official said.

The Congress, which had won seven seats in the 2013 PMC elections, secured only two wards this time, and the party failed to open its account in the IMC polls.

The performance of the Janata Dal-United in the civic polls assumes significance as the party received a major jolt in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday, with six of its seven MLAs shifting allegiance to the BJP.

The JD (U), led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, won seven of the 15 seats it contested in the 2019 Arunachal assembly elections and emerged as the second-largest party after the BJP, which had bagged 41 seats.

The PMC had 12 seats, while the IMC had 30 during the 2013 civic polls. However, the number of seats of both the urban local bodies was reduced after the delimitation of wards.

The Congress had won seven seats in the last PMC polls, the BJP bagged two and independent candidates emerged victorious in three.

As per the Nagaland government notification, tourists will be expected to furnish a negative report of Covid-19 test – RT-PCR/TrueNat/CBNAAT – done not earlier than 72 hours prior to arrival.

An Inner Line Permit (ILP) will also be needed for travellers, which will be made available only online in the first phase. Those visiting will be allowed only with pre-booked tour packages, and an e-invite for the itinerary will be generated beforehand for this.

As is the norm for other things, tourists will have to install the Aarogya Setu app on their mobile phones, must wear masks and maintain social distancing wherever they go.

Mukesh Ambani no longer among top 10 richest billionaires in the world

1

Billionaires of the world, Dec 27: Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest person, and the chairman and managing director of oil-to-retail-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries, who earlier this year rose to the fourth spot on the Bloomberg Billionaire Index is no longer among the top 10 richest billionaires in the world.

According to the Bloomberg ranking, Ambani’s current net worth is $76.5 billion (Rs 5.63 lakh crore), down from nearly $90 billion (Rs 6.62 lakh crore) earlier this year.

At present, the RIL top boss is the 11th richest person in the world bellow Larry Ellison of Oracle Corporation and Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, who stood at 10th and 9th position respectively with $79.2 billion net worth.

The drop in Mukesh Ambani’s net worth is because of the correction in RIL shares, which have fallen nearly 16% from their all-time high of Rs 2,369.35 touched after the announcement of its deal to buy retail and wholesale assets of Future group.

Shares of RIL closed at Rs 1,994.15. Over the last two months, RIL shares have witnessed profit booking after US e-commerce giant Amazon challenged its deal with Future group.

Amazon says its 2019 deal in which it invested nearly $200 million in Future Coupons, a Future Group company, had clauses saying the Kishore Biyani-led group could not sell its retail assets to anyone on a “restricted persons” list, which included Reliance.

Despite the recent drop in RIL share price, it is still up 33% year to date, creating over Rs 3 lakh crore wealth for investors. This is half of the wealth created by the conglomerate over the last 25 years.

According to Motilal Oswal’s annual wealth creation study, the oil-to-telecom conglomerate has created a wealth of Rs 6.3 lakh crore between 1995-2020. In the past 25 years (from March 1995-2020), Reliance Industries Ltd has posted a cumulative net profit of Rs 3.78 lakh crore.
