Teen reunited with parents in Assam after three years

0

Assam, Dec 21: Three years after the teen went missing from Cooch Behar district in West Bengal, 15-year-old Mithun Debnath was reunited with his parents in Guwahati.

A special child with mental and learning problems, Mithun was found in Assam’s Dhubri three years ago with no clue how he managed to leave his home and reach another state.

He was soon placed by the district child welfare committee in care of Destination, a Guwahati-based NGO that works with special children. Mithun kept mostly to himself and didn’t speak at all.

A breakthrough took place last month when the chairperson of the Cooch Behar child welfare committee in West Bengal visited Dhubri. The issue was discussed with him and instructions issued to try and trace the address.

The father, a vegetable vendor, said that Mithun had gone to watch a prayer meeting and went missing after that. They had lodged a police case and carried out a search in their area for many months, but failed to get any result.

BJP MP Saumitra Khan to divorce his wife Sujata Mondal after she joins TMC

Bengal Assembly polls, Dec 21: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Saumitra Khan has decided to send a divorce notice to his wife Sujata Mondal Khan just hours after she joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) ahead of the 2021 Bengal Assembly elections.

Sujata Mondal Khan joined the TMC on Monday in Kolkata, revealing the feud in the family. Besides deciding to send a divorce notice, Sujata Khan’s car and house security at Barjora in Bishnupur have been withdrawn.

Saumitra Khan is the president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and MP from Bishnupur.

After joining the TMC, Sujata Mondal Khan said the BJP does not give due respect and honour to people. “Now there are only opportunist and tainted people on the top. There was no respect in the BJP for me,” Sujata Mondal Khan said.

Saumitra Khan challenged the TMC ahead of the polls and said Mamata Banerjee’s party would be thrown out of the state.

Taking another dig at party, Sujata Mondal Khan said the BJP has six chief ministerial candidates and 13 deputy chief minister faces. “Prime minister is a prime minister. He [Narendra Modi] is not a chief ministerial candidate,” Sujata Mondal Khan said.

Addressing Sujata Mondal, Saumitra Khan said, “I request my wife Sujata to stay well and fight out. You have made a mistake, Sujata. I want to tell Abhishek Banerjee, Sujata was my only weakness and now I will sacrifice everything for my party [BJP].”

Saumitra Khan then announced that he would be sending a divorce notice to Sujata Mondal. “I will be sending divorce notice. I will fight TMC. I want to tell TMC that you should be ashamed for breaking my family. There have been so many fights but [I] did not think this will happen.”

BJP will struggle to cross double digits in Bengal polls: Prashant Kishor

Bengal, Dec 21: Political strategist Prashant Kishor predicted a crushing defeat for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Bengal assembly polls on Monday. The party will struggle to cross even the double digit-mark in the polls, Kishor said.

“For all the hype AMPLIFIED by a section of supportive media, in reality, BJP will struggle to CROSS DOUBLE DIGITS in West Bengal,” he tweeted, adding that he would “quit this space” if proven wrong.

Prashant Kishor tweet comes after several leaders, including Trinamool Congress (TMC) heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari join BJP during Union home minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state on December 19.

Leaders from the ruling TMC, Left parties, and the Congress joined the BJP ahead of the assembly elections slated for 2021.

In the upcoming assembly elections scheduled to be held next year, the BJP seeks to put an end to the nearly decade-long rule of the TMC in the state. In the 2019 general elections, even though West Bengal was one of the few states where the BJP was not able to make deep inroads, it had won 18 of the 42 seats, emerging as a clear opposition to the TMC government.

Kishor, who heads the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), is behind several campaigns that led to significant victories for several parties. His first major campaign was for then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in 2011.

In 2014, his campaign group called the Citizens for Accountable Governance led Modi and the BJP to an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday reiterated his stand on the attack on BJP chief JP Nadda’s convoy and called it an ‘attack on democracy’. He held the TMC responsible for the attack and said it proves poor the law and order situation of the state.

Shah also said that his party’s CM candidate in the assembly polls will be someone from West Bengal and not an ‘outsider’, a term used by Banerjee to refer to the BJP’s central leaders when they visit the state.

“Does she want a country where people from one state will not visit another? Did she call Indira Gandhi, Pranab Mukherjee, Narasimha Rao outsiders when they used to come to West Bengal? But don’t worry, no one from Delhi will come to defeat you. Someone from Bengal will challenge you and be the next CM of the state,” he said.

Tripura, Dec 20: A 22-year-old Tripura college student started his own business of manufacturing LED bulbs and is employing people at his unit in the time when people were losing their jobs during a pandemic.

A second-year student of English Honours, Rohit Bhattacharjee has started a unit of LED bulb manufacturing at Mahaprabhu Sarani in Dharmanagar subdivision of North District.

Being a student, Rohit has nothing much for investment except an amount of nearly Rs. 1 lakh which he saved from his pocket money since he was in Class 10. He even sold out his motorbike which was a gift by his parents.

“My objective is to illuminate every house in Tripura at an affordable price. I had an interest in knowing how people can use LED lights at the lowest price. I started surfing the internet, read books and found how to manufacture LED bulbs, and finally set up a unit at the end of February this year,” said Rohit.

He bought a punching machine, cap fitting machine along with some raw materials for the LED bulbs to start his business. He used a room at Dharmanagar for his LED bulb manufacturing unit.

Gradually, he started becoming confident in his business by getting orders from the local retailers. Above all, he started employing people during the crucial time of the Covid-19 lockdown. Currently, eight persons including seven skilled labour, electricians, and one manager are engaged with his project. Of them, two are women.

Among the employees, three joined his project after losing their jobs in Bangalore.

“We manufacture 600-700 LED bulbs per day and each LED bulb costs Rs.65. Each worker prepares at least 100 bulbs a day and they get Rs. 4 for each bulb. After Dharmanagar, retailers from Panisagar in North district, Kailasahar and Kumarghat in Unakoti district, and Agartala started placing orders from my unit,” the Tripura college student said and expressed his hope that his unit could generate more employment opportunities in the future.

His employees earn Rs. 12,000-15,000 per month from the project.

Tripura records the coldest temperature this season

Tripura, Dec 20: Tripura has recorded the coldest temperature this season, with the mercury plummeting to 6.9 degrees Celsius in Agartala in the wee hours of Saturday morning. The highest temperature recorded during the day was 24.6 degrees Celsius, which was about 0.8 degree Celsius below the normal.

The Met department said this was the lowest temperature recorded during December in the state for the last few years.

Clear skies and the unobstructed flow of cold winds from the Himalayas are bringing down the temperature.

According to the agro-meteorological department of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Tripura Centre, the state had recorded the same temperature on January 13th of 2013 after which there was no record of such fall in temperature.

The cold conditions are set to prevail across the state in the next week, and there is a chance of further drop in temperature on January 12th or 13th unless there comes a local disturbance in the weather cycle.

2 frozen fish packages from India tested positive for COVID in China

India-China Import, Dec 20: China has suspended importing seafood from an Indian company after three frozen fish packages tested positive for COVID, local customs authorities said on Friday.

The frozen cuttlefish packages imported from a Kolkata-based company tested positive for the coronavirus, the General Administration of Customs of China said in a statement.

State media reports said that it wasn’t the first time that frozen food like fish in this scenario, imported from India had tested positive for COVID in China. Earlier this month, packages of frozen hairtail fish tested positive in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province in north China.

The suspension of import is likely to be followed by testing of all workers involved in the import of this particular batch of cuttlefish. Local authorities had subsequently launched nucleic acid testing and centralised quarantine for the workers involved, the report said, adding results of all nucleic acid tests were negative.

“Two packages of frozen fish imported from #India tested positive for the #coronavirus on Saturday in Shenyang, NE China’s Liaoning Province. Local authorities have launched epidemiologist investigation. None of the fish has entered the local market,” claimed Global Times.

Earlier in November, three imported frozen food packaging samples tested positive for COVID-19 in Wuhan.

The Wuhan health commission informed that two of the three samples were taken from frozen Brazilian beef stored in a refrigerated warehouse.

The third sample was taken from frozen Basa fish from Vietnam in another warehouse.
