The joint statement comes after the two leaders had met Union Home minister Amit Shah in Delhi on October 20. Nagaland government had called a consultative meeting with representatives of all the civil society organisations, political parties, ex-parliamentarians and public leaders. The opposition NPF acknowledged the content and spirit of the resolutions adopted during the October 15 consultative meeting. They urged the Centre and the Naga organisations participating in the peace talks to “arrive at an early solution“, which will bring prosperity to the people of the region, according to the statement issued on Friday.

BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won two seats, while the opposition Congress was decimated with just one seat in its kitty. The ruling party defeated the Congress in most of the seats it won and humbled a few Independent contestants in some places, according to the counting updates.

BJP’s Moniram Patar from Gobha constituency has won uncontested. A total of 124 candidates were in the fray and over 71 per cent of the 3,08,409 voters exercised their franchise on 17 December in 36 constituencies spread across Nagaon, Morigaon, Hojai, and Kamrup Metropolitan districts.

The saffron party has performed impressively in the back-to-back elections in Bodoland Territorial Council and Tiwa Autonomous Council, just months ahead of the state polls due early next year.

In the recently concluded elections of the 40-member Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), the BJP formed the board in alliance with two other local parties.

The incumbent Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) became the single largest party with 17 seats. The United People’s Party Liberal won 12 and the BJP nine, while the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) and Congress bagged one seat each.

After the results were declared, one BPF and the lone Congress members switched over to BJP, taking the saffron party’s tally to 11. The BJP dumped its state ally BPF and tied up with UPPL and GSP to jointly form the BTC government.

The Medinipur College Grounds saw enormous crowds in one of the first big rallies, with little attention to COVID-19 protocols, in the state ahead of the 2021 assembly polls.

In addition to Adhikari, nearly 50 former TMC, Congress and Left front leaders joined BJP in Shah’s presence. Among them were Bardhaman East MP Sunit Mondal, former MP Dasharath Tirkey, Contai MLA Contai Banashree Maity, Haldia MLA Tapashi Mondal, CPI MLA Ashok Dinda, Barrackpore MLA Shilbhadra Dutta, Gajan MLA Dipali Biswas, former state minister Shyamapada Mukherjee, and Kalna MP Biswajit Kundu.

Nine sitting MLAs, including five from Mamata Banerjee’s party, were among those who joined the BJP.

“I have a long association with Amit Shah Ji,” said Adhikari, addressing the rally. “I have been loved like a brother by the BJP. When I was afflicted by COVID-19, no one from the TMC for whom I have given my life, asked me how I was. But Amit Shah did, twice,” he added.

Adhikari finally resigned from the Mamata Banerjee-led party on Thursday, at once expressing fear that he may be implicated in criminal cases because of his exit.

“I want Kolkata and Delhi to have the same government, otherwise, Bengal will not be saved,” Adhikari said.

In a direct challenge to Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, Adhikari gave out a call to remove the “extortionist nephew.”

Shah had earlier said on Saturday that pre-Independence revolutionary Khudiram Bose is as much pride for the whole of India as he is of Bengal, hitting out at those indulging in “narrow politics of regionalism.”

A portion of the crowd visibly left the grounds after Adhikari’s speech and before Shah took to the podium.

“An MP, 9 MLAs, one MoS…have joined us,” said Shah an address peppered with mentions of farmers.

The recognition was part of the chief minister’s ‘War against Drugs’ initiative.

Brinda’s decision comes a day after the Special Court (ND & PS) Manipur acquitted Lhukosei Zou, a former chairman of the Autonomous District Council (ADC), Chandel, and six others in the 2018 drug haul case.

Brinda said, “My charges against the system are hence proved.”

She had made news earlier this year for her allegations against the Chief Minister, of directly, and through his senior officials, “piling pressure” on her to release Zou.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh Friday, Manipur Cop Thonaujam Brinda wrote: “I feel morally inclined that I have not conducted my duty as ‘per the wishes’ of the Criminal Justice Delivery System of the land. Hence, for the reason cited above, I do not consider myself deserving of the honour bestowed upon me by your good self. I, therefore, return the same to the State Home Department so that it may be given to a more deserving and loyal police officer.”

Indian Vice President releases book ‘Oh Mizoram’; A collection of poems by Mizo Governor

Mizoram, Dec 18: Indian Vice President, M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday called for fully tapping the immense tourism potential of the North-Eastern states and underlined the need to improve air connectivity to the region.

He said that eco-tourism and cultural tourism can become the mainstay of development in the North-East if the tourism potential was fully leveraged.

Noting the efforts of Central and State governments in providing connectivity and tourism infrastructure, Naidu said “improving air connectivity to the region can singularly bring a significant positive impact on tourist inflows. Pointing out that India has 26 million outbound tourists every year, the Vice President said that one could assume that most of them would prefer to ‘travel local’ in the post-Covid-19 phase. This presents a huge opportunity for North-Eastern states to promote the tourism sector for this domestic audience.”

Urging the state and central governments to fully tap the tourism potential of the region, he suggested to them to consider the possibility of incentivizing travel to the North-East.

Virtually releasing the book ‘Oh Mizoram’, written by Governor of Mizoram, Shri P S Sreedharan Pillai, the Vice President, praised the region for its pristine natural beauty and said that Mizoram’s colorful festivals, folk music, and energetic dance make Mizo society truly unique. Often called as “Songbird of the East”, the Mizos are blessed with a natural music talent, he added.

The Vice-President said “the whole of North-East the region presents a mosaic of diverse Indian culture with its more than 220 ethnic groups and an equal number of dialects.”

Referring to a poem on ‘Diabetes’, Naidu observed that a large number of Indians are in the grip of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity due to sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy food habits.

North-Eastern people, who live harmoniously with nature and eat a natural diet can show the way to the rest of India in adopting a healthy lifestyle.

The Vice-President also commended the people of Mizoram for recording great social indicators in literacy (with over 91 percent) and the child sex ratio. Mizoram also holds the highest child sex ratio with 971 females against 1000 males according to the 2011 Census, he noted.

The event was attended by the Hon’ble Governor of Mizoram, P S Sreedharan Pillai, Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Development of North-Eastern Region, Dr. Jitendra Singh were among other dignitaries that attended the event.
