After TMC, now CPIM MLA says she will join BJP at Amit Shah rally

2

Bengal, Dec 18: Amid rumors of a growing number of TMC leaders switching sides to the BJP, a CPIM MLA has announced that she will join the BJP at Union Minister Amit Shah’s rally on Saturday.

Tapsi Mondal, CPIM MLA from Haldia, said on Friday that she is mentally exhausted in her party and will soon join the BJP.

“I am mentally devastated here in the CPM. I have been with the party in its most difficult times but the party is not reaching out to the poor. The local-level organization has decayed. So, I don’t think we can work for the people staying in this party,” Mondal said.

Mondal said that she will join the BJP during Amit Shah’s rally on Saturday. Meanwhile, CPIM has expelled Mondal from the party.

Amit Shah will arrive in Kolkata on Friday night on a two-day visit to take stock of the BJP’s affairs in the state as the Assembly elections draw near. While senior BJP leaders have paid multiple visits to the state in the last few weeks, Amit Shah’s visit comes at a time the ruling TMC is facing a rebellion.

Speculation is rife that heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari, who quit the TMC and gave up cabinet portfolios in the Mamata Banerjee the government may join BJP during Amit Shah’s visit along with a slew of disgruntled TMC leaders, including some ex-MLAs such as Silbhadra Dutta and Jitendra Tiwari.

No coercive action against BJP leaders till next hearing: SC notice to Bengal govt

West Bengal, Dec 18: Supreme Court issued a notice to the ruling government of West Bengal and ordered no coercive action should be taken against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in connection with the cases lodged against them in the state on Friday.

The top court barred the West Bengal Police from taking any coercive action against BJP’s national vice president Mukul Roy, MPs Kailash Vijayvargiya, Arjun Singh, and two other BJP leaders till the next date of hearing in January 2021.

A three-judge bench, headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul heard the pleas filed by the West Bengal BJP leaders alleging “false FIRs” against them by the state police. The petitioners have alleged that the state govt was foisting criminal cases to deter them from carrying out political activities.

The Supreme Court also sought a reply from the Mamata-led government on four separate pleas filed by the BJP leaders. The bench posted the batch of pleas for further hearing in the second week of January.

Besides Roy, Vijayvargiya, and Singh, two other BJP leaders – Sourav Singh and Pawan Kumar Singh – have moved the apex court for protection in cases lodged against them in the state.

While granting protection to these five leaders, the bench directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to submit in a sealed cover a report regarding alleged scuffle between TMC workers and security staff of West Bengal Bhartiya Janta Party leader Kabir Shankar Bose, who has filed a separate plea in the top court.

150 shops gutted after a major fire in Dhupguri market

North Bengal Market, Dec 18: A major fire broke out at a market in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal in the wee hours of Friday, gutting at least 150 shops, officials said. The flames were spotted around 3 am at the Dhupguri market by a shopkeeper, they said.

Six fire tenders were rushed to the spot but the firefighting operations could not be started for some time as there were no water bodies nearby, officials said. Finally, water was fetched from the Kumlai nullah, while several shops were gutted in the meantime.

“It was very difficult to get water to fight the fire as there are no water bodies near the market,” District Fire Officer Pradip Sarkar said. Four more fire tenders were brought in from Dinhata in Coochbehar district, Toofanganj, and other areas to douse the flames, officials said.

The blaze was brought under control. No one was injured in the incident.

North Bengal Development Minister Rabindranath Ghosh visited the area and spoke to officials. Local MLA Mitali Roy of the Trinamool Congress was also at the spot. “I have come here on the instructions of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,” Ghosh said.

He also briefed Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim about the situation and urged him to take steps to hand over the market to Dhupguri Municipality. At present, it is in the jurisdiction of the Zilla Parishad. “Around 150 shops were gutted in the fire,” the minister said.

The state government will extend all possible help to the shopkeepers of North Bengal market at this time of crisis, he said, adding that the gutted shops will be reconstructed. Environmentalists alleged rampant filling up of water bodies in the area, leading to the crisis for water.

Water bodies have been filled up in the area, causing the water crisis at the time of need, as a result of which so many shops were gutted, they said.

The drug consignment, being brought in red Wagon R the taxi was initially intercepted at Rangpo Check Post and later caught at Samdong, East Sikkim.

The police also recovered 3,684 loose capsules, 380 N10 capsules, and 21.24 gms of brown sugar along with Rs. 1.30 lakh in cash from a residential complex in Samdong village, which was acting as a store for all the consignment.

Gurung stated, “The consignment being brought along with the peddlers were being tracked for days. We knew when they left Siliguri with the consignment at 4:30 am on December 17, later they reached Rangpo check post around 7:30 am, but we were able to intercept only an hour later at Topa Khani further inward along the NH 10 heading towards Gangtok. The five paddlers, including the Sikkim Police official, will be presented in the Court. The Police officer will be booked under criminal proceedings along with a departmental inquiry on his conduct.”

Sikkim Police maintained that the accused police officer misused his power and his uniform to work as a facilitator to bring drug consignment into the State.

“There have been a few cases in the past as well when Police officers have been involved in drug trafficking, but we feel this incident doesn’t lay precedence. There is a presence of officers taking drugs in the department and that is a known fact, but they are part of the same society hampered by the drug menace. We do not feel there is a big racket inside the department but just a few who are working as peddlers in such a manner along with their personal drug abuse-related problems. The officer in the recent bust was caught red-handed in his uniform in the vehicle with the drugs.“
