Meghalaya: CM Conrad Sangma approaches centre for financial aid

Meghalaya, Dec 17: Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma has requested the central government to release the state’s share from central taxes to bail out his government of the financial crisis that it is currently facing.

Meghalaya depends hugely on central taxes, but the delay in the release of the share has further worsened the financial situation, says Conrad Sangma

From April to October this year, Meghalaya received a share of Rs 2,273 crores, which is a deficit of Rs 727 crores from the budget an estimate of around Rs 3,000 crore.

“Overall, the financial position is not good, because we depend mainly on the share from central taxes. For a state like ours, the shortfall of Rs 727 crores is very big,” Meghalaya chief secretary, M S Rao said.

He said that the economy in the country as a whole has been affected and economic activities are yet to resume fully because of restrictions imposed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Generally, there is less spending when economic activities do not resume fully.

“We hope Meghalaya’s share would be better in the last three months of the current financial year,” Rao said.

He also dispelled the fear that government employees may not get their salaries because of the current financial crunch that the state is facing.

Nagaland: World Bank to fund project worth 63 million dollars

Nagaland, Dec 17: The World Bank approved a project worth 63 million dollars for Nagaland to enhance quality education by developing different resources in the schools of the state.

The project is part of the four development projects worth over 800 million dollars that the World Bank approved for India.

The project termed “Nagaland: Enhancing Classroom Teaching and Resources Project” to improve classroom teaching and create opportunities for enhancing the teaching skills of teachers.

The project will build technology systems for students and teachers with more access to blended and online learning. It also aims to better monitor policies and programs on school education.

Such an integrated approach will complement conventional delivery models in schools and help mitigate the challenges posed by COVID-19, said a statement issued by the World Bank.

“The four projects will support India’s efforts to rebuild by creating a sustainable and resilient economy,” said Junaid Ahmad, country director of World Bank India.

“Development work today has to cater to the poor and vulnerable families to help them recover from the adverse impact of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic,” Ahmad said.

These four projects will help many families in India to access better income opportunities, education, water supply, and benefits from the expanded social protection schemes of the government.

On the other hand, the “Chhattisgarh Inclusive Rural and Accelerated Agriculture Growth Project” worth 100 million dollars will develop sustainable production systems to enable tribal households in remote areas of Chhattisgarh to produce diversified and nutritious food throughout the year.

The “Second Accelerating India’s COVID-19 Social Protection Response Programme” worth 400 million dollars will support India’s efforts at providing social assistance to poor and vulnerable households, severely impacted by the pandemic.

The “Second Dam Improvement and Rehabilitation Project (DRIP-2)” worth 250 million dollars will improve the safety and performance of existing dams across various states of India.

Suvendu Adhikari resigns as TMC MLA

West Bengal, Dec 16: Disgruntled Trinamool Congress leader Suvendu Adhikari resigns from the membership of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Wednesday amid indications that he would join the BJP during Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state on December 19-20. Adhikari, who was MLA from Nandigram, submitted his handwritten resignation to Speaker of the Assembly Biman Banerjee.

The growing rift between the TMC and Suvendu Adhikari became apparent after he resigned from the post of a minister in the Mamata Banerjee cabinet. The 49-year-old leader was in charge of the department of transport, irrigation and waterways. Around the same time, Suvendu Adhikari also resigned from the post of chairman of the Hooghly River Bridge Commission.

On Sunday, the Trinamool Congress expelled a leader of its East Midnapore district unit, Kanishka Panda, considered close to party heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari.

“As of now it is expected that Adhikari will join the BJP at the (East Midnapore) rally,” said a BJP source. However, sources also said that Adhikari had earlier gone back on two dates of joining that he had committed to the party leadership.

On Tuesday, BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya called up Adhikari to wish him on his birthday, further fuelling speculation. Adhikari, an influential leader with a mass base, could influence votes in at least 40 Assembly constituencies in six districts.

Suvendu’s rise began after Mamata’s Nandigram movement in Purba Medinipur in 2007, which he closely coordinated on the ground. The Nandigram agitation played a powerful role in ending the Left Front’s 34-year-rule in the Assembly election of 2011. Mamata was impressed, and over the years that followed, she gave respect and importance to Suvendu and his family, and rewarded them for their dedication to the TMC.
