Assam, Dec 14: Assam’s Darrang deputy commissioner, Dilip Kumar Borah on Monday urged the public to get their children vaccinated against tetanus and diphtheria during the immunization campaign that began in the district.

The state health department launched the immunization campaign to vaccinate children in Assam’s Darrang, in the age group of 10-11years and 16-17 years against the two diseases.

“The modern vaccines are painless and there is hardly any possibility of any adverse effect occurring,” said Borah during the launch of the campaign.

The health department aims to vaccinate 40,000 children during the campaign that will continue till January 4.

Health officer, Nirmal Kumar Beria said, “This Td the vaccine is not new for children they have already taken its first dose during routine immunization after their birth.”

“The booster dose will be administered to them now,” he said.

While the Tetanus-Diptheria (Td) vaccine is usually administered to children during routine immunization programmes, the health the department has this time decided to administer it during a campaign.

The present pandemic has disrupted the routine immunization programmes in the state.

Girl undergoes brain surgery while playing piano

0

Madhya Pradesh, Dec 13: A nine-year-old girl from Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior underwent brain surgery in a fully conscious state at the Birla Hospital. The girl named Soumya underwent the surgery to remove a tumour in her brain and throughout the operation, she kept playing the piano.

As per the information, when Soumya was brought to the hospital for treatment, doctors said that it would be difficult to perform a major surgery on her as there was a possibility of damage to the other nerves of her brain. Hence, doctors decided that her surgery will be done in an ‘Awake Craniotomy’ method.

And, as Soumya enjoys playing the piano, the team of doctors asked her to play the musical keyboard during the surgery. She was given local anaesthesia only in the part of her head where the surgery was performed.

The neurosurgeon who conducted the surgery termed the case as a challenging one and said that it was successful with the whole team’s efforts.

How COVID kills by damaging lung cells, Find out what the researchers have to say

2

How COVID kills, Dec 14: Scientists have decoded the chain of molecular responses of human lung cells to infection to understand exactly how COVID kills us slowly, an advance which may aid in the identification of clinically approved medications that can be re-purposed for COVID-19 treatment.

The study said, “assessed engineered cells of the human lungs’ air sacks using precise mass spectrometry technology that can characterize the molecules present in samples“.

Based on the analysis, the scientists from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) in the US, identified proteins and pathways of molecules in lung cells whose levels change upon infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

It is believed the findings provide insights into disease pathology and new therapeutic targets to block COVID-19.

They found that a crucial type of protein modification called “phosphorylation” becomes aberrant in these infected lung cells, mainly answering how COVID kills humans.

According to the study, phosphorylation of proteins plays a major role in regulating protein function inside the cells of an organism.

It is to be noted that both protein abundance and protein phosphorylation is typically a highly controlled process in the case of healthy cells.

However, the scientists discovered that SARS-CoV-2 throws the lung cells into disarray, causing abnormal changes in protein amounts and frequency of protein phosphorylation inside these cells.

These abnormal changes, the scientists said, help the virus to multiply — eventually destroying the cells and resulting in widespread lung injury.

Upon infection, the researchers said the coronavirus rapidly begins to exploit the cell’s core resources, which are otherwise required for the cell’s normal growth and function.

“The virus uses these resources to proliferate while evading attack by the body’s immune system. In this way new viruses form which subsequently exit the exhausted and brutally damaged lung cells, leaving them to self-destruct,” said Andrew Emili, study co-author from BUSM.

“These new viruses then infect other cells, where the same cycle is repeated,” Emili explained.

In the study asking the question how COVID kills humans, the scientists examined lung alveolar cells from one to 24 hours after infection with SARS-CoV-2 to understand what changes occur in these cells immediately — at one, three, and six hours after infection by SARS-CoV-2 — and what changes occur later — at 24 hours after infection.

“Our results showed that in comparison to normal/uninfected lung cells, SARS-CoV-2 infected lung cells showed dramatic changes in the abundance of thousands of proteins and phosphorylation events,” said Darrell Kotton, study co-author and professor of pathology & laboratory medicine at BUSM.

“Moreover, our data also showed that the SARS-CoV-2 virus induces a significant number of these changes as early as one-hour post-infection and lays the foundation for a complete hijack of the host lung cells” added Elke Muhlberger, another co-author of the study.

The researchers also identified at least 18 pre-existing clinically approved drugs which were developed originally for other medical conditions that could be re-purposed for use towards COVID-19 therapy.

They believe further studies can shed light on the potential of these drugs to block the proliferation of the novel coronavirus in human lung cells.

Army aspirant ends life over after being harassed by 3 men

1

Maharashtra, Dec 14: A 17-year-old girl, an Army aspirant allegedly committed suicide in Pandharpur town of Maharashtra’s Pune after being harassed by three men.

The teenager, who aspired to join the Indian Army, hanged her herself to death at her home as she was fed up with the “constant teasing” by three men, a police officer said.

According to police, the girl was found hanging on December 7 morning.

The Army aspirant teen also left a suicide note where she apologized to “Bharat Mata” and her parents, saying her dream of donning the Army uniform and tri-colour badge could not be fulfilled as she would end her life after being harassed by the three men and also named the three accused in her suicide note.

Three days after the girl ended her life, her family found a suicide note in one of her notebooks, police said.

“In the note, the girl wrote that her dream of donning the Army uniform and tri-colour badge would not come true as she was going to commit suicide due to the constant teasing by three accused,” senior inspector Prashant Bhasme of Pandharpur rural police station said.

“As per the suicide note, one of the accused had held the deceased’s hand and had threatened her not speak about it,” Bhasme said.

“In the note, the girl alleged that the three accused used to pass remarks at her, due to which she felt harassed,” the officer said.

Will fast in solidarity with protesting farmers: Arvind Kejriwal

0

Delhi, Dec 13: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he will hold one-day fast on Monday in support of farmers protesting the three farm laws and also urged the workers and supporters of his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to join him. He announced the news on Sunday.

Kejriwal asked the central government to roll back the three contentious farm laws which were implemented by the Centre in September, and demanded a new bill to ensure minimum support prices (MSP) for farmers – currently a policy issue – be drafted and tabled.

“I request all party (AAP) supporters and people across the country to observe fast for a day tomorrow (Monday) in solidarity with protesting farmers. I shall be observing a day’s fast too… Let’s support our farmers from our homes. I understand that many of us can’t be physically present in the (state) border points where the protesting farmer groups have gathered,” the chief minister said.

On the people being called “anti-national” who support the protesting farmers, Kejriwal reminded of the 2011 Anna Hazare-led movement against corruption, saying that Congress then had done a similar thing to disregard the movement.

“In the last few days, I have seen several ministers and BJP leaders calling the protesting farmers anti-national. I have a question for them: So many ex-servicemen, sportspersons, artists, doctors, lawyers, businessmen have been supporting the protests in some way or other – are they all anti-national? During the Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption movement in 2011, Congress had done similar things to bring disrepute to the movement. The BJP is doing the same thing now,” Arvind Kejriwal said.

Thousands of farmers from Haryana and Punjab have been protesting in and around several borders of Delhi against the three farm laws. The government pushed for the agriculture laws saying that it will bring major reforms in the farming sector that will help eliminate the middlemen from the equation, allowing the farmers to sell their products anywhere in the country.

However, the farmers are apprehensive of the new laws and say that it will take away the safety cushion of MSP and mandi system, due to which they will have to be at the mercy of corporate leaders.

“Some people claim that only a few farmers from Punjab and Haryana are participants in the protest. It is their misconception. Farmers across the country are troubled… The new bills make hoarding legal. It will lead to inflation… I urge the central government to leave behind their ego, roll back the three laws and prepare a new bill to ensure minimum support price for farmers,” Kejriwal added.

BJP chief JP Nadda tests positive for coronavirus

1

JP Nadda, Dec 13: Jagat Prakash Nadda, the national president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Sunday, said that he has tested positive for novel coronavirus.

“On getting the initial symptoms of the coronavirus, I got the test done and the report came back positive. My health is fine, following all the guidelines in home isolation on the advice of doctors. My request is, whoever has come in contact in the last few days, please isolate yourself and get yourself checked,” JP Nadda wrote on social media platform Twitter.

Nadda’s convoy was pelted with stones last week by alleged Trinamool Congress workers at Sirakol in Diamond Harbour area of South 24 Parganas district, where he had gone to address a rally. Nadda called the attack “unprecedented” and alleged the state has slipped into “complete lawlessness and goonda raj“.

All BJP leaders in the convoy had been injured in the attack, except Nadda as he was in a bullet-proof car, Mukul Roy, national vice-president of BJP said.

India reported 30,254 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, according to the data released by the Union ministry of health and family welfare. With 391 new deaths, India’s COVID-19 death toll climbed to 1, 43,019. The active number of coronavirus cases continued to decline. At present, India has 3.6 lakh active coronavirus cases.

The total number of recovered coronavirus patients stood at 93, 57,464.

Will conduct surgical strikes against terrorists, says Tripura CM

Tripura, Dec 13: Tripura CM, Biplab Kumar Deb said the government will carry out a surgical strike on terrorists if they do not release the civilians they have kidnapped from different parts of the state.

Deb has again made many wonders what he intends to do said his government has information about these extremists and will not spare them for kidnapping people for ransom.

Tripura CM Biplab Deb further said this at a martyr’s memorial program held in Kalyanpur of Khowai district to pay tribute to 24 people killed in a terrorist attack in Kalyanpur in 1996.

“Our government knows how to carry out surgical strikes as similar strikes were conducted by the Modi government in Pakistan. We will not carry out surgical strikes on the terrorists if they do not release the civilians in their captive soon,” said Biplab Deb.

CM said that extremist forces are trying to destabilize peace in Tripura and he asked the extremists to give up arms and return to the mainstream.

TMC is trying to fetch sympathy votes: BJP Dilip Ghosh

Bengal, Dec 13: BJP State President and MP Dilip Ghosh claimed that TMC is trying to get the sympathy from the people of Bengal by claiming BJP may conspire to assassinate Mamata Banerjee by sending people secretly if it doesn’t win in the upcoming polls.

“The person who lost all the support is now speaking for the sake of sympathy. Why suddenly Mamata Banerjee is talking to be prisoned as she is well aware of the fact that she has to go to jail after this election. She is saying that someone is conspiring to kill her, but why someone will do such a crime? In fact, her party workers are killer others. She is trying to gain sympathy for the votes but the people of Bengal are no more in support of her,” said Dilip Ghosh of BJP.

West Bengal’s Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee gave this statement while addressing a rally in the state.

“There are two-three houses in a slum above Kolkata and another house which belongs to Mamata Banerjee. She wears slippers. If she goes to America then also she wears a slipper and a weaver’s saree. She didn’t get married and she doesn’t have a family. She gave her life to people. Delhi government and especially the BJP party is attacking Mamata Banerjee every time. One day they will murder her. If they cannot attack Mamata Banerjee they will set people to murder her. They can do anything. They are playing bad politics. A few days ago, the president of the BJP party came to West Bengal for the meeting. Few people broke their cars. Now they are blaming us. First, investigate but no they are blaming us. I am confident enough that their people only did this thing. They are doing it for publicity.  If my assumption is wrong then I will be leaving politics and if they are wrong then they will get punishment,” said the TMC minister.

This statement by Mukherjee comes after BJP president JP Nadda’s convoy was pelted with stones on Thursday morning allegedly by TMC workers at Sirakol in the Diamond Harbour area of West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. Nadda had gone there to address a rally.
In the attack, National General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya was also injured.

The attack was condemned by Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar who accused the bureaucracy of working as ‘political workers’ for the ruling TMC.

The war of words between the TMC and BJP intensified ahead of the forthcoming state Assembly elections, especially after the attack on Nadda’s convoy.

Many senior BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, have slammed the TMC government for failing to provide security to the BJP president and termed the attack as ‘sponsored violence‘.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has also sought a detailed report from the Bengal government over the alleged “serious security lapses” during the visit of Nadda.
