Ahead of elections, senior BPF leaders join BJP in Assam

Assam, 23rd November: Ahead of the next year’s assembly polls, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal welcomed two prominent BPF leaders, Ex-Rajya Sabha member Biswajit Daimary and Tamulpur MLA Emmanuel Mushahary to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

BJP, Assam Pradesh president Ranjit Kr Dass, National GS Dilip Saikia, State chief spokesperson Ryoam Goswami and Minority welfare board chairman Mominul Awal were present at the program.

Daimary was the BPF’s go-to man and founder general secretary. The BJP had backed his election to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year. He resigned as MP on Saturday.

Daimary and Mushahary joined the saffron party at Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s official residence in Guwahati in the presence of the BJP’s state unit president Ranjit Kumar Dass and national general secretary Dilip Saikia.

After welcoming the duo, Sonowal said both had performed important responsibilities in the BPF.

“They are very experienced and contributed immensely to the Assamese society. Their joining in the BJP has made it certain that the party will capture power in the BTC,” the CM said.

Later, he tweeted, “Glad to welcome senior Bodo community leaders, Shri Biswajit Daimary and Shri Emmanuel Mushahary to the @BJP4India family. Their joining adds more strength to @BJP4Assam”.

Daimary said issues such as underdevelopment, unemployment, etc were afflicting the people in the four districts of Bodoland Territorial Region that are governed by the BTC.

“The people want a change in the BTC. Change is imminent, for the BJP is going to wrest power. Some senior BPF leaders will also join hands with the BJP soon,” Daimary said.

The much-anticipated elections to the 40-seat BTC will be held next month. The elections, first scheduled in April, had to be deferred indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The BPF has ruled the BTC ever since its creation in 2003. The BJP is going all guns blazing this time around to capture power in the council. It ditched ally BPF to forge an alleged tacit alliance with the United People’s Party Liberal which is headed by former student leader Pramod Bodo.

Trade unions call for nationwide strike on Nov.26

New Delhi, 23rd November: A joint committee of 10 central trade unions has given a call for a nationwide general strike on November 26, in protest against the Central government’s policies including new labour and farm laws as well as privatisation of public sector units.

In a press conference, union leaders said workers from all sectors, except those involved in essential services, would take part in the nationwide strike.

In addition to the 10 major trade unions, employees’ organisations in banking, insurance, Railway as well as State and Central government institutions would take part in the strike. Taxi drivers and workers from the unorganised sector too would be participating.

An estimated 1.6 crore workers will be part of the 24-hour strike, which will be from November 25 midnight to November 26 midnight.

The union leaders requested owners of private vehicles to keep off the road, except in cases of emergency, in solidarity with the strike. Considering the upcoming local body elections in Kerala, the strike in the State would be organised without disrupting the activities of the State Election Commission.

The major demands raised by the unions include withdrawal of anti-farmer and anti-labour bills, depositing of ₹7,500 in the accounts of all non-tax paying families, provision of 10 kilograms of food grains every month to families in need, expansion of MGNREGS to provide 200 workdays per year with increased wages and implementation of the scheme in urban areas also, end to privatisation in defence, railways, ports, aviation, power, mining and finance sectors, end to forced lay-off of employees in PSUs and provision of pension for everyone.

The union leaders said that they expected the members of the RSS-affiliated Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) to participate in the strike, even though the union itself was not cooperating with it.

The unions who are part of the strike call include Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), Trade Union Co-ordination Centre (TUCC), Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF) and United Trade Union Congress (UTUC).

Unemployed son killed father to get a job on compassionate ground in Jharkhand

Ranchi, 22nd November: In the pursuit of a job, an unemployed son allegedly killed his father in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district. As per the police, the son killed his 55-year-old father, an employee of Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL), to secure a job in the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) Company.

The deceased Krishna Ram was ahead security guard posted in Central Workshop of CCL at Barkakana in Ramgarh district. He was found dead with throat slit.

Prakash Chandra Mahto, Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), said that the 35-year-old elder son of Ram had killed him at his quarter in Barkakana by slitting his throat.

Police have recovered a small hummer knife used in the crime and the mobile phone of the deceased, he said.

Police claimed that the elder son of Ram confessed during interrogation that he killed his father to get a CCL job on compassionate ground.

As per provisions of CCL, the legal dependent of an employee would be given a job if the employees die during his service tenure, police said.

Mizoram forces still inside Assam territory: Cops

Mizoram, 22nd November: Mizoram security personnel continue to occupy Assam territory at five locations in Cachar and Karimganj districts, said a top police official.

Assam police DIG (Southern Range) Dilip Kumar Dey said the Mizoram personnel continue to station inside Assam’s territory at five locations in the two districts.

The neighboring state had recently decided to pull out its forces from Assam’s territory following the intervention of Satyendra Garg, joint secretary (Northeast) in the home affairs ministry.

As per the report of the forest department, “Unlike the usual incidents of encroachment of forest lands by the general public, the recent encroachment, and land grabbing by Mizo forces appears to be prompted by the Mizoram government. However, this is not the first instance of incursion by Mizoram forces inside the territory of Assam.”

The report said, “The personnel who are illegally occupying forest lands inside the territory of Assam have taken a very aggressive position regarding their claim that the recently occupied lands belong to the territory of Mizoram… this personnel is in no mood to accept the constitutional boundary of Assam & Mizoram or to respect the notification of March 9, 1933, that defines the boundary of the States of Assam and Mizoram.”

The inter-State boundary between Chutobhubirbond and Medleycherra in Karimganj Division and that near Dholai in Cachar Division are straight lines without any natural features such as rivers or streams and the absence of boundary pillars have made these areas vulnerable for a claim by Mizoram.

The recent incidents of land encroachment amount to an act of aggression by the State of Mizoram and such encroachments cannot be tackled in the usual manner by the forest department, the report said, adding that it will require an intensive involvement of both police and military forces to prevent any further incidents of damage to life and property, and incursion into the territory of Assam.

“Due to establishment of IR Battalion camps inside the territory of Assam, Cachar Division stands to lose control over nearly 700 hectares of forest land in the Inner line Reserved Forest area. Until and unless the boundary dispute is conclusively settled, the possibility of future attempts of incursion into Assam by Mizo elements cannot be ruled out… only an intervention by the Government of India can defuse the border tension,” the report added.

Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi’s health remains critical despite minor improvement

Assam, 22nd November: Veteran Congress leader and former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi continues to remain critical despite minor improvement in his health parameters, doctors said on Sunday.

The 86-year-old was admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) on November 2 following breathing problems because of post-Covid-19 complications. Presently, he is on a mechanical ventilator with multi-organ dysfunction (MOD) and is experiencing difficulty in passing urine normally.

“Since Saturday, there has been no deterioration in his health and his laboratory parameters have improved marginally. But his condition is still critical and we will observe him closely for another 48 hours,” Dr. Abhijit Sarma, superintendent of GMCH, said.

“At present, he is passing around 100-120 ml of urine in 24 hours. It would be good if the quantity increases. A large group of specialists from various disciplines are constantly monitoring his health and we are also in touch with experts from AIIMS, Delhi, and they are satisfied with the treatment protocol,” he added.

Sarma informed that Tarun Gogoi is not in a condition to be moved to Delhi or some other place for treatment. The former Assam CM is stated to be oscillating between consciousness and semi-consciousness and opened his eyes briefly for a short time on Sunday morning.

Gogoi was diagnosed with Covid-19 in August and was admitted to GMCH. He was released from the hospital on October 25 but was admitted again on November 2 after he complained of breathlessness.

Assam-Nagaland border row: DC trying to resolve tensions

Assam, 22nd November: Tension is running high along the Assam-Nagaland border as several Assam organizations continued to stage a road blockade on the Mariani (Assam)-Mokokchung (Nagaland) road in Jorhat district since November 15.

Nagaland MLA and advisor Border Affairs, Mhathung Yanthan said that it was a law and order issue, and the deputy commissioners (DCs) of Mokokchung and Jorhat were in contact, trying to manage the situation.

“As of now, the situation is under control,” he said. The legislator added that there was not much the state governments could do as the border issue between the two states was pending in the Supreme Court.

Yanthan also reiterated what Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently reported having said, that once a settlement comes vis-à-vis the Naga political issue, the border matter would also be resolved.

Meanwhile, when contacted, the deputy commissioner (DC) Mokokchung Limawabang Jamir said although no untoward incidents were reported, the public was getting restive due to the economic blockade, and authorities were apprehensive that the situation may flare up if the indefinite blockade continued.

The official informed that he was in touch with his Jorhat counterpart and there will be a DC/SP level meeting on November 25 in Jorhat to discuss the issue and de-escalate the tension.

“I have spoken to DC Jorhat this morning telephonically, requesting her to intervene and convince the blockade enforcers to call off the indefinite blockade. She (DC Jorhat) assured that she will discuss with the organizations,” Jamir said.

The current issue is stated to have escalated after Assam organizations accused Nagaland of setting up a police camp inside Dissoi Valley Reserved Forest and deployed armed Assam police to the area and also erected a temporary camp near the disputed area.

Assam-Nagaland shares a 512-kilometer boundary and a dispute that has been going on for over five decades. Both states have refused to accept recommendations of two commissions set up by the Centre to solve the issue and a suit is pending in Supreme Court on the issue since 1988.

Dilip Ghosh hits out at TMC for politics of ‘insiders and outsiders’

West Bengal, 22nd November: West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh hit out at the ruling TMC for its politics of “insiders and outsiders” and said it was creating suspicion about the state in the mind of fellow countrymen.

“Everyone who is ruling over whom. In Bengal, no one can hold a single public meeting. Police will immediately take action against him. There is no democracy in the state nor any political rights for anyone. The person who snatches others’ rights, cant allege this. Lakhs of Bengal people are staying outside the Bengal but here people from other states are said to be outsiders,” said Dilip Ghosh.

BJP State president went to Surabhi Sadan Goushala in Santoshpur under the North 24 Parganas district on Sunday.

The TMC’s “narrow politics” of asking people to resist outsiders is creating problems for the Bengalis working in other states, he claimed.

Ghosh slams the state government over choosing Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) as the brand ambassador of Bengal rather than Soumitra Chatterjee.

“Shah Rukh Khan is the brand ambassador of Bengal, but the legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee didn’t get the opportunity. Why ‘DIDI’ doesn’t choose our own Bengali actor? Shah Rukh Khan has been chosen by his considering religion? The people of Bengal have already understood the policy of TMC,” said West Bengal BJP president.

BJP state president also claims that he would emulate Gujarat’s growth model in Bengal and no one can stop him.

“No one has the capacity to create a riot in Gujrat. Forget about 2002, how many riots happen here in Bengal in the last 10 years. Bengal will be the next Gujrat, no one can stop me,” Dilip Ghosh added.

Comedian Bharti Singh, husband Harsh sent to 14-day judicial custody by court

Mumbai, 22nd November: A court in Mumbai sent comedian Bharti Singh and her husband Harsh Limbachiyaa to judicial custody till December 4 in connection with the seizure of ganja from their residence.

The couple was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). While Bharti was arrested on Saturday, her husband was placed under arrest on Sunday after being questioned for 12 hours.

They were arrested after the seizure of ganja (cannabis) from her house in suburban Andheri by NCB sleuths. Both Singh and her husband are accused of consuming ganja, an NCB official said.

They have been booked under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Acting on a tip-off, the NCB had on Saturday conducted a search at Singh’s office and residence as part of its probe into the alleged drug use in the entertainment industry and seized 86.5 gm of cannabis during the search.

“Both Bharti Singh and her husband Harsh Limbachiya accepted consumption of ganja,” a statement from the NCB said.

The quantity allegedly seized from Singh’s possession is considered as “small quantity” under the NDPS Act, as against “commercial quantity”, an NCB official said.

Up to 1,000 gm of ganja is considered a small quantity, which attracts a jail term of up to six months and/or a fine of Rs 10,000. Possession of commercial quantity – 20 kg or more – can attract up to 20 years in jail. For the quantity in between, the punishment can be as much as 10 years in jail.

Bharti Singh has appeared in comedy and reality shows on TV and also hosted a few such shows.

The NCB has been probing the alleged drug use in Bollywood after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June this year based on WhatsApp chats involving drugs.

The central agency earlier arrested Rajput’s girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, some employees of the late film star, and a few others under various sections of the NDPS Act. Rhea Chakraborty and some other accused are currently out on bail.
