Oxford coronavirus vaccine to cost INR 1000: Adar Poonawala

New Delhi, 20th November: The coronavirus vaccine maker Serum Institue of India’s CEO Adar Poonawalla has said that the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine should be available for the healthcare workers and elderly people by around February 2021 and by April for the general public and will be priced at the maximum of 1,000 for two necessary doses of the public.

Every Indian will get vaccinated probably by 2024 said Adar Poonawalla at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS), 2020.

“It will probably take two or three years for every Indian to get inoculated, not just because of the supply constraints but because you need the budget, the vaccine, logistics, infrastructure, and then, people should be willing to take the vaccine,” said Poonawalla.

Poonawalla said it will be around USD 5-6 per dose with an MRP of around ₹1,000 for the two necessary doses.

“The government of India will be getting it at a far cheaper price at around USD 3-4 because it will be buying in a large volume and get access to the price that is similar to what COVAX has got. We are still pricing is far cheaper and more affordable than other vaccines we have in the market today,” Adar added.

The Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine is so far proving to work very well even in elderly people, which was a concern earlier.

“It has induced a good T-cell response, which is an indicator for your long-term immunity and antibody response but then again, time will only tell if these vaccines are going to protect you in the long term. Nobody can answer that for any of the vaccines today,” Poonawalla said.

Responding to a question on the safety aspect, he said there have been no major complaints, reactions, or adverse events, adding, “We would need to wait and see. The efficacy and immunogenicity results from the Indian trials will come out in about a month-and-a-half.”

Poonawalla said as soon as the UK authorities and the European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA) approve it for emergency use, it will apply to the drug controller for emergency use authorization in India.

“But that will be for frontline workers, healthcare workers, and elderly people,” he added.

Children would have to wait a little longer till the safety data is out, but the good news is that COVID-19 is not so bad and serious for them, Poonawalla said.

“Unlike measles pneumonia, this disease is seeming to be less of a nuisance for children but then, they can be carriers and can give the infection to others. We want to vaccinate elderly people first. Once we have enough safety data to go in on children, we can recommend it for children too,” he said.

Poonawalla said the coronavirus vaccine by Oxford was affordable, safe, and could be stored at a temperature of two to eight degrees Celsius, which was an ideal temperature for it to be stored in the cold storages of India. He said the SII planned to make about 10 crore doses a month from February.

Bengal govt sets up 1500 artificial ponds for Chhath Puja

West Bengal, 20th November: West Bengal government has set up around 1,500 artificial ponds in and around Kolkata for devotees to perform Chhath Puja on Friday.

The police have put the barricades outside Rabindra Sarobar and Subhas Sarobar – two of the largest lakes in Kolkata – where devotees have been banned from performing the puja.

Police pickets have also been set up in various places to prevent any procession of devotees. Only two persons per family would be allowed to enter a water body to perform the puja, police said.

The Supreme Court had on Thursday ruled that Chhath puja will not be allowed at the Rabindra Sarobar Lake in south Kolkata, which is protected under the national lake conservation plan and is considered the lungs of the densely populated city because of its greenery. A division bench of the Calcutta high court also banned Chhath puja at Subhas Sarobar, a water body of equal importance, located in the north-eastern parts of the city.

“The state government has already set up around 1,500 artificial ponds where devotees can perform the Chhath Puja maintaining Covid-19 norms. Some restrictions like a ban on processions and a cap on the number of devotees who can enter the water bodies have been imposed,” said a state government official.

While green activists in Kolkata welcomed Thursday’s court orders, chief minister Mamata Banerjee appealed to the Hindi-speaking population to observe Chhath puja at home or in their respective neighborhoods, using artificial water tanks created by the government over the past few days.

“We have created artificial water bodies for your convenience. In case you need to visit a riverbank, please follow health protocols related to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic and travel in small groups. Follow court orders and do not form processions,” Banerjee said.

West Bengal: Howrah tops the list of most polluted cities in India

West Bengal, 19th November: Howrah district in West Bengal topped the list of the most polluted cities in India. Its air quality was much worse than Delhi and other cities in the National Capital Region, which have seen an improvement in the situation over the last few days because of rain and wind.

Bhiwadi in Rajasthan was the second-worst polluted the city followed by Kolkata in terms of the Air Quality Index (AQI), a colour-coded tool used to monitor air quality in major Indian cities on a real-time basis.

According to the daily AQI bulletin of the Central Pollution Control Board, the 24-hour average AQI value of Howrah on Wednesday at 4 pm was 285, followed by Bhiwadi (267), Kolkata (266) and Delhi (211).

On the AQI scale, a value of 0-50 is considered good quality air; 51-100 satisfactory; 101-200 moderate; 201-300 poor; 301-400 very poor and 401-500 severe. On May 1, during the pan-India Covid-19 lockdown, both Kolkata and Howrah registered AQI values of less than 50.

As per West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) data, the level of PM10 (coarse pollutants that are seven times finer than the human hair) at Ghusuri in Howrah shot up to 852 micrograms per metre cube around 6 am and to 915 micrograms per metre cube around 10 am on Wednesday. The PM10 should not ideally go above 100 micrograms per metre cube.

Most of the monitoring stations in Kolkata recorded PM10 two times above the safe limits.

The level of PM2.5 (finer particles that can reach up to the lungs) also shot up three to four in some places during the night, primarily because of temperature inversion in winter that traps pollutants close to the surface.
