Assam CM orders CID probe into journalist Parag Bhuyan’s death

Assam, 13th November: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered a probe by the criminal investigation department (CID) of Assam Police into the death of senior journalist, Parag Bhuyan.

Journalist Bhuyan died after being hit by a car on Wednesday night at Kakopathar in Upper Assam, Tinsukia district.

Jagadish Bhuyan was a younger brother of former Assam minister, who is the chief convenor of the newly-formed political party, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

The CID probe order comes after the family members of the deceased, various organizations, political parties, and journalist’s fraternity demanded a proper probe into the incident.

“Taking note of various allegations regarding the death of senior journalist Parag Bhuyan, CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal has directed a CID inquiry into the matter,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said on its Twitter handle.

Bhuyan was admitted to the Assam Medical College Hospital, Dibrugarh in critical condition but he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Tinsukia Police have seized the vehicle that was involved in the incident and arrested the driver, James Mura from the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

Municipal & Panchayat elections to be held in Arunachal Pradesh on December 22

Arunachal, 13th November: The State Election Commission of Arunachal Pradesh has decided to hold the Municipal and Panchayat elections on December 22.

The election was temporarily put on hold in the wake of the COVID19 pandemic which was earlier scheduled to be held in April-May.

The poll will be held for two municipal bodies — Itanagar Municipal Corporation and Pasighat Municipal Board.

The Panchayat election will be held for 25 Zilla Parishad with 241 ZPCs, 2,215 GPs and 8,436 GPCs in Anurachal Pradesh.

The notification on polls will be issued on November 24, while December 2 will be the last date of filing of the nominations.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will be on December 4, while December 7 has been set as the last date for withdrawal of nominations.

The single-phase voting will be held on December 22, and counting will take place on December 26. The state election commission would like to complete the entire election process on or before December 31.

A total of 7, 39,284 electorates will exercise their franchise, while the state election commission will use EVMs for Municipal elections, and ballot papers for the Panchayat elections.

The panchayat elections, along with the polls to the Itanagar and Pasighat municipal councils are due since May 2018.

For the first time in the history of Panchayat elections in Arunachal Pradesh, 27 elections observers will be deployed, one each for each district.

The State Election Commission in coordination with Arunachal Pradesh Home Department has also drafted a detailed security arrangement for the election.

Earthquake of 3.2 magnitude jolts Assam

Assam, 13th November: Mild earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale had hit Assam’s Karbi Anglong in the early hours of Friday, said National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The tremor was recorded at a shallow depth of 11 km on 61 kilometre North of Dimapur, Nagaland.

National Centre for Seismology tweet, ”Earthquake of Magnitude:3.7, Occurred on 13-11-2020, 03:23:49 IST, Lat: 26.45 & Long: 93.61, Depth: 11 Km ,Location: 61km N of Dimapur, Nagaland, India.”

Earlier this month, an earthquake of 4.4 magnitudes on the Richter scale jolted Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya besides neighbouring Bangladesh. The tremor was recorded at a shallow depth of 10 km on latitude 26.69 North and longitude 91.15 degrees East with epicentre at Nongstoin in Meghalaya. Nongstoin is 81 kilometres from Guwahati, the capital city of Assam.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announces Atmanirbhar 3.0

India, 12th November: The Union finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman declared the Atmanirbhar 3.0 scheme on Thursday which aims to come up with new employment opportunities throughout the Covid-19 economic recovery phase.

The new scheme that aims at raising the country’s ailing economy, will be effective from October 1, 2020, and will stay active until June 30, 2021. The particular package has been announced under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Rozgar Yojana.

It will primarily profit those joining employment in Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) registered establishments on monthly wages less than rupees 15,000 per month.

Those who lost their jobs between March 1 and September 30 this year, or are employed on or after October 1 also stand to gain from the scheme.

EPFO registered organizations with up to 1,000 workers, who earn up to rupees 15,000 per month will receive 12 per cent employee’s contribution and 12 per cent employer’s contribution from The central government said the Minister while announcing the scheme in New Delhi.

This amounts to 24 per cent of wages for a two-year period under the scheme. Employers with over 1,000 workers will get employees’ EPF contribution of 12 per cent from the Central government. The subsidy support will be credited into the Aadhar seeded EPFO account (UAN) of an eligible new worker.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also said the Indian economy is improving at a healthy pace. Markets are at a record high and therefore the country’s foreign reserves have reached the U.S. $560 billion.

Cricketer Krunal Pandya stopped at Mumbai Airport for carrying undisclosed gold

Mumbai, 12th November: Mumbai Indians all-rounder Krunal Pandya has been stopped at Mumbai International Airport by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) over suspicion of being in possession of undisclosed gold and other valuables while returning from UAE after IPL 2020.

He was carrying an excess amount of gold and few branded purses along with other items. The DRI has told him to pay the duty.

According to the rules, for Indians flying in from Dubai, male passengers can only import 50,000 INR worth of duty-free gold jewellery whereas the female passengers are allowed to carry double the amount.

Krunal Pandya hit the winning runs in the IPL 2020 final against Delhi Capitals as Mumbai Indians lifted the trophy for the 5th time and second in succession. He has played 71 matches for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

He was the player of the match in the IPL 2017 final and had helped Mumbai Indians defeat Rising Pune Supergiant to claim their third title.

Assam-Nagaland border: Tension continues on the third day

Northeast, 12th November: The halt along the Assam-Nagaland border at Dissoi Valley Reserve Forest under Mariani Range of Jorhat Forest Division continued for the third day on Thursday.

The Nagaland police personnel remained firmly ensconced in a hut erected reportedly on Monday by Nagaland administration within the said Reserve Forest area.

Assam Police also set up a camp on Assam-Nagaland border, to counter any further encroachment of land inside the Assam side of the inter-state border which falls under the Mariani Forest Range of Jorhat district in Assam on Wednesday.

It is reported that the efforts to pursue the Nagaland administration to vacate the area by Nagaland armed policemen and dismantle the structure put up by them continued on Thursday with officials of Jorhat and Mokokchung, Nagaland holding talks at the site over the impasse.

A police force has been deployed by the Jorhat district administration to deal with any kind of situation that may arise due to the ongoing row.

A close watch was kept by the administration with senior district and police officials camping at the area and higher authorities of the State Government being briefed on the situation.

A source said that the structure had been erected on a disputed border area and was in violation of the Supreme Court directive to both sides to maintain the status quo.

As per the information, Assam police personnel had blocked the main entry and exit point to the hillock, where the Nagaland policemen were camping, in order to prevent any possible bid to encroach further.

Actor Asif Basra found hanging at the private complex in Dharamshala

India, 12th November: Bollywood actor Asif Basra has died by suicide at his home in Himachal Pradesh at the age of 53 on Thursday.

A forensic team has reached the spot to examine the cause of the death, the police said, adding an investigation into the matter has been initiated to find out whether it was death by suicide.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta took to Twitter and reacted to the tragic news. He wrote, “Asif Basra! Can’t be true… This is just very, very sad.”

Replying to Hansal Mehta’s tweet, Manoj Bajpayee wrote “What? This is too shocking!! Shot with him just before Lockdown!!! Oh My God!,” he wrote.

Noted Assamese cartoonist Trailokya Dutta passes away

Assam, 12th November: Eminent Assamese painter and cartoonist, Trailokya Dutta has passed away at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati.

90-year-old breathed his last on Wednesday night at the hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for old-age ailments.

Trailokya Dutta artist began his career in 1952 in Guwahati and joined the Assam Tribune Group in 1964.

He gained popularity for his cartoon titled “Kahundi” published in the Dainik Asom. He has been conferred the Bishnu Rabha Award, Sonit Konwar Gajen Award, and the Swabhab Shilpi Amulya Kakati Memorial Award for his immense contributions.

The artist hailed from Ratanpur Village in Barpeta district. He also has to his credit a magazine, Shristi, which is being published since 1975.

Brown sugar seized in Manipur worth Rs 287 cr

Manipur, 12th November: Security forces seized at least 72 kg of brown sugar worth over Rs 287 crore in Manipur’s Thoubal district. The seizure was made during a joint operation by the Assam Rifles and Manipur Police.

Based on the input by the intelligence department, a large consignment of drugs hidden in the area awaiting distribution to various parts of the country, multiple teams were deployed on the intervening night of November 10 and 11.

“In a painstaking search undertaken in difficult terrain in the hours of darkness, three concealed bags containing brown sugar were recovered in the early hours of November 11. The market value of the narcotics recovered is assessed to be over Rs 287 crores,” the statement read.
