Saffron bowl extends to Northeast in India

Sikkim, 11th November: Saffron bowl which was confined to Kashmir yet, may expand to the North-Eastern region of India.

An agency under the Union ministry of science and technology, Northeast Centre for Technology Application and Research (NECTAR), successfully grew the spice at Yangyang in Sikkim with the same quality and higher quantity. Now, it is trying to do the same other parts of hills such as – Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Meghalaya.

An ambitious attempt to grow the much-coveted spice is underway in the Northeast, which enjoys similar climatic conditions as Jammu & Kashmir.

The botany and horticulture department of Sikkim Central University execute tests to understand the soil and actual pH conditions of Yangyang of Sikkim and found it comparable to saffron-growing places of Kashmir.

Saffron seeds were purchased and transported by air from Kashmir to Yangyang by the university. A saffron grower was occupied to look after the complete growing process along with the faculty of the university.

The corms were irrigated during September-October, which ensured timely corm sprouting and good flower yields. Similar climatic and geographical conditions between Pampore, known as the saffron bowl of Kashmir and Yangyang led to its successful sample farming.

As saffron growing was confined to very specific areas in Kashmir, its production remained limited. Though the National Mission on Saffron focused on several measures to improve its farming, the measures were still limited to the specified areas of Kashmir.

OTT platforms, online news portals now under govt regulation

1

India, 11th November: The government has brought OTT platforms, including films and news content, under the ministry of information and broadcasting. The I&B ministry will also regulate online audio-visual programs and current affairs content, according to the amendment order signed by President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday.

Digital content providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar will now be regulated by the Union ministry headed by Prakash Javadekar.

While the Press Council of India (PCI) looks after the print media, the television news channels come under the News Broadcasters Association (NBA). The Advertising Standards Council of India is for regulating the content of the advertisements and Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) monitors films, but there is at present no law or autonomous body governing digital content or Over-the-top (OTT) platforms.

The Supreme Court had last month sought the Centre’s response on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) for regulating OTT platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video by an autonomous body. The PIL stated that digital content on these platforms is made available to the public at large without any filter or screening.

A bench comprising Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian had issued notices to the central government, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) and Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).

None of the OTT/streaming platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Zee5, and Hotstar have signed the self-regulation provided by the I&B ministry since February 2020, the plea had alleged.

Assam – Mizoram border blockade resume after 12 days

Assam, 10th November: Ending a 12-day long blockade of a national highway following a border row between the two states, trucks started transporting from Assam to Mizoram on Monday.

Circle Officer of Sonai in Cachar district of Assam, Sudeep Nath said that 21 trucks carrying vital goods and buses carrying passengers travelled from Lailapur on the border with police escort. He added that vacant trucks that were stuck on the Mizoram side because of the blockade also started getting into Assam from Monday.

The transportation of vehicles resumed after Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla brokered Chief Secretary-level talks between both states on Sunday to finish the impasse.

According to Nath, there has been no untoward incident along the 164-km long border between the 2 states since Saturday and also the situation is slowly returning to normalcy.

Residents on the Assam side had blocked the NH 306 resulting in Mizoram on October 28 seeking removal of Mizoram security forces from the border areas between the two states. Assam had claimed that Mizoram’s security personnel had encroached upon its territory and had even started construction whereas the latter maintained that its personnel was on its territory.

The residents of Lailapur decided to call off the blockade a day after Mizoram agreed to withdraw its forces from the border and deploy three companies of Border Security Force (BSF) on the controversial area.

Tensions between both states flared up last month when some huts on the border were allegedly burnt by miscreants. In the violence that followed many people from both sides were harmed.
