The family members took the baby to the Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) at Dibrugarh however the doctors also declared him brought dead.

Sources said, “A two-month-old baby, Purab Mura, fell sick on Sunday and his family members hurried him to the Muttuck Tea Estate hospital where no doctors or nurses were found. The family members, however, found a compounder within the hospital. She checked up the baby and declared him dead.”

The doctors told us that he had expired 2 hours ago,” said Neha. “We suspect that the compounder of the tea garden hospital had declared my baby dead even while he was alive,” alleged Neha.

The father of the deceased, Papu Mura said, “If my baby had received the proper treatment within the Tea Estate Hospital, he would have remained alive today.” “I have lost my baby because of negligence on the part of the compounder on duty and non-availability of doctors within the hospital,” Mura added.

The members of the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) gheraoed the office of Muttuck Tea Estate in protest against the sheer carelessness in the health issues of the tea garden people.

“Such an incident happened because of negligence on the part of the tea garden hospital authority. If doctors were present at the hospital when the two-month-old baby was taken, the incident wouldn’t have happened,” said an ATTSA member.

“Everybody is fiddling with the health of the tea garden individuals. We demand an investigation into the matter and the resignation of the compounder,” the ATTSA member said.

Oxford dictionary updates its definition of a woman

0

India, 9th November: The Oxford Dictionary has updated its definitions of the word, woman.

Several petitions were filed last year regarding this which influenced the change in the definition of the word. There has been updates made by The Oxford University Press to alter the sexist and offensive synonyms used for women in its dictionary like ‘bitch, bint, wench’ etc.

The updated definition of the dictionary now acknowledges a woman to be a person’s wife, girlfriend or lover.

A media report says that some changes have also been made by Oxford University Press for the definition of man which now includes a similar gender-neutral terminology.

It has also brought changes in other words related to sexual attractiveness and activity.

According to a report that quoted an Oxford University Press spokeswoman as saying that the changes were implemented after an “extensive review of entries related to woman and many other related terms”.

According to The Guardian, the petitions, who launched a campaign in support of their demand to bring in changes in the definition of several words in Oxford Dictionary, argued that the examples the dictionary offered for man were much more exhaustive than those for a woman.

They had a view that the dictionary presented women as subordinate or an irritation.

The campaign was supported by the Women’s Aid and the Women’s Equality Party on the International Women’s Day. The campaigners signed an open letter and demanded OUP to change the sexist definitions. This campaign that was started by Maria Beatrice Giovanardi, reached 30,000 signatures.

The letter said: “Bitch is not a synonym for woman. It is dehumanising to call a woman a bitch. It is but one sad, albeit extremely damaging, an example of everyday sexism. And that should be explained clearly in the dictionary entry used to describe us.”

SER, ER to run 698 suburban trains from Howrah and Sealdah

Bengal, 9th November: Eastern Railway (ER) and Southeastern railway will start running 698 suburban services in the Howrah and Sealdah divisions from Wednesday. 413 trains will run from Sealdah and 202 will run from Howrah division.

This will come as a major relief for those who were apprehensive that the railways would resume suburban trains with only about 10%-15% service. This was what the railways have planned initially but revised its schedule after realizing fewer services may lead to overcrowding and compromise on social distancing norms.

1,351 trains used to run in the Howrah and Sealdah division before the pandemic. Now we are going to run about 47%-48% of these services. No one will be allowed to sit on the middle seats. 80% of the trains will run during office hours.

SP Singh, DRM of Sealdah station said “Instead of 228 trains now, 413 trains will run on the track from Wednesday. It has been decided there will be no changes in the timing of trains. However, a final decision is yet to come. Ticket counters will be open at the station. 80 per cent of trains will run in-office time. RPF and state police personals will be deployed. There will be a possibility of increasing the local trains as per requirement. Thermal scanning will be done by the state government before entering the station. Passengers will be requested to maintain the queue while entering the station.”

A series of protests and blockades of railway tracks by commuters demanding resumption of suburban trains affected the movement of staff special and long-distance trains.

“The number of trains has been increased from 100 to 202, the service will resume from Wednesday. The responsibility of handling the rush will be on the Railway and State Police. UPS counters will be open at Howrah station where passengers can renew their monthly tickets. Passengers have to maintain a queue and also have to follow social distancing. In order to control the crowd, the Railway Protection Force will take charge of the GRP and the state government,” said Ishaq Khan, DRM of Howrah.

Yesterday, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal share the information on a tweet that “The Railways will run 696 suburban services in West Bengal from November 11.”

With lakhs of commuters dependent on local train services, which serve as a lifeline for the suburbs and rural areas for more than 100 km away from Kolkata, there is an apprehension of violation of maintaining COVID safety protocols, especially during the morning and evening peak hours when trains are usually chock-a-block with passengers.
