Tabi-Ripo bereft of communication facilities

Itanagar, September 25: From the month of May to November, Tabi-Ripo village lying in the foothills of lower Siang is cut-off from the rest of the world since the hanging bridge built-in 1980 has become unsafe for use.

In 1947, in order to facilitate the establishment of a government-run school, villagers of Tabi and Ripo moved from their original settlements to a middle ground and named the merged village as “Tabi-Ripo”. Seventy years later, it has over 300 people.

Bereft of any modern facility like road surface and telecommunication, the villagers go to the nearest town, Koyu for administrative purposes which is just 15 kilometres away. Distance is not the challenge, it is the absence of a 100-metre span bridge across the Hinge river that poses the biggest challenge for this sleepy hamlet.

Till a few years back, the hanging bridge at “Pike “ connected Tabi-Ripo with the next village, Saku Kadu en route to Koyu town “The villagers stopped using this bridge since wire-ropes are precariously holding up and can snap anytime,” said a villager. He added that there has been no repair and maintenance of the hanging bridge. ‘Instead of falling off from the height, we rather risk ourselves wading across the Hinge river even in the monsoon,” he said.

Innumerable petitions and proposals for a bridge have been served to various authorities without any success. Ignored by the government and its representatives, the villagers haven’t seen any senior government functionaries in its village for decades.

It is not only the border villages that are facing the connectivity challenges, but even the villages in the foothills, bordering Assam are also majorly challenged.

Grand projects like Trans-Arunachal Highway, East-West Corridor and SARDP-NE remain a farce if a village such as this one is left out of developmental agenda.

Young Arunachali teacher open free library for students

Arunachal, September 27: A young female Arunachali teacher from Itanagar, opened a street library to nurture the habit of reading among students. The library is accessible to the students at absolutely no cost. She gathered books that belong to her and initiated this noble cause.

During Meena, the Arunachali teacher who started the library hails from a small town called Nirujli in Arunachal Pradesh. Her father, the late Ngurang Pinch, thrived despite his poverty. He was an avid reader and an inquisitive learner. He was always reading, learning, inquiring. His resilient attitude made him an excellent orator and social worker. Talking about her father, she said, “I admired his spirit and passion. I wanted to be just like him. He introduced me to non-fiction books during my school days as he was travelling for his political work then. He was an MLA from the Doimukh constituency of the state, and this had introduced him to various books.”

Meena said, “due to lockdown, students are opting for online classes and are always stuck to their smartphones for reading also. This is causing a lot of health hazards, including sleeping disorders. The habit of reading improves grammar and improves the power of imagination, which the younger generation is forgetting.” The library opens throughout the day. It has one rack loaded with books and a couple of wooden benches for the readers. The wooden benches are placed along the roadside. There are autobiographical books, scientific books and books for all age groups. Meena also permits students to borrow books from the library for a maximum of fifteen days.

Books are kept open on the streets, even at night. Regarding the fear of stealing the books, she said that people here are very honest and so far no books have been missing. She also said “I will be glad even if it’s stolen as the book will be of some purpose to the thief. What can a person do with a book other than reading? I believe, thieves don’t read and readers don’t steal.”

The library is under the Arunachali Ngurang Learning Institute and is entirely funded by Ngurang Meena. She wants to extend the library into every village and town of Arunachal Pradesh, which has more wine shops than bookstores. Considering the positive effect of this street library, many volunteers have come ahead to donate books. Some have provided monetary help. Children under ten and working women are the most frequent visitors to the library. One student and a visitor to the library said that the library helps him to read knowledgeable books free of cost and he is happy about it.

Meena said, “We hope our humble initiative will encourage other youth leaders in every district to start one in their own villages to infuse a taste for reading in the people of Arunachal Pradesh.”

In his address, Amit Shah said that “North East, rich in natural beauty, folk culture and art, is fully capable of becoming a major centre of world tourism”.

Shah said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the North East region will emerge as one of the favourite tourism and business destinations of India.

The Union Home Minister also said that the ‘Destination North East-2020‘, which runs till 30 September, aims to introduce various cultures of the country to each other along with the tourist destinations of the North East and through this the whole of India will also get familiar with the vibrant and diverse culture of the North East.

Amit Shah further said that he has seen the tourist places of many states and countries but the beauty of the North East is unparalleled. Northeast is the jewel of India; without it the Indian culture is incomplete.

While inviting the next ceremony to be held in his constituency Gandhinagar, Amit Shah said that, this will make the people of Northeast familiar with the culture of Gujarat and the people of Gujarat will be introduced to the culture of the North-East.

“Peace in the North East is very important for the economic development, promotion of tourism and employment in the region. The Northeast, which was once in the news due to terrorism, blockade, violence but now it is known for development, tourism, organic farming, industry and start-ups. This has been possible due to PM Narendra Modi Ji’s leadership in the last 6 years. A lot of work has been done to establish peace in the Northeast under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Land Border Agreement with Bangladesh, Manipur Blockade, Bodo Agreement and the surrender by 641 cadres of 8 militant groups are among the notable achievements of the Modi government. After becoming Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has visited the North East more than 30 times, most by any Prime Minister since Independence. Development is not possible without proper funds. Earlier, plans were made for the development of North-East but the amount allocated for them was very less. The 14th Finance Commission increased the allocation for the Northeast by 251 per cent to Rs 3,13,375 crore, whereas previous government in 13th Finance Commission had earlier given only Rs 89,168 crore,” Amit Shah said.

He also said that, adopting an all-inclusive and all-encompassing model of development, Modi Government has decided to spend 21 per cent of the budget of the North-East Council on the backward districts, villages and deprived communities.

The Union Home Minister said that the Modi govt has made a huge effort in the direction of linking the North-Eastern states amongst themselves and connecting the region with the rest of India by rail, road & air links. Under this, 6 railway projects worth Rs 15,088 crore have been completed. Also, Rs 553 crore will be spent on the development of airports and about Rs 10,000 crore on 19 road projects of 869 km length.

“During the Corona era, the Modi govt has provided all health facilities to the people of North-East, including medicines and treatment through teleconference by AIIMS doctors. During this time the government provided 7.7 lakh metric tons of food grains to 3.09 crore people. Also, Rs 533 crore under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi and Rs 1,707 crore under Jan Dhan Yojana were directly deposited in the bank accounts of poor people. After Independence, the Northeast used to have 20 per cent share in the GDP of the country but now it has come down drastically,” Shah said.

He called for making the Northeast a tourism and industry hub and an IT and organic farming hub to increase the Northeast’s participation in the country’s GDP by 2024 and make it an important part of the Government of India’s Act East policy.

He also said that “under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, eight states of the North East region are moving forward on the path of development and North-East will soon become a new engine of development for the country“.

Destination North East is a calendar event of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region conceptualized with the objective of taking the North East Region to other parts of the country and bringing them closer together in order to strengthen national integration.

For Destination North East 2020, the theme is “The Emerging Delightful Destinations” which speaks of the tourism destinations emerging stronger and more attractive when the Sector picks up momentum.
