7 nabbed for illegal rhino horn trading in Assam

Assam, September 27: In two different cases 7 poachers accused of illegally trading in rhino horn in Assam have been apprehended by officials of the forest department and Bokakhat Police earlier this week on Thursday.

An investigation has been launched in connection with the case.

Speaking on the arrest, Ramesh Gogoi, the Divisional forest officer, Kaziranga informed, “Following some intelligence inputs, we launched a search operation at Ingley Pathar village in Karbi Anglong bordering Kaziranga and arrested one Rameswar Signar.”

“During interrogation, he confessed that he had received a piece of rhino horn from one Dhanpur Kardong of Borbil Gaon.”

He went on to say, “Then we launched another operation and arrested Dhanpur from his residence. During the operation, we nabbed two other smugglers — Hariram Ingti and Biman Taro. During interrogation, Biman confessed that he handed over the piece of rhino horn to another person in Diphu in Karbi Anglong district to sell it in the clandestine market in Dimapur.”

The Bokakhat police has detained 3 persons on Thursday in connection with illegal rhino horn trading in 2016 namely Tarjen Terang, Rajen Rongfer and Mridul Pegu. The miscreants have been handed over to the forest department. A case has been registered against them.

20 inmates of Khonsa jail in Arunachal test COVID positive

Arunachal, September 26: Twenty inmates of the Khonsa jail in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh, have tested positive for COVID-19. The area has been declared as a containment zone and the DMO has also been instructed to constitute a rapid response team to carry out the contact tracing process. All other inmates and security personnel are also supposed to be tested for the virus.

These twenty cases at Khonsa jail in Arunachal were detected through rapid antigen tests that were carried out on Wednesday and Thursday, earlier this week. The order to declare the area as containment zone came on Friday and will be valid through the next two weeks.

No individual should enter or exit the containment zone until the orders are lifted or the contact tracing is completed. The buffer zone will also be declared once the contact tracing is successfully completed. The area is directed to be barricaded and the entry and exit shall be closely examined by the security personnel.

The coronavirus situation in the state is worsening day by day. The Itanagar police are continuing to impose fines on those who do not wear a mask in public places. A police inspector from the Itanagar Police Station said that, “We are actually creating awareness among the citizens to take precautionary measures to remain safe, so that no one is infected by the coronavirus, for which everyone has to wear a face mask, which is mandatory. Nowadays the infection is rapidly increasing and the time has come for everyone to remain alert and obey the guidelines and advisories issued by administration and the health department.“

So far the state has 8,416 cases out of which 2,331 cases are currently active. 6071 people have recovered from the virus and 14 people have succumbed to it.

Major reshuffle in Manipur cabinet: 6 ministers dropped, 5 inducted

Manipur, September 27: In an important development in the state, the proposal of dropping 6 cabinet ministers have been accepted by Manipur governor Najma Heptulla earlier this week on Thursday. This comes at a time when the state is just ahead of the by-election process.

Just before the dropping of the 6 ministers, 5 new ministers were inducted within the government. 2 of them were former Congress MLAs who have now joined the BJP. While 1 place has been left open.

The Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla administer the oath at Raj Bhawan on Thursday evening & attended by Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren along with some BJP leader.

The five new faces, who were sworn in as ministers include Okram Henry Singh of Wangkhei Assembly Constituency, Oinam Lukhoi Singh of Wangoi Assembly Constituency, Vungzagin Valte of Thanlon Assembly Constituency, Salam Rajen of Lamsang Assembly Constituency, Th Satyabarta Yaiskul Assembly Constituency.

Okram Henry and Oinam Lukhoi defected from the Congress party recently.

On September 23, the state Chief Minister N. Biren Singh proposed dropping of 6 ministers (3 from the BJP, 2 from the NPP and 1 from the LJP) from the Manipur state cabinet. The ministers included Agricultural Minister V Hangkhalian, Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Education & Labour Minister Th Radheshyam, CAF & PD Minister Karam Shyam (LJP), Health Minister L Jayentakumar (NPP) & Hills &bTribals & Affair Minister N Kayisii

Following the proposal, the governor announced acceptance of it in a statement.

Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh had rushed to New Delhi on September 21 with BJP state president, S. Tikendra Singh to meet Union Home Minister, Amit Shah. The two returned to Imphal on Tuesday, accompanied by BJP national vice president, Baijayant Panda. They were sparking speculation of possible state cabinet reshuffle.

The talk of a possible reshuffle flooded social media to the extent of naming a handful of MLAs who were possible contenders for ministerial berth. O. Henry Singh, former MLA of Wangkhei, O. Likhoi, former MLA of Wangoi, Vunzangin Valte, sitting MLA of Thanlon and T.H. Yaiskul, MLA of Satyabrata were among the contenders.

Assam CM distributes appointment letters to newly recruited forest rangers

Guwahati, September 26: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday distributed appointment letters to the newly recruited forest rangers and appointees on compassionate ground in the state Environment and Forest department in a programme held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

Altogether 50 forest rangers and 34 compassionate ground appointees in grade III and IV posts were given appointment letters.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said that the present State government since the time of assuming office has unleashed an uncompromising and relentless fight against corruption.

The government adopted zero tolerance attitude against corruption and carried out massive anti-corruption drives, the Chief Minister said adding that many government officials were arrested and put behind bars on corruption charges in the last four years.

He said that corruption was prevalent in Assam from earlier times and the present government through its anti-corruption campaign tried to weed out this menace from society.

“As a result of government’s anti-corruption drives, people’s confidence in the administrative machinery has increased significantly,” Sonowal said.

The Assam Chief Minister said that the government in the most transparent manner conducted recruitment processes and appointed youths purely on merit and competence.

Sonowal also urged people to stay away from all forms of corrupt practices and help the government in the anti-corruption campaign.

Further, referring to the recent incident of leak of question paper of recruitment examination for Sub-Inspector in Assam Police, the Assam Chief Minister assured that all culprits would be brought to book. He said that investigation to unearth the nexus that conspired to spoil the recruitment process is on and those who were involved would not be allowed to go unpunished.

Moreover, congratulating the new recruitees, Sonowal urged them to work for identifying the true potential and possibilities of the State. He also urged them to work with sincerely to increase forest cover in the State and generate awareness among people living in the border areas of the forest reserves and sanctuaries besides preserving biodiversity.

Sonowal further said that as a result of state government’s committed efforts, forest cover in the State increased by 222 sq. km as stated in the latest report of Forest Survey of India. He also informed that the government in its bid to make Assam a pollution-free State planted 8 crore horticultural and medicinal plants in last four years.

Minister of Environment & Forest Parimal Suklabiadya, Chief Minister’s Media Advisor Hrishikesh Goswami and Principal Secretary of the department Avinash Joshi also spoke on the occasion.

While PCCF AM Singh delivered the welcome speech, the programme was also attended by several senior officers of the department among others.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah to inaugurate “Destination North East-2020” tomorrow

Guwahati, September 26: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is also the chairman of the North Eastern Council will inaugurate “Destination North East-2020” on September 27 through virtual medium.

Destination North East is a calendar event of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region conceptualized with the objective of taking the North East Region to other parts of the country and bringing them closer together in order to strengthen national integration.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh will be the Guest of Honour in the event.

Huge cache of arms-ammunition recovered in Assam Baksa district

Guwahati, September 26: Police had recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition including AK series rifle in Assam Baksa district.

The recovered arms were kept hidden by suspected militants, which were buried underground.

Based on intelligence input, a police team of Assam Baksa district had launched search operation at Sinari Basti area, on the banks of Diring river under Barbari police station in Baksa district under Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) on Friday night and recovered a large number of arms and ammunition from the area.

The police team had recovered two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, 520 rounds live AK ammunition from the area.

A top police official of Baksa district said that, the recovered arms were kept hidden underground and suspected that, it is belonging to NDFB.

The recovery comes less than a week after a large number of arms, ammunition and explosives were recovered from a jungle area near Shantipur under Kachugaon police station in Kokrajhar district.

Flash flood, landslide claimed five more lives in Meghalaya

Shillong, September 26: Flash flood, landslide triggered by heavy rainfall claimed five more lives in Meghalaya.

According to the reports, five people were buried alive under debris in a massive landslide incident that took place at Lower Lumparing area in Meghalaya’s capital city Shillong on Friday.

Several houses were destroyed in the landslide incident.

Following the incident, teams from Fire and Emergency Services, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police had rushed to the area and engaged to rescue the victims.

Two bodies were recovered from the debris and three others are still missing.

Due to incessant rain, it has become more difficulties for the rescue teams to find out other three victims.

The deceased persons were identified as 35-year-old Rejiya Ahmed and 45-year-old Saira Ahmed.

In separate incident, two people killed and one missing as flash flood triggered by incessant rain washed away a vehicle where they had travelled in West Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya.

The driver of the vehicle and a minor girl died in the incident and one person is still missing.

On the other hand, a 12-year-old girl died in separate landslide incident.

On Saturday, two people killed in a massive landslide at police reserve in Shillong.

Meeting on Assam Nagaland border issues held in Dimapur

Guwahati, September 26: A Chief Secretary Level Meeting on Assam Nagaland border issues was held on Friday at Rhododendron Conference Hall, Central Police Officers’ Mess, Police Complex, Chumukedima, Dimapur, Nagaland.

The team from Assam led by Kumar Sanjay Krishna, Chief Secretary, Assam, consisted of Jishnu Barua, Addl. Chief Secretary, Home, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Director General of Police, Mukesh Agarwal, SDGP (Border), other senior officials and the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo.

The team from Nagaland was led by Temjen Toy, Chief Secretary Nagaland and consisted of T. John Longkumer, Director General of Police, Abhijit Sinha, Principal Secretary, Home, Renchamo P. Kikon, ADG (L&O), other senior officials of the State along with the Deputy  Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of Mon, Longleng, Mokokchung, Wokha, Dimapur and  Peren.

In the meeting, several important issues pertaining to the inter-state border areas, the disputed area belt (DAB), and the provisions of the Special Operating Procedure (SOP) for deployment of CAPFs in DAB along the Assam- Nagaland border were discussed.

The Chief Secretary Nagaland and the DGP Nagaland stressed upon the need for maintenance of neutrality by the central forces and other security forces of Assam in the disputed area belt and also for not taking any unilateral action which may create misunderstanding.

The matter regarding the constraints existing in the present SOP from the view point of Nagaland was also brought up and it was impressed for taking suitable corrective measures in this regard.

The Chief Secretary, Assam, the Addl. Chief Secretary, Home, the DGP, Assam and other officials brought up the need for having joint patrolling by the security forces of both the States in the disputed area belt and for holding border meetings on a regular basis between the concerned DCs, SPs, and the border magistrates of the two States so that any issue or situation developing anywhere could be sorted out amicably.

It was also agreed by everyone that there should be regular communication among the senior officials of both the State looking into the border matters.

In the meeting it was felt that SPs of the bordering districts of the two States should further strengthen the system of coordination and cooperation among themselves so that prompt action gets taken against criminal and anti-social activities in the border areas.

It was also decided to encourage frequent sports and cultural exchanges between the people of the two States living in the border areas.

According to a release by Principal Secretary to Government of Nagaland, Home Department, Abhijit Sinha, the meeting concluded with the Chief Secretary, Nagaland expressing his appreciation to Chief Secretary Assam for taking initiative for getting this meeting held after six long years and suggested for having such meetings at regular intervals in the coming years.

Meghalaya Police make third drug bust in September

Meghalaya, September 25: South West Garo Hills police force arrested an individual today and laid hands on 1,923 YaBa, methamphetamine and World-is-Yours tablets weighing approximately 188 grams in Baghmara. They made the arrest, following a tip-off from reliable sources. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Baghmara police state. The matter is being closely investigated.

This comes after 2 other drug bust in the same state in the same month. Meghalaya Police on September 6 busted an inter-state drugs racket and arrested four persons from two different places. During this search, they found one jute bag containing 5 sealed packets of suspected Yaba tablets. The total weight of the tablets was 5.076 kg.

The truck that was carrying the drugs and the criminals, was heading towards Tripura. On the same day, another woman was arrested from 3rd Mile Upper Shillong, with 0.65 grams of powder, which is suspected to be heroin. The police also got hold of her business partner and the person who came to purchase the drug.

In another incident, the Meghalaya Police arrested ten persons, including two women from Manipur and Guwahati for being included in the drug racket. A total of 1,195 grams of heroin was served from their possession.
