Its Vaccino time!

Russia, August 11: Russia claims to have made the first vaccine for COVID19 in the world and the first person to get vaccination is President Vladimir Putin’s daughter

There have been more than 160 vaccine candidates in the world in different stages of production. But the vaccine developed by Moscow’s Gamaleya Institute is launched as the first coronavirus vaccine by the Russian President Vladimir Putin.

While addressing a government meeting, Putin was quoted as saying by AP, “I would like to repeat that it has passed all the necessary tests.” He added, “the most important thing is to ensure full safety of using the vaccine and its efficiency.” One of Putin’s daughters has been among the firsts to receive the vaccine and is reported to be well now.

The Russian President has thanked everyone who has worked on the vaccine’s development. He hopes that the country’s research body will start mass production of the vaccine soon. The move paves way for mass inoculation even as the final stages of clinical trials to test safety and efficiency continue.

However, experts are questioning the fast track approach in the development of it. Alexander Chepurnov, the former head of infectious diseases at Vektor was doubtful about the data provided by the Russian Government. He said, “The danger is there in terms of the possibility of increasing the disease’s severity with the wrong vaccine… with some diseases- and for Coronavirus, this is already known that the infection can intensify with the presence of certain antibodies”.  Antony Fauci, the top US infectious disease specialist also questioned the approach, last week.

The World Health Organization has already sternly advised the Russian authorities to proceed as per the established guidelines to produce a safe and effective vaccine.

Ex-prez Pranab Mukherjee COVID positive; under ventilator support

Ex-prez Pranab Mukherjee COVID positive; under ventilator support post brain clot surgery

India, August 11: Durga Puja has always been a very busy time of the year for the former president of India, Pranab Mukherjee.

This year would have been no different, had it not been for the current situation prevailing in the country and the battle the senior Congress leader is fighting.

However, this was not why he was taken to the hospital. The senior politician had slipped in his bathroom on Sunday developing a blood clot in his brain.

The ex-president of India was admitted at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in a critical condition where he underwent a “life-saving surgery” on Monday.

But according to the hospital authorities, his condition is still very critical and has been kept under ventilator support.

Workup at the hospital revealed a large brain clot for which he underwent emergency life-saving surgery. Post-surgery he continues to remain critical on ventilatory support. He was also found to be COVID-19 positive.”

In his long political career spanning over five decades, as a young Congress leader to Union Finance Minister during the UPA rule to being the President of India, there is one thing that he has never missed- celebrating Durga Puja in his house in his native village.

From executing the ‘Chandi path’ to arranging for all the requisites of the puja, ‘Mukherjee Bari’ in the Mirati village witnesses an exuberant Pranab actively taking part in the festivity.

This year has come as a huge blow for Pranab as well as for his family and well wishes and his fellow village mates from Mirati who are used to celebrating the festival with him.

As Mukherjee, 84 is fighting his own battle, his well-wishers across the nation are praying for his speedy recovery. People in his native village have even gone up to the extent of offering prayers in temples for him. Priests have indulged in chanting a three day long Maha Mrityunjay Mantra to ward off all negative energy from his life, which some are performing special puja in temples. People have assembled in his sister’s house in the Parota village to pay their respect and pray for his quick recuperation.

As a priest Ravi Chattaraj mentioned, “We are doing this special puja in Japeshwar Shiv Mandir in Kirnahar. This is a very important place for Pranab babu and he has always visited the place. We are doing this three-day puja for his health and speedy recovery.“

Jansankhya Samadhan Foundation create awareness for population control bill

North-East India, August 11: The Jansankhya Samadhan Foundation was established in 2017 to create public awareness and movement to press for a strict population control bill that will stipulate, among others, two-child policy for all. India is forecast to be the most populous country in the world within a decade overtaking China.

With declining resources and a global economic slowdown amidst the current COVID-19 pandemic, the nation is hard-pressed to support the current population of 1.37 billion people with the herculean task of alleviating poverty. Resources needed to build world-class infrastructure, a state-of-the-art military, a globally competitive skilled workforce, a modern and accessible healthcare facility etc. gets unduly stressed due to this population explosion.

Instead of returning demographic dividends in the process of nation-building, the growing population is causing decadence with rising social tension in many parts of the country. Social fault-lines are stressed, giving anti-national forces ample opportunities to create havoc.

Jansankhya Samadhan Foundation

The Foundation believes that the only option left before the nation is to bring legislation for a strict two-child policy for all. On July 11, on the occasion of World Population Day, the JSF sent memoranda to the Prime Minister of India from 162 districts through concerned district officials, demanding to enact a strict Population Control Bill. A letter signed by 51 eminent personalities was also sent to the PM on July 17 in this regard. Because of the restrictions imposed due to COVID-19 pandemic, memoranda could not be sent from many districts.

Today, on August 10, 2020, the Assam Chapter of the Jansankhya Samadhan Foundation is launching the campaign in Assam by sending memoranda to the honourable Prime Minister, Home Minister, Sri Giriraj Singh (Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying), Sri J P Nadda (President, Bharatiya Janta Party) and the Law minister demanding to enact and implement a strict Population Control Bill in the next session of parliament.

We want to send a message to Delhi from the Meghdoot Bhavan on the bank of the mighty Brahmaputra, on behalf of the people of North-East India:  Lachit once defeated the vast Moghul army, and today they are going to rule his country by population explosion alone. We want our honourable prime minister to assure us from the remnants of the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day this August 15th.

The Foundation will arrange a series of seminars, public events and awareness campaigns in the coming days to garner public support for the bill.

IIT Madras to start a course on Biomimicry

Chennai, August 10: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is all set to offer a full semester, one-of-its-kind elective course under the interdisciplinary stream on Biomimicry. Biomimicry, as the name suggests is to imitate or look at Nature as a source of inspiration to solve complex problems.

Biomimicry is the intersection of biology and engineering. You do not have to be either a biologist or an engineer to learn biomimicry, all you need is curiosity. Curious enough to look at a lotus leaf and ask the question “How does a lotus leaf remain clean?”

Next, you observe the leaf and learn it has microscopic bumps on its surface that repel water, due to which water droplets roll off the leaf’s surface, along with any dirt particles. You pick up this principle and build a similar structure in clothing. And lo and behold, you could have school uniforms that don’t get dirty. This is just an example of an application. You can have multiple applications from one organism, and there are millions of such organisms that have evolved strategies over billions of years of adaptation to our planet. We can use these blueprints and recipes from nature to design and build solutions for our world.

Biomimicry is not learning about nature but learning from it. The ethos of biomimicry or the guiding principle of biomimicry is that life creates conditions conducive to life. Some examples of modern engineering inspired by biomimicry include – the ‘Shinkansen’ bullet train in Tokyo, Japan, inspired by the kingfisher, the Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe inspired by the termite mound, the town of Kalundborg in Denmark practising industrial symbiosis, wind turbine blade design inspired by the flippers of humpback whales and self-filling water flasks inspired by the Namib Desert beetle.

IIT madras
Nose cone of Shinkansen Bullet Train in Japan is modelled after the beak of Kingfisher to decrease the sound generated by the train.

IIT Madras is among the first institutions in India to offer a full-fledged course on biomimicry. The course will be taught by Prof. MS Sivakumar (Dean of Students, IIT Madras), Shiva Subramaniam (Chief Innovation Officer, Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, IIT Madras), Prof. Satyanarayanan Seshadri (Department of Applied Mechanics) and Prof. Srinivasa Chakravarthy (Department of Biotechnology).

IIT Madras has also created a community of biomimicry enthusiasts who are exploring opportunities in research, entrepreneurship, new products, processes, and systems. The Institute plans to hold a biomimicry challenge to provoke bold, sustainable ideas from young minds. The UN Sustainable Development Goals can provide students with challenges for which they can design solutions using biomimicry.

Biomimicry has immense potential not only in engineering, technology and design, but also in other areas like management, human resources, administration, social sciences and the arts. School children can benefit from learning biomimicry. Biomimicry can lead to not just innovating from nature but also creating a sustainable way of life.
