Gangtok, March 01: Senior Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Party leader K. N. Rai and spokesperson Dr. Shiva Kumar Timshina were reportedly subjected to physical assault by alleged members of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party in Mazi Gaon, Melli around 2:30 pm.
The SDF has vehemently denounced this attack and has called for immediate police intervention to address the situation.
This incident has sparked concerns regarding the state of democracy and the rule of law in Sikkim, prompting calls for urgent action to uphold democratic principles and ensure the safety of political leaders.
Previously, the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front had accused the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha of perpetrating violence against its members.

In a memorandum addressed to the chief election commissioner, former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling urged the Election Commission to impose central rule in the state ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly polls, slated to be held around April-May.
Chamling alleged that SDF workers were being systematically targeted and prevented from reaching out to voters by the SKM, with tacit support from the state government.
He asserted that such actions undermined the democratic process and called for the imposition of the President’s rule to ensure a fair electoral environment.
Furthermore, Chamling urged the Election Commission to intervene directly and instruct the state administration to take decisive measures to uphold the rule of law and prevent further incidents of violence and intimidation.
