Dubai, Dec 02: Sikkim has taken center stage at COP28, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, with its innovative initiative called “Mero Rukh Mero Santati.”

The state is being represented by a distinguished delegation led by Pradeep Kumar, Secretary Forests and Environment, aiming to showcase Sikkim’s dedication to environmental sustainability. The presentation is scheduled to take place at the India Pavilion on December 2, 2023.

COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber officially inaugurated the World Climate Action Summit (WCAS) and unveiled the COP28 finance agenda.

The event witnessed the presence of global leaders such as Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres, King Charles III, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, and President Emmanuel Macron of France. Guterres emphasized the critical need for urgent measures to limit the global temperature increase to below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Several prominent figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris of the USA, are expected to address the United Nations climate summit on December 2, 2023.

During his address at the World Climate Action Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s ongoing efforts to mitigate carbon emissions. Additionally, Modi proposed hosting the COP33 Summit in India in 2028.

PM Modi introduced the “Green Credit” initiative, emphasizing community involvement in creating carbon sinks. This historic event saw the participation of Pradeep Kumar, Secretary Forest and Environment, Government of Sikkim, and Conservator of Forests Karma D. Legshey.
