Students protest outside Assam University; demanding a proper convocation

Assam, Dec 9: Students of Assam University stage a protest outside the university demanding a proper convocation. A few days back, the university has announced that the 18th Convocation will be held on 24th December 2020.

The officials of Assam University had declared that only those students who received the gold medal for Covid-19 would be able to attend the convocation arranged by the university. “#WE WANT # PROPER CONVOCATION” was their statement.

“This is the first day of our protest. We are sitting in front of the gate of Assam University. We have only two demands. The first demand is the convocation needs to be postponed, if not so then the convocation needs to be organized in the next two or three days. If the authority of Assam University is unable to execute either of the two demands then we the students are sitting right here and we will sit till the end until our demand is fulfilled by the officials. No convocation has been held in Assam University since 2018,” states Shubham Chatterjee, a student of Assam University.

The movement that we have kicked off cannot be ceased until the demands of the students are fulfilled. Such was the statement made by the crusaders.

Attending the convocation, wearing the gown, these embody the raw emotions of the students in itself. We support this emotion of the students. We are thankful to all the student organizations who have supported this movement of ours and joined us in this movement. I end by saying one last time that we will sit here and continue with our revolt until our demands are fulfilled,” Chatterjee added.

Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Dilip Nath said that he will discuss the matter.

“I will discuss this issue at the meeting. I cannot comment on this right now until the meeting is carried out. How can I say anything about this right now? We have to discuss this in the meeting and then we can let them know about the final verdict. We will make the decision tomorrow. I requested the students to cease the revolt but did not get the sought-after response from them. Every demand for them, even the one not refunding the money will be considered in the meeting. The teaching and the non-teaching faculty are not available right at this point as they are not supposed to come to the university regularly in this pandemic situation. Tomorrow we will see to it,” said Dilip Kumar Nath, VC of Assam University.

Minister of road transport & Highways and the Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the Government of India, Nitin Gadkari will attend the convocation as the guest of honour.
