Kolkata, Sept 28: Assam Trinamool Congress (TMC) has expressed its intent to contest five parliamentary seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Assam. The party plans to present this proposal to the “INDIA” alliance, a 26-party coalition that includes the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).

Dilip Kumar Sharma, Chairman of the Media Department for the Assam Trinamool Congress, announced the party’s readiness to compete for five out of the 14 parliamentary seats in Assam. He revealed that the state party president, Ripun Bora, has had extensive discussions on this matter with AITC’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, in Kolkata.

Sharma stated, “State party president Ripun Bora discussed the matter with the AITC national general secretary in regard to the party’s seat sharing with the alliance partners of ‘INDIA’ in the Lok Sabha elections, which is just about six months away, and that a proposal from the party to contest in five seats will soon be placed before the 26-party alliance.”

Additionally, organizational matters to strengthen the party’s presence in Assam were discussed between the state party chief and the AITC national general secretary.

Last month, the Assam TMC president had already disclosed the names of the first three constituencies – Darrang, Lakhimpur, and Kokrajhar – from which the party intends to field candidates.

Regarding heritage preservation, Sharma mentioned that the West Bengal government has assured the Assam TMC president that legendary artist and music maestro Bhupen Hazarika’s residence in Tollygunge would be conserved as a “heritage site.” The Assam TMC president, Ripun Bora, had sent multiple letters to the Bengal government requesting the announcement of the music maestro’s residence as a heritage site.

According to party sources, the Assam Trinamool Congress has also submitted a memorandum to the West Bengal government, requesting the development of the historic Madhupur Satra in Cooch Behar.

These political developments reflect the Assam TMC’s ambitions and efforts to expand its influence and engage with its alliance partners as the Lok Sabha elections draw nearer.
