Kolkata, Feb 18: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) issued a sharp response to calls from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders advocating for President’s Rule in West Bengal amidst the unrest in Sandeshkhali.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh challenged the Centre to impose Article 356 in the state, dismissing the statements made by BJP’s Darshana Jardosh and actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty as “baseless.”

Ghosh dared the BJP to enforce Article 356 in West Bengal, asserting that attempts to intimidate with such tactics would not deter them. He urged the BJP to act rather than make empty threats, labeling Mithun Chakraborty’s comments on the Sandeshkhali incidents as groundless.

Sandeshkhali Unrest and Allegations

The situation in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, has been tense for the past ten days. Villagers, predominantly women, took to the streets demanding the arrest of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates, accusing them of land grabbing and various atrocities.

Allegations include seizing farmlands, converting them into fish farms, and subjecting villagers to intimidation and violence. There are also claims of forced attendance at political gatherings and instances of sexual assault.

BJP’s Response and Demand for Action

The BJP formed a committee of Union Ministers and MPs to investigate the alleged incidents of sexual harassment and violence against women in Sandeshkhali.

They accused the TMC of shielding those accused of sexual assault.

BJP leader Darshana Jardosh called for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation and the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, citing her responsibility as a woman leader.

Actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty also criticized the state government’s handling of the unrest, condemning the incidents in Sandeshkhali and urging political parties to prioritize addressing such atrocities over partisan interests.

He emphasized the collective responsibility to raise awareness and ensure people do not suffer such hardships.

The ongoing unrest in Sandeshkhali underscores the political tensions in West Bengal, with the BJP and TMC engaged in a heated exchange over the handling of the situation and calls for central intervention.
