Agartala, Feb 21: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized his government’s commitment to promoting a multilingual education system aligned with the NEP-2020 during an event on Wednesday.

Saha highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting the mother tongue of all ethnic tribes in Tripura as part of the educational initiatives.

Under the new system, students now have the opportunity to learn in eight tribal languages, including Kokborok, across schools in the state.

“The National Education Policy 2020 prioritizes the promotion of a multilingual education system. Following this directive, the BJP-IPFT government is implementing various measures to support this initiative,” Saha stated at the International Mother Language Day event held at Rabindra Bhavan.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to respecting and preserving all languages, announcing the introduction of Kokborok in 1,296 primary schools, 115 secondary schools, and 65 higher secondary schools.

Furthermore, efforts have been made to introduce the Chakma language in 123 schools, along with provisions for studying in languages such as Halam, Kuki, Mizo, Manipuri, and Garo at the school level.

“In Tripura, education in Kokborok and Mizo languages is available up to the 12th standard. Additionally, candidates can opt to write competitive exams like the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) and Tripura Judicial Service in Kokborok,” Saha added.

The day’s events also included a vibrant rally in the city to commemorate the International Mother Language Day, observed annually on February 21 to celebrate linguistic diversity and multilingualism.
