heavy thunderstorms

Weather Update, April 27: The Northeastern region of India is set to witness heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from April 28 to May 1, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and The Weather Channel’s met team.

The rainfall will be of light to moderate intensity, with gusty winds and lightning. The IMD has issued a yellow watch advisory for the region, urging people to be aware of the weather situation.

The rainfall is expected to be heaviest in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya from April 28 to May 1, with similar downpours in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from April 29 to May 1. The Weather Channel’s met team has also indicated that the rainfall will increase in intensity from late weekend to early next week.

The reason behind this weather instability is the combination of a trough over Northeast India and the influx of moist southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal. Due to the wet conditions, the daytime temperatures in the region are expected to be normal to below normal during the forecast period.

The upcoming rain spell could be beneficial for the Northeast region, which has been suffering from below-average monthly rainfall despite persistent rainfall episodes. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam-Meghalaya, and N.M.M.T have suffered from large deficits of 61%, 41%, and 35%, respectively, compared to their long-term averages for the month of April.

While the heavy rainfall could cause some concern, it is essential to note that the Northeast region needs adequate rainfall to sustain its agriculture and biodiversity. The IMD’s advisory is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of people in the region.

It is advisable for people in the Northeastern region to be prepared for the upcoming rainfall and to take necessary precautions to avoid any untoward incidents. The government and local authorities should also be vigilant and take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the public during this period.
