Aizawl, Dec 06: Accepting responsibility for his party’s defeat in the recent Mizoram assembly elections, Zoramthanga, the Mizo National Front (MNF) party president and outgoing Chief Minister, submitted his resignation. Addressing his resignation letter to the party’s vice president and outgoing Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia, Zoramthanga acknowledged his accountability for the electoral setback.

Zoramthanga faced defeat in the Aizawl East 1 constituency, losing to Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) Vice President Lalthansanga. The MNF, under his leadership, secured only 10 out of the 40 Assembly seats in the elections, while ZPM emerged victorious with a landslide, claiming 27 seats.

The ZPM, led by Chief Ministerial candidate Lalduhoma, achieved a significant triumph on December 4th, securing 27 out of the 40 seats in the Mizoram Assembly. Lalduhoma himself won from the Serchhip constituency, defeating his MNF rival by a margin of 2,982 votes. This victory not only signifies a shift in the state’s governance but also marks the end of Zoramthanga’s tenure as Chief Minister, who resigned following the MNF’s defeat.

The election results underscore the growing influence of ZPM, evident in notable victories such as ZPM’s Jeje Lalpekhlua defeating the state Health Minister R Lalthangliana in the South Tuipui seat. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to secure two seats, while the Congress won only one seat in this election.
