The Mizoram elections, held on November 7, were originally scheduled to announce results alongside the four other states, but the Election Commission deferred the counting by a day, considering the special significance of Sunday for the Christian-majority population.

With over 80% of the state’s 8.57 lakh voters participating in the electoral process, a total of 174 candidates, including 18 women, contested in the 40-member state assembly. To form a government in Mizoram, a party needed to cross the halfway mark of 21 seats.

In this election, the key players were the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), and the Congress, each contesting 40 seats. The BJP fielded candidates in 13 seats, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) participated for the first time in Mizoram’s assembly polls with candidates in four seats, and there were 17 Independent candidates.

In the 2018 assembly polls, the MNF won 26 seats, displacing the Congress from power. The ZPM secured victories in eight seats, relegating the Congress to third place with just five seats compared to the 34 it won in 2013. The BJP, making its debut in the Northeastern state, won one seat.
