Agartala, April 18: A devastating thunderstorm wreaked havoc across Tripura just ahead of the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections, causing extensive damage to 291 houses.

The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported that Gomati District bore the brunt of the storm, emerging as the worst affected area in the state.

Out of Tripura’s eight districts, four suffered the impact of the thunderstorm, namely Unakoti, Dhalai, West, and Gomati Districts.

In Unakoti District’s Kumarghat Sub-division, 16 houses sustained partial damage, four were severely affected, and one was destroyed. Similarly, in Kailashahar Sub-division, 90 houses faced partial damage, while 22 were completely damaged.

The Longtharai Valley sub-division in Dhalai reported only one severely damaged house. Moving to Jirania under the West District, seven houses were partially damaged, with three severely affected.

However, the situation was most dire in the Udaipur Sub-division of Gomati District, where 140 houses suffered partial damage, five were severely damaged, and two were destroyed.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Agartala issued a warning in response to the calamity, cautioning residents about thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 km/h at isolated locations throughout Tripura.

Furthermore, heavy rainfall was forecasted in isolated areas of the West, South, and Sepahijala districts of Tripura, compounding the challenges faced by residents and authorities alike.
