Imphal, Aug 08: In a significant development following recent peace talks, 133 individuals from the Meitei community, who had been residing in a relief camp in Manipur’s Jiribam district since June, were safely escorted back to their homes under strict security on August 6.

This move comes after Hmar and Meitei groups from Jiribam met in Assam’s Cachar district last week, agreeing to collaborate towards restoring normalcy and ensuring safe movement for both communities within the district.

As of early August, 768 Meitei people remained in relief camps within Jiribam, while over 1,000 Hmar and Kuki individuals from the same district sought refuge in Assam’s Cachar district.

This return operation marks a crucial step in addressing the displacement crisis. The coordinated effort was led by the Jiribam District Administration, Jiribam District Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Assam Rifles (AR).

Manipur Police announced on X (formerly Twitter), “In a coordinated effort by Jiribam District Administration, Jiribam District Police, CRPF, and AR, Internally Displaced People who were staying at Chingdong Leikai Primary School Relief Camp returned to their homes at Mongbung Meitei Village, Jiribam District. A total of 133 people comprising 26 men, 45 women, and 62 children returned safely to their homes.”

On Tuesday afternoon, district officials confirmed that the 133 residents, including 62 children and 46 women, were relocated from the Chingdong Leikai Primary School relief camp to their homes in Mongbung village, approximately six kilometers from the town center.

Notably, the younger men of the village had stayed behind during the unrest, maintaining a presence in their community.

ISKCON spokesperson Yudhistir Govinda Das confirmed the incident, stating, “One of our ISKCON centers (rented) in Meherpur was burnt, including the deities of Lord Jagannath, Baladev, and Subhadra Devi. Three devotees who lived in the center managed to escape and survive.”

The situation for religious minorities in Bangladesh has grown increasingly precarious in the wake of Hasina’s ouster, with Hindu temples facing attacks amid the ongoing unrest. Kajol Debnath, leader of the Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, said that at least four Hindu temples were targeted on Monday, suffering minor damages.

Mortaza, a notable figure in the Awami League led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, secured his parliamentary seat for a second term earlier this year.

The violent outbreak occurred shortly after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, 76, left the country for safety amid escalating student protests. Hasina’s departure marks the end of her 15-year second term in power, during which she ruled Bangladesh for 20 of the past 30 years, succeeding her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the nation’s founding leader who was assassinated in a 1975 coup.

According to reports from the ‘Dhaka Tribune,’ the District Awami League office was also set on fire, and the residence of its president, Subash Chandra Bose, was vandalized by protesters.

Jubilant mobs stormed the Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister in Dhaka, looting furniture and electronics. Images surfaced of protesters carrying off a red velvet, gilt-edged chair and various vases, highlighting the chaotic scenes.

In a symbolic act of defiance, protesters climbed a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, chiseling away at the head with an axe, underscoring the deepening discontent against the political legacy of the ruling party.

Mashrafe Mortaza, who transitioned from cricket to politics in 2018 by joining the Awami League, has been a significant figure in Bangladeshi sports. During his cricketing career, he captained Bangladesh in 117 matches, taking 390 international wickets, and scoring 2,955 runs across 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is.

In response to the escalating violence, Sheikh Hasina flew to India, landing at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad near New Delhi aboard a Bangladesh Air Force military transport plane.

Guwahati, Aug 03: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has greenlit a transformative infrastructure project for Assam: the development of the 121-kilometer Guwahati Ring Road for Rs. 5,729 crore.

This project will be executed under the Build-Operate-Toll (BOT) model and includes three major components.

Key Features:

  1. Construction of a 4-Lane Northern Guwahati Bypass: A 56-kilometer access-controlled bypass.
  2. Expansion of Existing Infrastructure: Widening the 4-lane bypass on NH 27 to 6 lanes over 8 kilometers.
  3. Upgrades to the Existing Bypass: Improvements to the remaining 58 kilometers of the existing bypass on NH 27.

Additionally, the project will feature a major bridge over the Brahmaputra River, enhancing regional connectivity.

Benefits:

The Aalo fire brigade managed to extinguish the flames. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Opir Paron, Additional Deputy Commissioner Tajing Jonnom, and District Medical Officer Tarik Talom arrived to assess the damage and assist residents.

The fire is believed to have started from unattended pork roasting over an open flame. The lack of fire stations in the Siang district exacerbated the situation, highlighting the urgent need for improved fire-fighting infrastructure.

The Incident

Carini made headlines when, after a 30-second discussion with her coach, she returned to the ring only to refuse to continue fighting against Khelif.

She later described Khelif’s punches as the hardest she had ever faced, with one punch dislodging her chinstrap and causing her shorts to be splattered with blood. In an emotional moment, Carini was seen sitting in the center of the ring in tears after forfeiting the bout.

Khelif’s Background

“For me, it’s not a defeat. For me, when you climb those ropes, you’re already a warrior, you’re already a winner. Regardless of everything, it’s okay, I am fine like this. I didn’t lose tonight … I only did my job as a fighter. I got in the ring and I fought. I didn’t make it. I’m coming out with my head held high and with a broken heart,” Carini said.

Carini’s Perspective

Carini emphasized that her decision was not about giving up but about maturity and instinct. “I’m a mature woman. The ring is my life. I’ve always been very instinctive. And when I feel that something isn’t right, it’s not giving up. It’s having the maturity to stop. It’s having the maturity to say, ‘OK, that’s enough’.”

Carini’s Comments on Khelif

Despite the loss ending her Olympic dream, Carini expressed her opinion on the controversy surrounding Khelif. “I wish her to carry on until the end and that she can be happy. I am someone who doesn’t judge anyone. I am not here to give judgments. For me, they weren’t things that stopped me or blocked me mentally.”

IOC’s Statement

The IOC released a statement on the issue, emphasizing Khelif’s long-term participation in the category. Since the IBA’s recognition was revoked, the IOC has been responsible for decisions regarding global boxing.

However, the eligibility criteria have not been updated. “What I would say is that this involves real people and we are talking about real people’s lives here. They have competed and they continue to compete in the women’s competition. They have lost and they have won against other women over the years,” IOC spokesperson Mark Adams stated.

The IOC has also allowed Taiwan’s two-time world champion Lin Yu-ting to participate in the Paris Olympics after she was previously disqualified for a similar reason.

Carini concluded by reiterating her commitment and determination. “I got in the ring and I said, ‘I’m going to give it all I’ve got, regardless of the person in front of me, who doesn’t interest me at this moment. Imphal, Aug 02: The Co-Ordinating Committee on Disturbance-Free Educational Zone Demand, a joint body of teachers and students’ organizations, strongly condemned today’s police response to a protest rally that severely disrupted local schools.

The incident occurred in Imphal East district, where a large group of internally displaced people staged a protest rally from a relief camp at Ideal Girl College in Akampat.

To curb the rally, security forces fired multiple rounds of tear gas, rubber bullets, and smoke bombs, creating chaos near the school premises.

As classes were in session at nearby institutions, including Eastern Ideal School and S. Chaoba Memorial School, the intense police action caused panic among students. Several students reportedly fainted, and schools had to be abruptly closed.

Parents hurried to collect their children, while teachers took immediate action to ensure students’ safety.

In response, the Co-Ordinating Committee issued a press release denouncing the excessive use of force. They emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that the students were in class when the disturbance began.

The committee highlighted the psychological impact on students, many of whom continue to suffer from trauma associated with the protest and police action.

The police recovered mobile phones, POS machines, laptops, medical test documents, and contract-related papers from the upscale offices set up by the fraudsters in two multi-storey buildings.

At a press conference held at Eco Park police station, Bidhannagar Commissionerate (New Town) Deputy Commissioner Manab Singla, ACP Utsa Srimani, and OC Saikat Banerjee explained the situation.

DC Singla stated that the gang approached job seekers who had posted their resumes on various job portals. Selected individuals were invited to their office in New Town for training, promising them good jobs.

“For the past four months, job seekers from Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand were being scammed. The company collected amounts ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000 from applicants, promising jobs after training,” said Singla.

The accused were also presented at the press conference with their faces covered. One of the accused collapsed from suffocation and was revived with water.

In a related case, the Crime Branch Unit-1 of Thane police arrested a serial fraudster who cheated at least 14 educated unemployed youths of Rs 13.95 lakh in Thane and Palghar districts.

The accused, Lalit Shivnath Shakti, 24, was running an elaborate scam promising jobs in the Indian Railways. Using fake identities, he lured victims with fake job advertisements, appointment letters, and recruitment forms on social media.

The case was registered under multiple sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita at Thane Nagar police station.

Based on credible information, the CID set a trap at Thane railway station where Shakti was expected to meet another potential victim.

Following his arrest, a skilful interrogation revealed his true identity and the extent of his fraudulent activities.
