Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine approved by UK regulator

United Kingdom, Dec 30: Britain has become the first nation to approve the Oxford University-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday.

The coronavirus vaccine designed by scientists at the University of Oxford and produced by AstraZeneca was approved for human use by the UK’s independent regulator.

The United Kingdom government said that it has accepted a recommendation from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) it means the vaccine is both safe and effective.

The company aims to supply millions of doses in the first quarter as part of its deal with the UK government to supply up to 100 million doses in total.

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) was already lining up thousands of medics and volunteers to be ready to deliver jabs across the country.

The authorization recommends two doses administered with an interval of between 4 and 12 weeks. This regimen was shown in clinical trials to be safe and effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19, with no severe cases & no hospitalizations more than 14 days after the second dose.

The vaccine has a tie-up with the Serum Institute of India as well and also being evaluated by the MHRA after the final cut of data was submitted by the government last Monday.

It comes as a senior UK scientist pinpointed the Oxford vaccine as a real gamechanger, which could see the country achieve herd immunity as a result of vaccination against the deadly virus by the summer months of 2021.

“The people that have been vaccinated will be protected within a matter of weeks and that’s very important,” Professor Calum Semple, a respiratory disease expert and member of the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), told to media.

Britain has ordered 100 million doses of the jab, with 40 million expected to be available by the end of March 2021.

AstraZeneca chief Pascal Soriot has stressed that researchers have found the “winning formula” using two doses of the vaccine, ahead of the final results being published.

He has raised hopes that the jabs are more effective and should be effective against a new variant of the coronavirus that is now causing havoc in most parts of the UK.

The incident happened between Jadavpur and Bhawanipur area of Kolkata which is the prime area of the city where police personnel have been deployed especially during the festive season.

A resident of Maheshtala went to attend a birthday party of a female friend in the Jadavpur area. After the party, four friends went on a drive including the two male who have been accused. Once they left the venue, the victim alleges that her male friends who are identified as Rajesh Roy and Sourav Roy, started touching her in an improper manner in front of the female friend.

The 20-year-old victim was seeking help from outside the car and shouting as loud as she can but no one was there on road to listen and help her out. After at least 5.3 km she somehow managed to get down from the car and lodge a police complaint.

Kolkata has reported the first case of mutant Coronavirus strain

Kolkata, Dec 30: Kolkata has reported the first case of mutant Coronavirus strain as one of the returnees from the UK tested positive on Wednesday. He had been isolated since his return. He is presently quarantined at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.

His samples were sent for testing at an NIV lab in Nadia. After genome sequencing, he has tested positive for the new strain. He is one of the two passengers who returned to Kolkata via an Air India flight from the UK last week.

The total number of people testing positive for the new UK variant genome of Sars-CoV-2 virus has reached 20, the Union ministry of health and family welfare announced on Wednesday, based on the results of genome sequencing of positive samples released by the Indian Sars-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (Insacog) labs.

The samples have so far been sequenced in seven of the 10 designated labs across the country—seven samples tested positive in NIMHANS, Bengaluru, two in CCMB, Hyderabad and one in NIV, Pune, eight in NCDC, Delhi, one in IGIB, Delhi and one in NIBG, Kalyani (West Bengal).

The health ministry had announced Tuesday that six UK returnees had tested positive for the variant.

All the infected people are now in isolation, the health ministry said in a statement, adding that their fellow travelers and close contacts are being traced and quarantined. Genome sequencing on other samples is currently going on.

From November 25 to midnight of December 23, 2020, about 33,000 passengers disembarked at various Indian airports from the UK.

All these passengers are being tracked and subjected by states to RT-PCR tests. The designated 10 Insacog labs are NIBMG Kolkata, ILS Bhubaneswar, NIV Pune, CCS Pune, CCMB Hyderabad, CDFD Hyderabad, InSTEM Bengaluru, NIMHANS Bengaluru, IGIB Delhi, NCDC Delhi.

The presence of the new Coronavirus strain has already been reported by Denmark, Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Japan, Lebanon, and Singapore, so far.

First detected in London and Kent in mid-September, the variant was identified by UK authorities as a matter of concern on December 14. They later disclosed evidence that it appeared to be more transmissible, and was behind a spike in cases in the country’s capital as well as its south-east.

The variant has 23 changes in its genome, eight of which appear to influence the spike protein that the pathogen uses to latch on to host cells. Some of the other changes could make it more adept at infecting susceptible cells and possibly even evade some immune response, although detailed studies are underway.

In a preliminary assessment released late on Monday, UK scientists estimated that the new variant did not lead to more deaths or hospitalizations but caused noticeably more secondary infections than the older variant.

Amartya Sen has been married 3 times in 3 different religion: Dilip Ghosh

West Bengal, Dec 29: BJP Bengal President and MP Dilip Ghosh lashes out at Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen over his marriage.

“I don’t want to comment anything on his (Amartya Sen) personal life. He has been married 3 times in 3 different religions. He has no moral right to comment on such things. He has eloped from this country, he does not care about the people of this country. When the public was in trouble he was not with them, be it during Amphan or this pandemic. We not here to listen to him, whoever has, drowned,” said Dilip Ghosh.

This came after a day when Amartya Sen has written a letter referring to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and thanked her for supporting people like him who are under attack.

“I do not know who is standing by whom. Due to political compulsion, they are trying to survive with each other. This would not happen anymore. Those who fooled the citizens of West Bengal provided them fictitious information and did not contribute a single penny are not getting revealed. They are in deep worry now and thus are coming up with other issues just to save themselves,” Ghosh added.

In a short email, Sen wrote, “I am very happy indeed to get your supportive letter. I am not only most touched, but also very reassured that despite the busy life you have to lead, you can find time for reassuring people under attack. Your strong voice, along with your full understanding of what is going on, is, for me, a tremendous source of strength.”

On Friday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Sen and slammed the BJP for “leveling baseless allegations” against him. “We all salute Amartya Sen. Just because he isn’t inclined towards BJP’s ideology, they are leveling such allegations against him,” she had said.

“I say that you have given accounts on what have you given in response to all that the people of Bengal has given to you? We have the right to ask for that account which they are not being able to provide,” Ghosh further added.

Earlier this week, Visva-Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty in a letter to the state government had named Sen among those who have “illegally occupied plots on the campus” – a charge denied by the Nobel laureate who has said that the land in question was registered in records on a long-term lease.
