India nod to mRNA vaccine :

India’s first indigenous mRNA vaccine candidate developed by Pune-based Genova has been given approval from drug regulators to initiate Phase 1/2 human clinical trials.

The mRNA vaccines do not use the conventional model to produce an immune response. Instead, they carry molecular instructions to make the protein in the body through a synthetic RNA of the virus.

The host body uses this to produce the viral protein that is recognized, thereby, making the body mount an immune response against the disease.

According to the Department of Biotechnology, the mRNA-based vaccines are scientifically the ideal choice to address a pandemic because of their rapid developmental timeline.

Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has demanded the State Government for immediate re-appointment of the 10,323 terminated teachers as the protest has entered its fifth day on Friday.

The Tripura High Court had ordered the termination of services of 10,323 Government teachers, citing ‘discrepancies’ in the selection process. Later, the Supreme Court of India upheld the decision of the Tripura High Court.

Meanwhile, the terminated teachers are continuing with their indefinite sit-in demonstration at Paradise Chowmuhani in Agartala.

The agitating teachers rejected the offer made by Chief Minister Biplab Deb to compete for the vacant 9,000 posts in various Government departments notified by the State Government.

IMA Members and doctors stage protest against ‘Mixopathy’ in Guwahati

Guwahati, Dec 11: Indian Medical Association (IMA) members and doctors staged a protest against the Centre’s law enabling Ayurvedic doctors to practice modern medicine and surgical procedures in Guwahati.

“They are mixing the modern medical system with the traditional one. It takes eight to 10 years to become a surgeon but the Center is allowing Ayurvedic practitioners to perform it with only three years of training. It is a sort of experiment on people,” said Satyajeet IMA Assam State Chief.

“The Government of India has to withdraw the notification. We are protesting against mixopathy,” Bora added.

IMA has called for a nationwide no-demonstration strike on Friday. The medical body is demanding the withdrawal of the notification allowing Ayurveda postgraduates to perform modern medicine surgery.

The nationwide doctors’ strike will disrupt medical services across the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The medical services in Assam will also be interrupted except for emergency services and COVID care services.

Dr Rajan Sharma, national president, IMA, said allowing Ayurveda postgraduates to perform surgery is a ‘blatant attempt‘ to ‘corrupt‘ the healthcare system of the country.

“It takes years and years to become a doctor and with ‘mixopaths‘ what are we heading for? It’s a failure when nations compromise on health,” said Dr Sharma.

IMA reiterates that it has taken 200 years of medical research to reach modern medical capabilities, where modern medicines are controlled and double controlled and are research-oriented.

Doctors across the country are observing the strike by wearing a black ribbon as a mark of protest while on duty.

Meanwhile, IMA protest calls for the withdrawal of all non-essential non-COVID services between 6 am and 6 pm today and the agitation is likely to intensify in the coming weeks.
