Gangtok, Sep 28: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts in Sikkim, forecasting heavy rainfall and snowfall in the region.

According to the latest weather warning from the Meteorological Centre in Gangtok, areas including Mangan, Gyalshing, Pakyong, Soreng, Namchi, and Gangtok are expected to face intense weather conditions, with snow likely in higher altitudes.

The advisory, issued at 00:02 IST, is in effect for three hours, during which the public has been urged to stay vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.

Residents are advised to avoid landslide-prone areas as continuous rainfall could trigger ground instability and dangerous conditions.

Guwahati, Sep 27: On September 27, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned Karnataka Congress leader Priyank Kharge’s remarks about Assam’s suitability for semiconductor industry investment.

Sarma asserted, “Once again, Congress shows its true colors by opposing Assam’s development.”

Kharge, the son of the Congress national president, claimed that Assam lacks the necessary qualifications to host a semiconductor industry.

In response, Sarma urged Congress leaders in Assam to reject such “divisive thinking” and support the state’s growth and progress. He emphasized the need for collaboration and unity among political leaders to enhance Assam’s economic prospects, especially in high-tech sectors like semiconductors.

“All political leaders must work together for the betterment of Assam, rather than undermining its potential,” he stated.

Additionally, Assam BJP Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah reacted to Kharge’s comments, accusing the Congress of frustration and jealousy over Assam’s development.

“Look at the frustration of Congress that Assam is finally on the development path,” Mallabaruah remarked.

He criticized prominent Congress leaders for “abusing Assam” amid significant investments in semiconductor manufacturing and assured that the BJP government would not allow anti-Assam sentiments to prevail.

Kharge had previously posted on X (formerly Twitter), questioning the viability of the semiconductor industry in Assam.

He noted that while five semiconductor manufacturing units are being established—four in Gujarat and one in Assam—the state lacks the necessary ecosystem for skills, research, and innovation.

“Seventy percent of chip designing talent lies in Karnataka. I don’t understand why the government wants to push to another state by using political clout. That is unfair,” Kharge wrote.

Itanagar, Sep 27: Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj expressed his frustration after being denied entry into Arunachal Pradesh at Donyi Polo Airport for his “Gau Dhwaj Yatra.”

In a video statement, the spiritual leader emphasized his dedication to cow protection and called for dialogue with the people of the state.

Swami Avimukteshwaranand stated, “If I enter Arunachal, what will you do? Will you kill me? I am ready to die to protect the cow, our mother.” He added that arresting him would tarnish the reputation of Arunachal Pradesh, a state he considers crucial to India’s rise. “I don’t want Arunachal to have a bad name,” he remarked.

The Swami invited local students and citizens for an open discussion, saying, “Come meet me, talk to me, I will come again if you say so.” He stressed that communication could bridge differences, affirming, “I am not your enemy.”

The denial followed protests by the Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (APSU) opposing Swami’s visit, which sought to raise awareness about cow protection and highlight the harm of cow slaughter.

Upon arrival, police informed him that his presence might provoke unrest. He questioned why, as an Indian citizen, he was being barred from entering the state, insisting he had never spoken against its people.

Swami Avimukteshwaranand criticized the students for protesting due to dietary preferences, noting, “I am being stopped because I see the cow as a mother, while some protestors see it as food.” He urged students to focus on education rather than opposing his message.

He recounted receiving a letter warning that his visit could lead to protests and damage at the airport. “This is illegal; students should not act this way,” he said.

Despite the tensions, the Swami emphasized the importance of unity between India and Arunachal Pradesh, calling for peaceful dialogue. “India’s strength is Arunachal Pradesh, and Arunachal’s strength is India. Let’s talk and find solutions together,” he urged.

However, he expressed disappointment that student leaders did not step forward to facilitate discussions. “Where are the leaders? I’m here, ready to talk, but no one is available,” he noted.

Swami Avimukteshwaranand remains committed to promoting cow conservation and fostering mutual understanding with Arunachal’s youth.

“I have come with a small flag that reads ‘Gaumata Rashtramata.’ To make India one, we must communicate,” he concluded, leaving the door open for future conversations.

Guwahati, Sep 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reached out to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in a letter, urging him to intervene and resume the stalled construction of the Majuli-Jorhat bridge, which has been on hold since September 5, 2024.

In his correspondence, Sarma expressed his concerns regarding the lack of accountability from the contractor, UP State Bridge Corporation Limited, warning that the ongoing delay could jeopardize the entire project.

He emphasized the significance of the two-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra River, which is essential for enhancing connectivity and fostering economic development in the region.

The project, valued at approximately ₹650 crore, was awarded in August 2021 under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, with a target completion date set for December 2025.

Sarma noted that the current dry season is crucial for construction activities, and any further delays could lead to substantial time and cost overruns.

His remarks came during a Mega Solidarity Rally held to support minority communities in Bangladesh.

Speaking at the event, Debbarma emphasized his connection to the region, stating, “I am here not just as the Tipra Motha founder, but as a member of the Maharaja’s family, whose ancestors once ruled areas in Bangladesh like Brahmanbaria, Khagrachari, Comilla, and Chottogram. It pains me to witness the attacks on our people, who were part of Tripura 70 years ago. Their temples are being vandalized, churches attacked and lives taken. This violence is not reflective of Tripura’s culture, nor is it acceptable in Bangladesh. The Maharajas of Tripura fostered a culture that welcomed mandirs, masjids, and land for Christians.”

Debbarma highlighted the inclusive traditions of Tripura, which celebrate diverse faiths, stating, “Today, Muslims protect our Hindu deities, and namaz is still performed at Raj Baari. This is the essence of our culture and that of India. However, it seems the people of Bangladesh do not honor this mutual respect. Without Tripura, Bangladesh would not exist, nor would the Mukti Bahini. Yet, now Bangladesh is raising slogans against India, the nation that once supported them. They claim they will seize the Northeast and Tripura. We, the Muslims of India, will teach our counterparts in Bangladesh what true Islam is. We must unite to urge the Indian government to confront these issues and hold Bangladesh accountable.”

He also reflected on the historical friendship between India and Bangladesh, noting that Sheikh Hasina and her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, were once allies of India.

Debbarma concluded with a stark warning: “If the people of Bangladesh believe they can challenge us, they must remember that India created Bangladesh by dividing Pakistan, and now India has the power to divide Bangladesh again. We will not remain silent if our minority communities in Bangladesh are harmed. India belongs to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and Sam Manekshaw.”

During his visit to the Khundrakpam constituency, he stated, “Singh’s claim has caused unrest in the peripheral areas of Imphal Valley. He must clarify the basis of his assertions and outline the measures in place to counter the militants’ entry. Villagers should not be left to live in fear.”

He urged the government to take swift action, emphasizing that the responsibility for protecting the villages lies with the authorities, not the residents.

Itanagar, Sept 25: The Deputy Commissioner of Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, has issued an executive order to improve hygiene standards in meat shops and curb the spread of zoonotic diseases in the capital.

Dated September 24, the order follows reports of butchers and meat vendors selling livestock and poultry in unhygienic roadside stalls and markets, which pose serious public health risks. Diseases like anthrax, leptospirosis, cysticercosis, and brucellosis are potential threats from such practices.

To address this, the District Magistrate has mandated strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all meat vendors in Itanagar, including:

  1. Antemortem and post-mortem inspections by registered veterinarians.
  2. Deep refrigerators to preserve meat hygiene and texture.
  3. Access to a proper water supply at all meat vending locations.
  4. A complete ban on selling meat in open roadside stalls.

The order also prohibits roadside slaughter of animals and calls for adequate drainage systems in meat shops. Additionally, vendors must obtain and display valid Trading Licenses.

Gangtok, Sept 25: On September 23, Gangtok experienced a record-breaking temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius, marking the hottest September day in Sikkim since 1969, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Gopinath Raha, head of IMD Gangtok, stated, “This month, particularly in the last week, temperatures have surged by 3-6 degrees Celsius above the normal for September. From our data spanning 1969 to 2024, this is officially the hottest September on record in Sikkim, with an average monthly temperature of 24 degrees Celsius, an unprecedented figure.”

Throughout the month, Gangtok has faced 11 days with temperatures surpassing 25 degrees Celsius.

From September 6 to 13, and again from September 18 to 23, temperatures remained consistently above 24 degrees.

In Tadong, located 1,500 feet downhill from Gangtok, temperatures soared to 33.1 degrees Celsius on September 21, the highest September reading recorded there. This heatwave has also extended to Darjeeling, which hit 28.2 degrees Celsius on the same day.

Despite the extreme heat, Raha predicts some relief starting September 24, with temperatures expected to cool down due to a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal, possibly bringing rain and thunderstorms.

Sikkim’s monsoon season, typically lasting from late May to September 30, has seen irregular patterns in recent years.

While June witnessed normal rainfall, July recorded an 18% increase, and the first two months of the monsoon saw a 66% surge in rains.

However, there has been a deficit since July, with only a 9% increase over normal levels.

Additionally, Sikkim’s weather is further complicated by non-monsoonal rainfall, often influenced by western disturbances.

These disturbances, however, are shifting northward, adding further complexity to the region’s climate patterns.
