The discussions resulted in a joint statement emphasizing cooperation in key areas such as defense, economy, clean energy, global health, and development.

One of the major highlights was the agreement to establish a new semiconductor fabrication plant in Kolkata, backed by the India Semiconductor Mission and a strategic partnership involving Bharat Semi, 3rdiTech, and the US Space Force.

According to the White House, “President Biden and Prime Minister Modi celebrated a landmark arrangement to create a semiconductor plant focused on advanced sensing, communication, and power electronics, crucial for national security, next-gen telecommunications, and green energy applications.”

Additionally, Biden expressed enthusiasm over India’s procurement of 31 General Atomics MQ-9B Sky Guardian and Sea Guardian drones, which are expected to enhance India’s surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. Strengthening Economic Ties

The leaders also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India’s Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and the US Small Business Administration, aimed at fostering collaboration between small and medium-sized enterprises in both countries. The MoU includes initiatives such as capacity-building workshops focusing on trade, export finance, technology, and the green economy.

During the meeting, they launched the US-India Global Digital Development Partnership, which seeks to unite private sector companies and resources from both nations to promote responsible use of emerging digital technologies across Asia and Africa.

Indo-Pacific Security Initiatives

A new Maritime Initiative for Training in the Indo-Pacific (MAITRI) was announced, designed to enhance maritime security in the region and enforce laws to deter unlawful activities. India is set to host the inaugural MAITRI workshop in 2025.

In the men’s 21K elite category, Akshay Kumar claimed victory with a remarkable time of 1:03:00, followed closely by Lovepreet Singh (1:03:19) and Kailash Chaudhary (1:05:00).

Ankita Ben Gavit won the women’s 21K elite race, finishing in 1:14:04, with Tamsi Singh trailing just eight seconds behind. Nisha secured third place with a time of 1:21:59.

Local talent also shone in the 21K category. Kresstarjune Pathaw led the Meghalayan men’s field, finishing in 1:05:21, while Emphius Nongrum (1:09:26) and Teiboklang Biam (1:09:54) followed.

The released individuals, identified as Jivan Basumatary, Sonaram Mochahary, Sonam Magar, Bimal Basumatary, Dilip Basumatary, and Fakhon Narzary, were detained as part of a crackdown on insurgent activities within Bhutanese territory.

Their release marks a significant development in the ongoing peace process within the region.

Kolkata, Sep 20: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the Jharkhand government on Thursday, blaming it for the worsening flood situation in Bengal, which she attributed to the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) releasing water to protect Jharkhand.

In response, she ordered the closure of the interstate border for three days.

Mamata accused the DVC of creating “man-made” floods and threatened to cut ties with the corporation.

She highlighted the failure to conduct necessary dredging at the DVC dams, which has diminished their water storage capacity by 36 percent, leading to significant flooding in several districts of West Bengal.

To assess the flood situation, she visited Panskura in Purba Medinipur and Udaynarayanpur in Howrah.

“This is not just rainwater; it’s water released by the DVC. This is a man-made flood, and it’s unfortunate. The Centre needs to address the dredging issue at the DVC dams. We will initiate a major movement against this,” she stated.

Mamata alleged a “well-planned conspiracy” aimed at putting Bengal in this predicament, emphasizing that such floods have not occurred before.

She mentioned her direct communication with the DVC chairman, urging him to limit water releases.

While acknowledging rainfall over the past few days, she insisted that the state has the infrastructure to manage such conditions without the added stress from Jharkhand’s water releases.

Significance

The Tirupati laddu, also known as Srivari laddu, has a rich history dating back to the 1920s. The TTD holds a geographical indication tag for the laddu, preventing anyone else from selling this unique sweet and granting them patent rights.

The laddu is significant as a sacred offering to Lord Venkateswara, a form of Lord Vishnu, who is revered for helping humanity overcome challenges.

The small laddus, distributed free of charge to devotees, are the ones offered in the temple. Medium laddus are priced at ₹50 each, while large ones cost ₹200.

Controversy

The controversy erupted when the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) reported that a laboratory in Gujarat detected “beef tallow,” “lard,” and fish oil in the ingredients of the Tirupati laddu.

This revelation has caused significant outrage among devotees, as the consumption of beef and other meats is contrary to Hindu beliefs.

The situation has sparked a political blame game, with the TDP accusing the previous YSR government of initiating these practices.

He described the government’s decision to halt fencing in these areas as unfortunate, especially since these regions are key entry points for illegal immigrants.

Dhiren also expressed concerns about the Centre’s intentions, suggesting that the delay in completing the border fencing might be part of a larger hidden agenda to keep Manipur in a state of unrest. He urged the government to avoid actions that could escalate the ongoing regional crisis.

Recalling statements made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has frequently mentioned illegal immigration and drug trafficking as major factors contributing to the unrest in Manipur, Dhiren criticized the decision to prioritize fencing in other areas while neglecting the Kuki-dominated regions.

He argued that this move could further worsen the population imbalance in the state.

In response, UCM has vowed to pressure both the Centre and the Manipur state government to ensure the border fencing work is completed swiftly, especially in the high-risk Kuki-dominated areas.
