Arunachal Pradesh: Kashmiri migrants face hardship stuck in Arunachal

May 28, 2020: Over 300 Kashmiri migrants, traders and labourers stranded all over Arunachal Pradesh are facing hardship due to the enforcement of COVID-19 lockdown, appeal to the government of Jammu and Kashmir to make arrangements for them to return to their state.

Unable to get any benefits from the J&K government the labourers have decided to fall back on the Arunachal government for help and support.

Most of them hailing from the Kupwara and Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir complain that they are living in tents which does not have any electricity supply in this hot summer season in Holongi, which is a border town between Arunachal and Assam.

They have complained that they are not being paid their salaries which was agreed upon through an agreement by a Kashmiri contractor tied up with Starlite company, a subsidiary of Tata. As a result, they are running out of money.

They have also claimed that they are struggling to arrange food.

However, Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu, while addressing a press conference a few days back had a different say on the issue altogether.

He said, “We haven’t yet received any request from Kashmiris stranded here in Arunachal. But we are still providing for those Kashmiris stranded here in the state. If J&K government coordinates with us then we will arrange transportation facilities for them.”

These Kashmiri citizens had booked their return tickets and their train was scheduled in the last week of March. But, they couldn’t return as the lockdown was announced.

“We have tried with the best of our efforts to get in touch with our local leaders in J&K through mobile and also tried to contact the DC concerned there at Ramban but it has proved to be worthless and useless. Now we are left with no other option but to approach the Arunachal government to contact the J&K government for our returning to back home.” Said one of the labourers.

Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar talking to media on May 19th told that “I was unaware of their existence. Arunachal Government will coordinate with our counterparts in the J&K government to arrange their travelling back home. If we get a formal request, we can intervene and get them back the money pending. “

Assam: Chief Minister Sonowal inspects quarantine camps

May 27, 2020: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inspects quarantine camps on Sunday, which is set up at the Murkong Selek College, Jonai in Dhemaji district, and Sivasagar Primary Health Centre in Demow, Sivasagar district.

The Chief Minister presided over a meeting with senior officials of the Dhemaji district administration along with various other departments at Jonai and reviewed arrangements for quarantine facilities and COVID-19 screenings.

“We will fight against coronavirus together… I appeal to everyone including those in home quarantine or institutional quarantine to obey the rules and regulations laid down by the state. If rules are not maintained, it’ll bring down a calamity on everyone.” he said. He also emphasized on the importance of social distancing, cleanliness, usage of masks and other health equipment.

He tweeted sharing his experience of the visit, “With the spike in #COVID19 cases, setting up of more quarantine centers has become the need of the hour.

Today, as I visited the quarantine camp at Murkong Selek College, Jonai to assess facilities, asked the officials and staff to provide the best services to the people.”

On his way back from Jonai he stopped to interact with workers in a manufacturing unit.

“On my way back to Dibrugarh from Jonai, visited a Paver Block manufacturing unit and interacted with the workers.

As Assam fights a resolute war against #COVID19, I was inspired by the motivation of the workers and urged them to carry forward maintaining social distancing.”, he tweeted.

About his visit to Sivasagar Primary Health Centre, he informed that the government has stepped up tests and quarantine facilities to ensure the breakage of the transmission chain.

 “Our Govt has stepped up testing, tracing and quarantine processes to break the #COVID19 transmission chain.

Visited a quarantine facility at Demow, Sivasagar district, and took stock of arrangements made by the authorities.” he tweeted.

He also took to Twitter to thank the media for their efforts and cooperation.

124 people who stranded in Bangladesh due to lockdown finally return to India:

Guwahati, May 28: As many as 124 people from Assam, Manipur and West Bengal who were stranded in Bangladesh due to the COVID-19 lockdown, finally return to India.

The Indian people stuck in Bangladesh in past two months returned to India through the Sutarkandi International Border point in Assam’s Karimganj district on Thursday.

Most of the returnees are students, tourists and pilgrims.

On the other hand, over 80 people from Bangladesh also stuck in India due to lockdown have returned to Bangladesh.

Karimganj District Development Commissioner Ranjit Kumar Laskar said that, due to lockdown many people from both countries were stuck.

“Today, around 124 people from India who were stuck in Bangladesh have returned to India. Following the directive of the Union government, the international border has been opened for two hours for the stranded people. Around 80 people from Bangladesh also returned to their homes,” Ranjit Kumar Laskar said.

On the other hand, the people who were stuck due to lockdown are now very happy for the government’s initiative.

A medical student hailing from Kolkata said that she was stuck in Bangladesh for the last two months due to lockdown.

“I am a medical student and I was stuck in Bangladesh due to lockdown. Now I am very happy that I will reach my home,” the medical student said.

One tourist from Assam said that, he went to Bangladesh as a tourist, but got stuck there due to lockdown.

“I am now very happy. Bangladesh is also well and I had not faced any problem,” the tourist said.

On the other hand, a lady hailing from Sylhet in Bangladesh stuck at Silchar in Assam’s Cachar district with her family due to lockdown said that they are now happy that, they will go to their homes.

Assam reports 15 new COVID-19 cases, state tally rises to 798:

Guwahati, May 28: The surge in the COVID-19 positive cases in Assam has been continued as the state on Thursday has registered 15 more positive cases for the novel Coronavirus, the state tally has now increased to 798.

The new 15 cases have been reported from Kamrup (Metro), Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur districts.

Confirming the report, Assam Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted – “15 new cases of #COVID19+ reported. 11 Kamrup Metro, 3 Dibrugarh, 1 Lakhimpur. Total cases 798.”

The state has registered 406 positive cases for COVID-19 in last 72 hours.

On Wednesday, 101 positive cases for the new virus were detected in the state.

On the other hand, 25 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals on Wednesday evening.

The state Health minister said that, out of them, 22 patients were discharged from Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital in Guwahati, two from Silchar Medical College Hospital and one from Jorhat Medical College Hospital.

The state has now 704 active positive cases for COVID-19.

On the other hand, Nagaland on Thursday has reported nine fresh COVID-19 positive cases taking the state tally to 18.

Guwahati, May 28: Water level of river Brahmaputra in Guwahati increases. Assam flood situation still grim as water levels of many rivers have gradually increased and flowing above danger level marks at different places of the state.

Following incessant rains in Assam and neighbouring states Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, the water levels of many rivers are increasing.

In Guwahati, the water level of the Brahmaputra river is rising by 5-6 cm every hour.

Central Water Commission (CWC) employee Sadikul Hoque said that the water level of the Brahmaputra river is gradually increasing.

“The water level is increasing by 5-6 cm every hour. If the rain continues, then it will become worse. Now only one and a half feet have left to touch the danger level mark in Guwahati,” the Central Water Commission employee said.

Nearly 3 lakh people in 11 districts of the state are affected in the fresh floods.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person drowned in floodwaters at Rangia in Kamrup district yesterday.

321 villages in 21 revenue circles of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Hojai, Darrang, Barpeta, Nalbari, Goalpara, West Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district have been affected by floods.

Nearly 16,700 flood-affected people have taken shelter at 57 relief camps set up by the district administration and the floodwater submerged around 2700 hectares crop area.

Guwahati, May 28: Indian army and police recovers huge cache of arms and ammunition and explosives of Naga outfit group NSCN (IM) in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district.

Based on a specific intelligence input regarding the presence of armed NSCN (IM) militants in the Miao Bum Reserve Forest area in Changlang district, 9th Rajputana Rifles, and Arunachal Pradesh police had jointly launched an operation in the forest area on Wednesday.

Guwahati based Defence PRO Lt Col P Khongsai said that, during the search operation conducted in inclement weather and inhospitable terrain, the team successfully recovered a cache of weapons, ammunition, and other warlike stores.

The troops had recovered one AK-56 Rifle with three magazines and 115 live rounds of ammunition, one point 22 pistol with a magazine and three live rounds of ammunition, one Under Barrel Grenade Launcher, one hand grenade, one kilogram of explosives, 4 stick explosive powder gel, 250-gram explosive gun powder, cordex 1 meter, 1 detonator and other warlike stores from the jungle area.

Later, the recovered arms, ammunition, and explosives were handed over to Changlang police for further investigations.

The recovery of this cache has dealt a severe blow to the nefarious designs of the proscribed group operating in the region.

One died and over 2.71 lakh people of 11 districts affect in Assam flood:

Guwahati, May 27 : The flood situation in Assam on Tuesday turned worse as over 2.71 lakh people in 11 districts of the state have been affected in the first spate of flood, and one person died from drowning in floodwater.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person drowned in floodwaters at Rongia in Kamrup district.

A total of 2,71,655 people of 321 villages in 21 revenue circles of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Hojai, Darrang, Barpeta, Nalbari, Goalpara, West Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district have been affected by floods.

Nearly 16,700 flood affected people have taken shelter at 57 relief camps set up by the district administration.

Over 2.15 lakh people have been affected alone in Goalpara district followed by 22,332 people in Nalbari district.

The water levels of Brahmaputra river at Neamatighat in Jorhat district, Jia Bharali river in Sonitpur district and Puthimari river in Kamrup district are flowing above danger level mark.

A total of 2678 hectares crop area has been submerged by floodwaters and nearly 28,300 domestic animals and 9350 poultry affected.

On Tuesday, portions of eight embankments, several roads, bridges, culverts have been damaged by the floodwaters of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries in many places of the state.

Assam CM takes review of flood situation:

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday directed all district administration for ensuring all COVID-19 protocols like social distancing, hand washing, wearing of masks etc. at the flood relief camps so that community spread of COVID-19 cases can be contained during the flood season.

Reviewing the current flood situation in the state with the officials of Assam State Disaster Management Authority and top officials of various other departments at Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati, the Assam Chief Minister directed the Deputy Commissioners of all districts to keep soap and water for handwashing, masks for inmates while properly sanitizing the flood relief camps and to ensure that no irregularities take place while distributing relief materials.

He also issued directions for releasing of ex-gratia within 48 hours by district administration for those losing life in floods.

Sonowal instructed the DCs to regularly review the relief distribution system so that accountability can be fixed if any irregularity takes place.

He also stressed on the need to keep an information board in all relief camps showing details of how much relief materials have been received by every individual inmate.

The Assam Chief Minister directed the power department to cut off power in all those transformers submerged in floods so that no case of electrocution takes place during the floods.

On being apprised about the LEWS advanced lightning warning system of ASDMA which can give a warning of impending lightning before 45 minutes, Sonowal instructed the department to use the system to reduce number of casualties in the state because of lightning.

Directing the PWD to take steps for repairing 157 roads damaged by floods in 8 districts, the Assam Chief Minister instructed the water resources department to keep a stock of materials such as RCC Porcupine, bamboo, sandbags etc. in all districts for taking immediate measures to safeguard the areas affected by erosion.

He also asked the officials of water resources department to go to the public and make them aware about delay in construction of embankments due to lockdown and heavy rainfall in the month of May.

Sonowal directed the ASDMA officials to disseminate information through advertisements in various media about the do’s and don’ts during floods, lightning, storm etc.

During the meeting Sonowal was apprised that an amount of Rs 386 crore has been released by Central Government as the first installment this year to State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) and he emphasized proper utilization of the fund for providing succour to those affected by flood in the state.

He also directed the Inland Water department to take precautionary measures to avoid boat mishaps during the rainy season and strictly enforce wearing of masks by crews and the passengers of ferries and the boats.

The Assam Chief Minister instructed the veterinary department to provide cattle feed to the domestic animals in the flood affected areas and also provide food to the wild animals in Kaziranga National Park and other such flood affected wildlife sanctuaries.

Nagaland: Students returning home harassed at station in Bihar

 

May 27, 2020: Students returning home to Nagaland Dimapur on a special train from Gurugram were harassed in Bihar’s Danapur station on Sunday.

 

These students had been stranded in Haryana’s Gurugram due to the lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

 

In a sudden turn of events, at around 4 AM, as the train reached Danapur railway station in Bihar, a commotion came to the attention of the passengers of the train – a huge mob of people had started boarding the train.

 

As some of the students questioned them they were informed that neither these invaders have tickets to board the train nor did they have permission to do the same. However, they claimed that the station master of Danapur station had counseled them to board the train

 

Although after trying for some time the boys finally managed to force them out of the train and locked the doors and windows from inside, the mob now started hurling stones at the windows and abusing the passengers of the train.

 

Posting a video of the incident on Facebook a passenger of the same train wrote, “Northeast stranded returnees special train has been blocked at Bihar(Danapur station) and so police are involved with the public, they attack us with stone and not only that but one of the police broke down the window glass and two-person got injured and dhamki diya ki goli se uraa de ga.. Aur Bohot jyda torture Kiya so please share Karo Jitna  ho sakae.”

 

 

The train, later on, started moving once again and reached Dimapur with the North East passengers on board.

Assam reports 22 new COVID-19 positive cases, state tally rises to 704

Guwahati, May 27: Assam on Wednesday has reported 22 fresh positive cases for COVID-19, the state tally rises to 704.

Confirming the reports, Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, one person resident of Kamrup (Metro) district who traveled from Ahmedabad to Guwahati by flight has been tested positive for COVID-19.

“It is the first air carrier patient detected in Assam. Out of the 22 cases, 14 cases have been reported from Golaghat district, three from Nagaon, two from Karbi Anglong, one each from Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

He tweeted – “18 new cases of #COVID19+ incl first air carrier, a resident of Kamrup Metro, who traveled from Ahmedabad to Guwahati; 14 Golaghat, 2 Karbi Anglong, 1 Lakhimpur. Total cases 704.”

The state has registered 704 COVID-19 positive cases so far and 62 out of them were discharged from hospitals.

Assam has now 635 active positive cases for the new virus.

Massive blast at an oil field in Assam, Tinsukia district:

Guwahati, May 27: Amid nationwide Coronavirus lockdown, a massive blast occurred at an oil field in Assam, Tinsukia district on Wednesday.

The incident took place at Baghjan oil field.

According to the reports, the blast occurred due to some technical problems.

The blast occurred when the operational work at the oil field was going on.

Following the blast, more than 10 fire tenders from Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Duiajan, and the officials of district administration, police have rushed to the area and engaged to control the situation.

However, the district administration has evacuated at least 25 families and employees of the oil field from the area.

There is no report of any casualty in the incident so far.

Meanwhile, locals create chaos on oil emissions from the site.
