BSF Additional Director General visited the Indo-Bangladesh border and takes stock of COVID-19 preparedness:

Guwahati, May 21: BSF Additional Director General visited Indo-Bangladesh border along with Rajesh Kumar, Inspector General, Guwahati Frontier visited the Border area all along Indo-Bangladesh border under Frontier HQ Guwahati to review the current security situation and operational readiness.

He was briefed by Rajesh Kumar, Inspector General Guwahati Frontier on the operational preparedness and measures to combat the situation arising from Corona Pandemic.

He visited the “Isolation Facility” and quarantine centers at BSF location created for the suspected COVID-19 patients and BSF personnel who are returning from leave or any other duty.

He appreciated the efforts of ‘COVID warriors’. He interacted with troops and commended efforts for taking adequate safety measures against the COVID-19 Pandemic and also maintaining a high level of operational preparedness and also efforts in helping border population in their distress due to COVID – 19.

Pankaj Kumar Singh, ADG arrived at Frontier Headquarter Guwahati and the purpose was to take stock of the readiness amid COVID-19 and also the operational preparedness along the international border.

During his visit he was also briefed about border domination.

Pankaj Kumar Singh, ADG lauded the efforts made by the BSF Guwahati Frontier on the fight against the pandemic and operational domination along the border.

He also mentioned that BSF is doing a commendable job and effectively guarding the international border and also taking up several welfare measures for the overall improvement of the force.

Six more COVID-19 positive cases in Assam

Assam reports six more COVID-19 positive cases, state tally surges to 191:

Guwahati, May 21: Assam on Thursday has registered six more positive cases for COVID-19 taking the state tally to 191.

Among the new cases, two cases have been reported from Kokrajhar district and four cases from Barpeta district.

Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, six persons have tested positive for COVID-19, and out of the three persons are at Kokrajhar quarantine center.

He tweeted – “Two persons at Kokrajhar Quarantine Center tested & confirmed #COVID19 positive. Total cases 191.”

On Wednesday, 28 people were tested positive for the new virus.

According to the Assam government data, the state has registered 76 COVID-19 positive cases in the last 48 hours.

The state has so far reported 191 COVID-19 positive cases including 83 cases from Kamrup (Metro), 15 cases from Golaghat district, 14 cases from Cachar district, 10 cases from Kamrup, eight cases from Hojai district, seven cases from Jorhat district, six cases each from Morigaon, Goalpara, Nalbari districts, five cases each from Karimganj, Dhubri, Bongaigaon districts, four cases each from Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Barpeta districts, three cases from Sonitpur district, two cases from Biswanath districts and one each from South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Hailakandi, Sivasagar districts.

Out of them two patients died and 39 others were discharged from hospitals.

One COVID-19 patient was migrated to Bihar.

The state has now 136 active COVID-19 positive cases.

May 21, 2020: Cyclone Amphan devastates Bengal. Super cyclonic storm has devastated Bengal. Its landfall commenced around 2.30 PM on the Digha coast in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district. Crossing the Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha and Hatiya Islands (in Bangladesh) it went across the Sundarbans towards Kolkata.

 

Monitoring the situation from the Emergency Operation Centre at Nabanna which houses the State Secretariat, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Few areas have been affected particularly. All connections have been lost. It’ll take 3-4 days to get a view of the actual scenario…We never thought that such could’ve happened… The loss is too huge.”

Cyclone Amphan devastates Bengal

More than 5 lakh people had been evacuated from North and South 24 Parganas, Midnapore, parts of Bardhaman, and Kolkata to cyclone relief shelters.

However, North and South 24 Parganas districts have been destroyed, the Chief Minister said. Rivers, embankments, bridges, roads, buildings, fields, everything is destroyed. About 10-12 people have died from trees uprooting. Digha too has undergone heavy damages.

Electricity supplies got disconnected. Trees, electric poles uprooted and collapsed. Many kutcha houses have been completely demolished in several areas.

In Kolkata too, the effect of the devastating storm was such that it will continue to haunt the people for several years to come. With a wind speed of around 125 to 130 KMPH, the cyclone several trees got uprooted, electricity disconnected, all communications failed. Several parts of the city remained waterlogged.

However, rescue operations have started since the 20th night.

23-day-old baby and 10 others tested positive for COVID-19 in Manipur

Guwahati, May 20: Manipur on Wednesday has reported 11 people tested positive cases for COVID-19 including a 23-day-old baby.

With the new cases, the state tally has now increased to 20.

Confirming the report, Manipur Health department Additional Director and Spokesperson Dr. Khoirom Sasheekumar Mangang said that, out of the 11 new patients, six are males including a 23-day-old baby and five are females.

“They were tested at Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory  (VRDL), Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) and found positive for COVID-19. Nine of them were returned to the state from Chennai and two persons were returned from Delhi and Guwahati. The total number of positive cases in the state has increased to 20 and two patients were discharged from hospital,” the Manipur Health Department official said.

Out of the new cases, 10 patients are from Churachandpur district and one from the Imphal East district.

The state has now 18 active positive cases for COVID-19.

Cyclone Amphan completely entered land by 7 pm on Wednesday and reached West Bengal capital Kolkata and its adjoining districts accompanied by strong winds with an intensity of 110-120 kilometers per hour.

More than 5 lakh people have been evacuated from nearby coastal areas in the state and another 1,58,640 people have been removed to safer areas in neighbouring Odisha, with both states being hit by the cyclonic storm.

The severe cyclonic storm will reach Assam and Meghalaya on May 21 and it will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in these two northeastern districts.

Bengal gears up as Super Cyclone Amphan advances towards the Bengal coast:

Bengal gears up for Super Cyclone Amphan. With the raging cyclone advancing towards the Bengal coast with an intensity of about 165-175 KMPH, district administrations are taking all necessary actions to ensure minimum damage to life and property.

South 24 Parganas 

One of the five districts expected to be hit hard by super cyclone Amphan, district administration is taking all safety measures to combat yet another danger to human and animal lives and property.

Nearly 40 thousand Villagers have been shifted from all areas near rivers. The district administration is conducting meetings from time to time with all related departments to monitor the situation.

NDRF teams have been deployed.

The Sundarbans which is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger and a world heritage site lies in this district, while some part of it falls under the North 24 Parganas district. It is also the place that had undergone massive damage and destruction due to Cyclone Aila in 2009.

With the advancing super cyclone Amphan, thousands of people have been evacuated to relief centers by NDRF and the Sundarban Safari resort team.

A large number of people live in kaccha houses beside rivers. During high tides the water level tends to rise to 6 to 7 ft above the ground level posing their lives in danger.

The district administration is also conducting continuous miking to alert the people of the upcoming danger.

The  Regional Weather Forecasting Centre tweeted “Cyclone Amphan approaches India’s east coast to hit Odisha & W.Bengal over Sunderbans, worst cyclone in last 20 yrs.”

North 24 Parganas

People living in the Sundarban area in Basirhat are panic-stricken as the cyclone advances. Fishing activities have been stopped and fishermen asked to return from rivers and seashores to the safety of the land.

The North 24 Parganas district administration and Basirhat Sub-divisional administration are all geared up with necessary precautionary measures as required to deal with the situation as the cyclone nears.

NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in the Sub-Division. Food and relief materials including PPEs, and other safety equipment are stocked in adequate quantities for Coronavirus pandemic.

57 flood shelters, 63 multipurpose cyclone shelters, and more than 500 government buildings such as schools and other centers have been identified to be used for the purpose. Around 20,000 people have already been shifted to these cyclone shelters, with the evacuation process still going on.

The relief shelters have been cleaned, and equipped with proper electricity supply, water supply, generator backup, and food arrangements.

Control rooms have been constituted in every block to constantly monitor the cyclone situation and to alert and help people stay safe and alert.

Police apprehend three COVID-19 patients who escaped from Guwahati quarantine center

Guwahati, May 20: Assam police finally apprehend three COVID-19 patients who had escaped from a quarantine center in Guwahati.

According to the reports, three COVID-19 patients who were at the Sarusajai stadium quarantine center in Guwahati had escaped from the center on Tuesday night.

Out of the three fled patients two were from Nalbari district and one from Hojai district.

Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, the fled patients were identified as Hamidul Ahmed, Shajahal Ali of Nalbari, and Saidul Alam of Hojai.

Later, Assam police had managed to apprehend the fled COVID-19 patients and made necessary arrangements.

Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted – “3 #Covid19 patients Hamidul Ahmed & Shajahal Ali of Nalbari; Md Saidul Alam of Hojai escaped from Sarusajai quar center causing us immense stress. Thanks to @nalbari_police & @Hojai_Police for apprehending them in time. Such acts shall attract punitive measures. @assampolice.”

Assam has reported 157 positive cases for COVID-19 so far.

Guwahati, May 20: Assam COVID warrior nurse renders service till her wedding day. A nurse of Assam’s Nalbari district has earned praise from many people for her dedicated works to fight against the deadly novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

23-year-old Oli Barman – a GNM nurse of Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital in Nalbari district who treating COVID-19 patients, has attended her duties till the day of her wedding.

Even she also offered to join her duty after her big day rituals are over.

Oli Barman’s wedding ceremony was held at her Singimari village house on May 18.

Oli Barman and her family members had planned a month before that they will hold the marriage ceremony during the lockdown period by following the government orders.

After months of preparations and loads of shopping, the COVID-19 outbreak had changed all plans of Oli Barman and her family.

But she was continuing both – her duty along with her wedding preparations.

She attended her duties at the government-run hospital as a COVID warrior till the big day of her wedding.

Joining as a nurse in the hospital in 2018, Oli Barman has continued her duty in the emergency section of the hospital in the last two months.

Oli Barman said that, she is a COVID warrior as well as a girl.

“At this crisis hours, I am dedicating myself to fight against COVID-19. At the same time, I want to marry someone. I have attended my duty till today. I also offer to join my duty at night after my wedding rituals get over,” Oli Barman said.

She went home for the ‘Joran’ – a traditional ritual of Assamese marriage, after attending her duty at the hospital.

Oli Barman said that only a few relatives and close friends were invited to attend her marriage function.

Many people have praised the nurse for her dedicated works to fight against COVID-19.

Cyclone AMPHAN intensifies towards Bengal coast

West Bengal: Cyclone AMPHAN intensifies advancing towards Bengal coast

Super Cyclone Amphan (pronounced as UM-PUN) intensifies as it is advancing towards the Digha coast in West Bengal coast and Paradeep in Odisha. Blowing over the Bay of Bengal and gaining moisture and strength, its landfall is expected to commence any time from the afternoon on 20th May.

 

Described as an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm blowing over northwest Bay of Bengal, Cyclone Amphan is currently 150 km away from the Digha coast. Advancing at an intensity of 165-175 KMPH, its wind speed is expected to be around 18 KMPH in Digha, 22 KMPH in Bengal’s capital city Kolkata.

Cyclone AMPHAN intensifies towards Bengal coast

 

The India Meteorological Department in its hourly update has tweeted “SUCS AMPHAN about 120 km east of Paradip (Odisha) at 1030 IST of 20th May. To cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sunderbans. Landfall process to commence from afternoon.”

 

5 districts of Bengal namely, South and North 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore along with Kolkata are on high alert in Bengal.

 

NDRF, SDRF, Civil Defense forces have been deployed at various places. And all fishing activities have been put to halt. Lakhs of people have been evacuated from all low lying and riverside areas of these four districts to cyclone relief shelters. Control rooms are monitoring the entire situation 24/7.

 

Adequate measures are also being taken to maintain social distancing and health hygiene in the relief shelters. PPEs, masks, gloves, and other equipment are being provided not only to the people but also to the rescue forces. Adequate food items have been stockpiled. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee along with other officials is closely monitoring the situation.

 

Time to time meetings of all District Magistrates, BDOs and other officials and ministers are being conducted regarding the same.

Meghalaya, May 19, 2020: Meghalaya becomes 5th Northeast Covid-19 free state

 

Meghalaya became the 5th Northeast state to become free of Coronavirus on Monday after its only COVID-19 positive patient recovered from the lethal disease.

 

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed that on retesting the patient for the second time, she was found to be negative once again. Hence, she can now be declared to have recovered from the disease. In a tweet he wrote, “Second Retest of the lone active case (positive patient) was done again, and the test has come out negative. The patient can be declared as recovered.”

The patient had previously been tested on 17th May. Her results came negative. Following the protocols she was tested once again 24 hours later on Monday and once again the reports were found to be negative, thus making the state 5th among the North-Eastern states to become completely free of coronavirus.

Meghalaya has reported 13 cases for COVID-19 so far and out of the cases, eight people are the family members of the deceased doctor and three are helpers and one is family friends. But later all the patients had been tested negative.

Among the other four states, Sikkim and Nagaland had not reported a single positive case, while Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have reported no new active cases. The two patients from each of the two states have recovered and are discharged making the count zero.
